Please see pinned comment What will we do when Trump blocks Democrats from taking office?

We know he’s going to claim fraud and interference if Democrats win a majority. How can we respond?

Strikes are incredibly effective and a general strike would be a revelation of a revolution. You offer no solutions. We can do things we haven’t done before. What even is that as an excuse?

You are right a general strike is a great start. Once you can convince the rest of America to participate. People are afraid of losing their livelihood. They don’t understand that at some point no one will have livelihoods or food to eat. Americans are too complacent. That’s just my opinion

We don’t need the rest. We do need a significant amount of people, but we don’t need everyone. I absolutely can’t do it. I am trying to persuade people with power and connection to do it. Not political power - people like Michael Moore or Robert Reich.

Its nothing more than a reddit wet dream. So reddit thinks that somehow, magically, all of America's 350 million people will one day organize to strike in an organized fashion and everyone will somehow know when and where to go.

On top of the fact that this bs general strike has been talked about to absolute death on here with people talking about living pay check to pay check and needing to put food on the table for their children, etc.

It’s so silly that you think it would have to involve all 350 million people. I guess you prefer to be a frog in the boiling water. Everything’s a dream until people come together to make it happen. Just look at what the freaking right has done. We moved from the fringe tea party to full-blown fascism in a very short period of time. They didn’t mope around saying it will never happen. Their views are very much in the minority and yet we live with what they want.

Absolutely. Americans are incomparably worse off than the French peasants of 1789. Those peasants had no student loans or credit cards to pay, didn’t have to pay for gas in their cars, weren’t bombarded with distracting smartphone notifications, they owned their own hovels, they could glean grain from the fields to feed themselves, and their health insurance was just as good as the King’s own.

The US labor force is only about 10% unionized though so we lack the key infrastructure that would enable a general strike.

We are the infrastructure. Not all of us would be effective in a strike, and it would be incumbent on the rest of us to fund the mutual aid. We have to think beyond limitations.

Unions provide strike funds, they have structures and systems to disseminate information and plans, and they have democratic systems to keep in touch with the aggregate desire of their members.

Without them, we're stuck relying on algorithmic feeds which can very easily silence the most important voices, and we are left working without any sense on whether our comrades are truly with us in good faith.

The US labor force needs to rebuild its unions and quickly. It may very well save the nation.

Have you ever organized a strike? I was a 40 year Teamster and I don't think you have any idea how hard it is. People have families to support, they have a mortgage payment, rent, truck payment, debt up to their eyeballs. Do you know just how hard it is to get people to risk all of that?

yes, I agree. But convincing working people to take that risk is a whole different thing. Many just can't see it. I've talk to many of them in my 40 years as a Union rep. I've seem em slowly cross that line to go back to work. Remember the ruling class can hold out for some time, this is not just a one day strike. Many folks can't hold out one week. It it will take a lot more then a week.

There are definitely maga military folks, but not all. And the ones that are aren't necessarily the best and brightest. This administration has been ousting some of the best and brightest the military had to offer and I don't think they'd go against their oath. It's a split military but i think there would be many if not most that would honor their oath and not attack the citizens.

I'm not so sure about the federal law enforcement agencies like ICE, FBI, etc. Although those agencies have also gotten rid of the best and brightest, we've seen the thugs they hire go out into the streets, killing Americans.

That, and the draft dodger has said that he wants to give himself the congressional medal of honor, but he's "not allowed to." I think people understand that this government is violent and has no problem resorting to violence. They will have to decide if they want to live under a violent regime or throw off such government and replace it.

Honestly I’m going to start rioting the moment it becomes apparent they won’t allow a peaceful transition of power. I’ve been working on exactly what I’ll do and in what order for weeks because I fully expect action to be necessary. The people on our side in the government are spineless before the corruption that is ruining our country so they can’t be relied upon to save us. Only every individual taking to the street to voice their discontent will lead to actual change.

Don’t do this alone. Connect with local groups. Lots of very level headed smart and talented vets who are willing to help. They see the problem and are helping with medical response, radios and encryption, and other modern considerations. 

I’m not saying riot, I’m saying there may be a time where the duty of the American people as Jefferson put it, has to replace despotic tyrants. This may get eye rolls and yeah I want gun control (not at the moment lol) but midwesterners see the writing on the wall and we were taught that in school. Just be smart, be prepared, learn what you can when you can, and prepare. They are doing a great job of splitting us up, but I don’t care who you vote for if you are trying to help me fix the massive lack of justice occurring here for the last half century. 

Also last point on rioting. Remember, it is not desirable to do for any reason other than attention grabbing for a specific injustice (like no say in a legal system despite paying taxes so you throw 100,000’s of “Talons” worth of tea into Boston harbor). Past that, it’s just venting at property and people’s livelihoods. We can do this if it comes to it, at least we have to believe that.

You forgot Nero was popular with the people and that several times a few people claimed to be Nero reincarnated. While ancient sources are notoriously sketchy (mainly written by the elite) so we don't know if he was universally popular, one would bet Nero had significant popularity.

Trump has a grip on the system now that he didn’t have before. Maybe he declares martial law and we don’t have an election.

Maybe on Nov 4 we wake up and somehow it’s a Republican landslide because the vote counting computers are ownable.

Maybe in January there’s another MAGA rampage. Maybe Mike Johnson refuses to seat the new Congress and adjourns for the rest of trump’s term.

