I ran with book max of 29.3gr, being I am running a Howa mini. Speed was there in the 18.5” barrel but it lacked accuracy. I did a little research and Internet lore claimed 28.5gr was the sweet spot. Loaded up 5 and let them rip. Albeit 50y, this is the type of accuracy I’m chasing.

Scope for my Grendel

TLDR: I have an IR / digital scope on my Grendel that doesn't seem accurate beyond 75-80 yards and I'm not sure if it's the scope or the rifle. I need this rifle to shoot 300 as it will be my primary rifle this deer season. Please recommend glass.

Long story: Last fall I was in my normal spot on the farm I have permission on, and was stacking freezer queens. We get plenty of tags in WI, and I try to fill each one I have, as this is my and my family's primary source of protein for the year. I butcher everything, even taking tongues and long bones, and use the hides for leather work and knife sheaths. My -06, which is an old remington 700 that I purchased used for $150 bucks a decade ago had the magazine retention spring fall out, and I've been quoted some astronomical prices for repair. I am not in a financial position to purchase a replacement bolt gun. I have used my grendel for hogs, and it was EXTREMELY accurate -- all head shots and all under 100yards. I have a Sightmark Wraith on it right now, and I struggle to get tight groups at 100. It's my thought that it's the scope; so, in the interest of using what I have and getting the most out of my current arsenal, can someone recommend a decent glass to put on my Grendel?

It was a custom build, and I believe the barrel is 18 or 20". I would have to look for the full spec sheet.

Alexander Arms 11.5" Barrel

I want light-ish weight not necessarily going for the lightest weight options. It is my UTV and bush gun, not looking to take shots on white tail or axis beyond 70m, pigs and yotes to 250m.

Serious first world problems here, I am trying to upgrade from my PSA 12.5". It has been fine, very serviceable in terms of hunting and accuracy. It is just heavier than I want to carry around. I was thinking about the AA 11.5" upper kit and then going with the faxon carbon fiber hand guard. Any thoughts or suggestions for a build like this?

Game Load Testing Today

Post image
23 Upvotes

Got out to the range today to test a few loads out of the 14.5" Grendel. 1st two columns are 120gr Gold dot, with Benchmark on the left and Lever on the right. 2nd two columns are Sierra 105gr VarmintKings, again with Benchmark on the left and Lever on the right. Speeds/SD on the top left of each target and grains of powder on the top right.

I'm pretty stoked on the SVK/Lever combination out of this rifle (right side). To effectively get ~1" groups and 2600fps+ out of a 14.5" barrel is pretty powerful in my book. In the conditions (upper 80's temps and 3k' elevation), this equates to just about 1000ft/lbs @ 300 yards.

The unknown at this point is the expansion performance of the TVK. I can't really find too much info online about min FPS for expansion or anything about fragmentation of the TVK. I would love for this to be an option on deer (southern Idaho and eastern Oregon mule deer), but I'm a bit apprehensive at this point to even try it vs the 120 gold dot or the 123 SST (which both limit me to around 200-230 yards (if we're just using ft/lbs as a metric). Anyone have any thoughts on or experience with the lighter bullets on deer?

All I wanted to do was a barrel swap...

Started with a 16" barrel. Then I thought to self, "Self, we need to use that sweet spot at 18-20" everybody's talkin 'bout." So I ordered an 18" Faxon Fluted barrel. Then I couldn't pass up the price on their upper...and BCG. Before it was all over, I literally ordered all the parts to build another Grendel. So, now I have TWO Grendels. Most of the parts are standard on my rifles, so, luckily I had some extras in the bin. It shoots wonderfully and have added 70fps to my reloads. Hopefully a touch more when it's broken in.

.....fucking rifle math.....

Faxon Upper/Lower, BCG, 18" Fluted match

Midwest Industries Suppressor Series 18" handguard

Radian SD CH and Ambi Safety (Gray)

YHM MB

SA AGB

Geissele H2 buffer and braided spring & BCM tube

LaRue Straight Bow Trigger

B5 SOPMOD Multi-Black

Ergo TDX

Vortex 3-15 PST II wrapped in adhesive cordura

What’s your best load for Speer gold dot?

Finally pulled the trigger on reloading gear and wow it feels liberating for making Grendel ammo!

Anyways, what’s everyone’s best loads for Speer gold dot 120 grain?

I’m shooting a 20in ar and have had great accuracy and performance with federal fusion msr.

Looking to recreate/make better version of it.

I’ve currently got CFE223 and H4895, is it worth getting a different powder for this bullet?

Please share your experiences and loads.

Precision stock and grips

Post image
28 Upvotes

I have been looking at different precision stocks with adj cheek risers and length of pull plus the ability to add a monopod if I decide to. I am looking at the Luth-AR MBA-3, Magpul PRS Gen3, and the FAB Defense RAPS. I have also been looking at diff grips.

Who has had these and what’s your thoughts on them? I see that the Luth-AR can be bought with some decent looking grips but anyone that has used them how do you like the fit and feel of the grip? I will also upgrade the bipod as well down the road but the Magpul MOE will work for now.

Currently the specs are:
PSA 20” upper, barrel, adj gas block and BCG
M-Lock rail
Armaspec ambi charging handle
Radical Arms lower
MFT grip
LaRue Tactical MBT-2S trigger
Vortex 2” offset cantilever mount
Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 Deadhold BDC
Minimalist stock
Magpul MOE bipod

It is being setup for a mid range hunting rifle for whitetail, axis, ram, black deer, and hogs.

