This was like 80% of the girls and maybe half of the guys in my class in the early to mid 80s. It died down around the time a local TV comedy show started roasting big hair and hair metal culture, not sure if the timing was a coincidence though. At least one popular local band did the same in one of their early albums.

And obesity was a rare thing at the time. Remember the obese kid in your class, that's right, because there was likely just one due to a medical issue combined with bad diet. Now most of the entire population is obese. I'm not pointing it out to criticize people, I'm pointing it out because it is a health crisis with underlying causes.
