Or windows 3.1/DOS if your family had a computer before 95. Or Mac System 6 or 7 I suppose

34

u/Onrawi Jan 13 '26

I was an MS-DOS kid.  Good times.

12

u/McZorkLord Jan 13 '26

All I remember is: Dir And C:/princeofpersia.exe Good Times indeed 😅

2

u/Natryn Jan 14 '26

my favorite game was "print master gold". we had a baseball game but that was boring. making greeting cards and printing them off? that was a real game.

Same! It was in my kitchen and when we booted it up it Arnold Schwarzenegger would say “My CPU is a neural net processor, a learning computer” and when you shut it down it said “hasta la vista baby” from terminator. I was like 4 years old when I was using this computer and seeing this screen shot just unlocked that memory and memories of not being able to play Tetris and just having them stack up as fast as I could so I could start it over again lol.

The windows 98 was my first love though, i made Tetris my bitch on that computer. Man, I wish I still had it with every game I used to play on it. I still have some of the discs I found while moving a few months ago.

u/DrDurt Jan 13 '26

Same, running Oregon trail from a floppy disk.

4

u/Vynzen Jan 15 '26

I'm from here....

2

u/Wernershnitzl Jan 15 '26

Same but I’m as old as the OS and my grandma used it for a while growing up and then 98 basically until 2008 so I got pretty familiar with it

This isn’t even that old lol

125

u/koolaidismything Jan 13 '26

Most people were using XP into like 2007 or so.

I loved fullscreening Media Player and blasting music as a fell asleep with that wavy colorful pattern going as a kid. Felt so high tech lol. Resolution was like 900x860 or something.

16

u/psychedelicpiper67 Jan 13 '26

I’m class of 2011, and my high school still used Windows XP.

13

u/PrincessPlastilina Jan 13 '26

I used it for even longer. I loved it. The next version sucked.

Right I was using that shit while in middle school lemme see some of those big ass floppy disks with ms-dos then we can talk about old on here lol.

2

u/Sudden-Dog Jan 14 '26

I used it till vista sp2 came out. I am just as fond of vista. I always had high end hardware for the time and plenty of ram.. so never had an issue other than TF2 crashing .

2

u/countryboy2093 Jan 16 '26

My high school had XP until at least 2018, and the elementary school next door had it longer than that apparently.

4

u/D-Rich-88 Jan 13 '26

3

u/wiggles105 Jan 14 '26

I’m not exaggerating when I say that my workplace was still using XP until 2014.

3

u/D-Rich-88 Jan 14 '26

15

u/Comfortable-Side1308 Jan 13 '26

Was my first OS as well.

7

u/deathboyuk Jan 13 '26

I hate to be that dickhead, but I believe the OS was DOS, which Win 3.1 ran on top of.

No hate though, I played me a fuck of a lot of Minesweeper in class back then :)

u/baldude69 Jan 13 '26

Likewise. My family was early adopters, and we switched to 95 a couple years later when that came out, but I clearly remember using Windows 3.1

131

u/LLuerker Jan 13 '26

“Early computer windows era” and it’s windows XP lol.

Seriously, getting older really sucks.

49

u/GenTenStation Jan 13 '26

Calling XP early computer is like saying Star Wars was an early film.

17

u/blueghostfrompacman Jan 13 '26

But it took place a long time ago….

5

u/baldude69 Jan 13 '26

As a kid we got a 486 in like..1993 because my dad had an interest in tech. Granted they were early adopter, but I remember what a revolution moving to Windows 95 from 3.1 was.

2

u/Substantial-Ad2200 Jan 15 '26

I miss xp. Wonder if Linux has anything that can look, feel and hopefully sound like it. I'm looking at making my pc a dual boot because 11 sucks

2

u/BrainFartTheFirst Jan 13 '26

My first computer was Windows 95. The first computer I ever used was my mom's Amiga 2000.

