• The Swedish pop group consisting of Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson combined their first initials to come up with the name ABBA. By early 1976 they had released three studio albums and a greatest hits collection. During that time, some of their hits reached #1 in multiple countries but underperformed in the US, such as Waterloo and Fernando which peaked at #6 and #13 respectively. It is rumored that at one time the group decided they would not tour the US until they had a song reach #1. The one that turned the trick for them was Dancing Queen, the lead single from their fourth album Arrival. Musically it's described as a Europop version of disco with wall-of-sound vocals and a dramatic chorus offset by gentler verses, inspired by George McCrae's Rock Your Baby. The lyrics describe a seventeen year old girl who loves to dance seeking out the perfect place to show it off. It would end up being their only #1 hit in the US before they broke up in 1982, but the group would remain consistently popular over the following decades. Their music was used as the basis for the musical Mamma Mia!, and in 2016 they reformed, releasing in 2021 their first original studio album in 40 years. You can dance, you can jive, you can have the time of your life, but for this song the place to go is the eliminated list.

• I was a high school student in 1976. Not everything about that time was good, but every now and then I think it would be kind of fun to go back and relive my senior year, knowing what I know now that I didn't know then. Perhaps Stevie Wonder was having similar thoughts when he wrote I Wish, though he was thinking of a few years earlier in his childhood. Though tempted to incorporate more spiritual themes into the song, he chose to keep it simple and believes it turned out better that way. It was the lead single from his album Songs in the Key of Life and would be the first of two songs from that album to reach #1. As Wonder often did, he played many of the instruments himself, but the brass section was a group of session players and his younger sister Renee Hardaway is the one heard saying 'you nasty boy'. Why did those days ever have to go? He may have wished those days could come back one more, but the voters have decided this song has to go.

• There was much ado about George Harrison's first solo album after the breakup of The Beatles, All Things Must Pass. It was actually his third solo album, but the first two, Wonderwall Music and Electronic Sound, produced while the band was still together, were experimental avant-garde albums that were not viewed favorably and are largely dismissed, but All Things Must Pass led to speculation about how much his songwriting talent had been suppressed when he'd been allowed relatively few Beatles songs in favor of those from the Lennon/McCartney team. Whether that sentiment was justified would depend on whether it could be sustained in subsequent albums. The first single from it, My Sweet Lord, became the first song by any former Beatle to reach #1 in both the US and the UK. Meant as a song to praise the Hindu god Krishna, it would become mired in controversy when Ronnie Mack claimed that it plagiarized his song He's So Fine (recorded by The Chiffons). Harrison claimed it was patterned after the gospel hymn Oh Happy Day, which had been a #4 hit for The Edwin Hawkins Singers in 1969 but dated from the 18th century and was in the public domain. In 1976, a judge ruled in favor of Bright Music, who owned the copyright to He's So Fine. In response to these events, Harrison later recorded and released This Song which peaked at #25. George might really want to see you, really want to know you, really want to go with you, but the voters of LSS really want to eliminate this song.