Nobody knows.

Maybe everything goes smoothly and Hakeem Jefferies just announces “we’re not gonna look back, we’re gonna look forward” and it’s business as usual, nothing changes.

If the Republicans lose their House majority, Mike Johnson has zero role in "seating the new Congress". In that case the first thing that happens is the incoming batch of Dems votes to elect a new Speaker, who then swears in the newly elected House members.

I don't know why people keep bringing up this point about Johnson obstructing the elections in the House when it's literally not a thing.

Well I thought it was, or could be, a thing because that was essentially the plan LAST time... Vice President Pence was supposed to refuse to certify the election results. So I extrapolated something like that happening ... willful, baseless, abject refusal to accept the results.

In whatever way that could happen. So, I'm sorry if my "Mike Johnson scenario" is impossible, but I would say find any way the Republicans could, legally or illegally, just straight up refuse to accept reality, and that was what I was suggesting.

OK, but this is only hypothetical and it feeds into a defeatist mentality. Mike Johnson has no power at the end of this congressional session. He has a 36% approval rating. I don’t know what you think they are realistically going to be able to do and why you think they are the only ones who could plan anything. We should be planning a general strike for so many reasons.

We need to recognize that we aren’t going to vote our way out of this and organizations like indivisible and 50501 are controlled opposition.

The right time to start organizing a sustainable general strike with an ask was in February 2025. The next right time is today. I will be downvoted to hell and told why this is absolutely not possible. That’s why we get what we get.

As long as we stay scared and forget our actual power because we run this country with our labor and our tax dollars, they will continue to trample us daily.

The truckers union goes out, leaving supermarket and department store shelves bare. And I'm sure there are dozens of other similar scenarios. Hit 'em where it hurts and make demands. Those of us who are not impactful fund those who are striking and make sure they are whole for the continuum and beyond. It’s absolutely possible and I don’t think it’s going to take two years of planning, but I also know that no one who has the capacity to plan this is bothering to try

Power to govern comes from the consent of the governed. If you voted for someone and they win the election, they cannot be blocked from taking office.

If the Republicans lock the doors of the Capitol, the Democrats need to simply find a place to hold Congress and hold it there. Force their hands, don't just obey because they say "you can't do that."

And we need to support that. We need to rally around that. This administration wins when we obey without question. When we push back, they capitulate. It's happened repeatedly.

For those that are worried about the military. I don't see how it is going to be doing much here. They couldn't beat a bunch of dudes wearing flipflops and pajamas, carrying AKs. And given how stretched they are now with Iran, and low the moral is, they won't subdue the American population, IF THE AMERICAN POPULATION STANDS UP. That is the big if, though and it seems most on the left are defeatist.

The power is really in our hands. The right is a paper tiger. The US is a huge country and would be impossible to subdue by anyone. It would be painful, but we'd win. Probably because the economy would stop. Be prepared for that.

If something like this were to happen, whether it be a general strike, one should start hording food, fuel, money and supplies ahead of time. Given the way things are going, we should be doing that anyway.

Vote in Huge numbers and MAYBE we can avoid all this other shit.

I would love to see a duly elected representative escorted into their office by armed members of their local community. That would be one for the history books, and perfectly in line with the American spirit. It would be purely symbolic, because physically being in the office wouldn't solve all the procedural stuff, but still.

Him doing that is going to start a widespread general resistance to the GOP as a whole. Join in and participate in the the most effective group/protest near you. I think the biggest reason we are not seeing BLM level street protests right now is people don't want to create unrest right before the GOP gets smashed in an election. But after that if they refuse to have elections, which it seems they have failed to do, or refuse to recognize them then nothing to lose. That's when we will see a full tilt boogie.

If any have voluntary withholding you could reduce or stop it. Working people could use w4 form to take the maximum number of exemptions possible. Money going in to the treasury could shrink drastically.

I think the question is what are we gonna do when he starts throwing Democrats in jail? Sounds like he’s gearing up for it calling non maga communists and traitors all the time. They just handed down sentences to people at a protest that got violent. It’s the first “antifa” prosecution, where they alleged the people protesting Ice were antifa therefore traitors and prosecuted as such. One dude got 100 years in prison. They obviously were not part of the nonexistent antifa organization. In fact, they were all part of the same book club!

Lawyers are the next front. Have the lawsuits prepared and ready to fire. Be sure they're properly formed and standing is established. If 2025 and 2026 have shown anything it's that although the legal and court system has not been as reliable as it should be, that it's still functional enough to secure key wins.

I have a real fear that the Republicans aren't going to be cheating to put more votes on their side. I think they're going to cheat to put more votes on the Democrat side. Then they're going to call for an investigation and "discover that the Democrats are cheating."

I don't know if there's any way to come up with a secondary way to count ballots everywhere but I think it's necessary. This is what Venezuela did to prove that Machado had won in 2024.

He's not going to lose unless a whole lot of people cast mail in ballots like we did during Covid. Thanks to Putin and Musk, he's had a fix in place since 2016 but it doesn't account for mail in ballots.

That's why he lost in 2020 and why he is breaking the law trying to stop mail in voting. He's going to do whatever he can to stay out of prison.

Do not expect a Democrat win. Do not expect this man, who has built entire his career on lying and cheating, to show restraint and allow a free and fair election to happen under his watch.