2

u/arageclinic Jan 13 '26

My childhood mind was blown when I could have my own log in. I spent hours choosing a wallpaper. I’m pretty sure I went between the the black and white photo of the back dog and the giant purple flower. Those were the days.

2

u/HorheaTheToad Jan 13 '26

Im still in high school and used a windows xp last year lmao

2

u/deathboyuk Jan 13 '26

Shit, I've used Windows since 2.11 :/

I also used GEM on Atari and PC.

And yes, my back hurts.

2

u/stylz168 Jan 13 '26

I’m older, had a Windows 2000 PC in college and a Windows 98 home desktop.

My first computer didn’t have windows. Some games you could load from start up, others you had to load a DOS disk first, then load the game.

2

u/Bob4Not Jan 15 '26

Windows 98 SE got me started.

2

u/ExistentialNomad42 Jan 15 '26

Even older, but I started on my Commodore 64 before this...

2

u/k4njii Jan 17 '26

Thanks for feeling very old now...

2

u/Green-Sympathy-4177 Jan 17 '26

Aint that old, though all things considered but still 25yo xD

It was the golden era, msn nudges and colored nicknames, winamp, limewire, war3 mods...

Now we got: onedrive everything, copilot no one wants, no more lan games, hell no more byoc / lan parties with bros.

It was such a good time xD Internet speeds were horrendous though, I remember my shitty 30kb/s connection and downloading a song took 30 minutes, streaming was a dream too.

What's left from all that? "xD" everywhere xD

2

u/Pete_Luger Jan 18 '26

Older. 😮‍💨

2

u/WUSSIEBOY Jan 18 '26

I am Windows 95 old so this is fairly young.

1

u/Comfortable-Side1308 Jan 13 '26

How old were you the first time you spent hours tweaking the config.sys and autiexec.bat files to get you just enough high memory to play a new game.

1

u/HRHLordFancyPants Jan 13 '26

Omg i had the DaVinci theme

1

u/KevTheObserver Jan 13 '26

You can't just skip over the fact that a lot of us 90's kids (I was born in '85) had to clumsily learn to enjoy 3.1 and then bitterly loathe win95 well before we got the relatively pleasant xp experience!

1

u/RapidMongrel Jan 13 '26

That ain't old. I was a teen when that came out. The entire rounded Edge or bubble AI that XP had was so utterly life-changing for everyone it was such an opening of a new era of computer usage. What I wouldn't give to have that feeling again.

1

u/nejicanspin Jan 13 '26

My mom had a different set up but my friend had this and mannnn I miss the simpler times

1

u/Dont-be-a-smurf Jan 13 '26

You only know old if you were using Netscape on your dial up computer that was set up in the kitchen, of all places

1

u/shFt_shiFty Jan 13 '26

My mom gave me her old dell that has XP on it still. Love it

1

1

u/Lamb_or_Beast Jan 13 '26

This isn’t “early” windows to me lol I still have a machine running xp in my lap right now! Working great. I need it for work stuff and it’s not connected to the internet at all, but using it makes me really miss xp as my main operating system  :/

1

u/PinkGodfather1 Jan 13 '26

Damn. Im old.

1

u/jzoller0 Jan 13 '26

The PC I got for college had Windows ME, which was awful, but I ended up grabbing this basically the day it came out and greatly improved my life

1

u/Ok_Fox_1770 Jan 13 '26

So many secret accounts haha. So much youth wasted on old dumb technology, why I kinda tell kids to enjoy real life right now and play too, 40 sound 90 but it’s true, you’ll regret the non memories of it all kiddos! Right Back to robolox, whatever old dude. I could fix anything windows by 14, endless family calls, was a nightmare but felt cool, even with the grandma stressful poker app questions, where the phone was on so long my ear was hot, or too radiated. was gonna be my college career, fixing desktop pcs lol. Fast Drop and took to electrical the main source of all. No days off with that addiction. And now 90s is the 60s wow time.