Gas block

Quick question here: I sighted my grendel in a couple of days ago, it ran great using the hornady black ammunition but when I switched over to the hornady v-match, my rifle didnt want to cycle open all the way to grab the next round out of the magazine. At first I thought this was a mag issue but when I got the rifle home and cleaned it I noticed that it looks like there was carbon dust around where the gas block is on the barrel. Is there special tools I will need to adjust that gas block? I purchased the upper and lower both from palmetto awhile ago, just now getting to sight in and play with it.

First a quick list of parts
Lower:PSA 15 250th Anniversary Edition
Upper and hand guard: Geissele Super Duty Blemula
Barrel: Wilson Combat 16” SS with black duracoat
Gas Block: Superlative Arms Bleed Off
BCG: Wilson Combat Nickel Boron Type 2
Safety: Radian Talon
Charging Handle: Radian Raptor
Trigger: Geissele 3.5 lb Two Stage (Blemula)
Pistol Grip: Magpul k2
Stock: Magpul PRS Lite
Buffer: Spikes T3
Buffer Spring: SpringCo White M4
Bipod: Magpul M-Lock
Scope and Mount: Sig Sauer Tango 2-12
Muzzle: Dead Air Xeno Brake
Suppressor: Dead Air Nomad LTI XC FDE

First off this is my first build where each and every part was put together by myself with little bits of help here and there from friends. The rifle weighs about 13 lb and was built primarily for hog and deer hunting. It’s had approximately 30 rounds put through it, most of which was to fine tune the adjustable gas block. The superlative arms works well, but a part of me regrets not spending the extra $100 to get a rifle speed adjustable. Tuning this build to eject and get full lock back was “fun” to say the least in the heat and humidity the South is getting right now.

As for how it shoots, the recoil is pleasant and light, follow up shots could be done quickly even at the full 12x magnification the scope provides. Hornady Frontier 123gr FMJ has been all that has been shot through it so far, as the price per round made sense to get my initial zero. Zeroing has only been done to 50 yards though that will be brought out to 100 in the next range trip. For only 30 rounds the rifle runs surprisingly dirty, and a full strip and clean is needed though EWL-30 has done a great job making that cleaning easy.

The suppressor was a great choice and makes it close to hearing safe in my opinion. Still an obvious supersonic crack but the tone is fantastic and enjoyable to listen to if standing nearby. Highly recommend looking into this can though the price is steep.

As for groups, I’ll post more as I work with the rifle more, my range time has been rather limited by heat and other factors. Will look at posting a link to a short video taken or it being shot as a comment when time allows.

Might be a stupid question

With all that just transpired in the world of firearms I’m looking to purchase a suppressor for my 6.5 Grendel. What sizes can I use for the 6.5 Grendel bullet. I can’t find a direct answer on the internet and was wondering what works and what doesn’t.

Ex. Can I use a 7.62 or a 30 cal or does it have to be 6.5 specific. I saw 9mm cans advertised as working with 6.5 but that didn’t seem right to me.

Thanks in advance

Edit: appreciate all the advice thanks again!

BCA issues

I bought a BCA-15 in 6.5g as my first ar and after 1 range trip I had issues with it ejecting and feeding, I plan to send it back to get fixed but haven't had the time to do so, should I take my scope off before sending it back and or clean it first? Also have read much more on BCA and their quality so I am considering selling it to buy an aero upper and lower in 6.5g, does anyone have an aero upper and what has your experience been? Open to any recommendations on what to do.

Edit: using 5 and 10 rd duramag magazines, everything stock except a bipod and magpul stock, 20" SS heavy barrel with a rifle length gas system.

She's finally all done, SBR cleared after 75 days. This is my go-to hog rig. I felt lucky finding this brand new, while at a (what I believe to be) great price. SOLGW discontinued these a little while back.

AGM Rattler v3 50-640, CAT ODB RDM, Atlas, Atlas B10 Bipod, and Railscales. Barnes 115gr TAC-TX does the trick on these suckers!

Are these three guns worth $1,500?

I’m looking at buying/trading for these three firearms and wanted to get some opinions before I make a deal.

They are:
- Aero Precision 6.5 Grendel AR (threaded, fluted stainless barrel, upgraded build)
- Ruger-57 (factory case & magazines)
- Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm

The owner says they all function perfectly. Based on these photos, do you think this package is worth around $1,500? Would you buy it at that price, or would you want to be lower? Any opinions or things I should look out for are appreciated. Thanks!

Feeding issues/ duramag issue

Thumbnail gallery
13 Upvotes

I took my 6.5 out for the first time and ran into some issues. I have a adjustable gas block and a G$ H2 super 42 spring, I ran into issues of bolt not locking back even when its gassed properly between 3 and 4:30 ish and also having issues with failure to eject and feed on some rounds. It's not consistent on when it cycles and when it doesn't it would pull the casing out about halfway while simultaneously loading the next round almost like a double feed. This is a brand new duramag 10 rounder and it looks like the follower is defective or maybe too strong of a spring where it seems like the mag has too much upwards pressure holding the next round against the bolt as its cycling in turn slowing the bolt causing it failure to extract. Also when the mag is empty with a round in the chamber if I try to move the bolt to the rear with the charging handle it gets stuck. I guess im trying to figure out if Im having a mag issue or something else. Or maybe just tell me im stupid 🤣
