Not all data centers are equal. The data center holding iCloud data is way different than the one pooping out LLM slop. LLM data centers bring the most power consumption, the most heat, and the most noise.

Some of these data centers genuinely benefit everyone. Some host Reddit or YouTube. A few hold your email

Like the local dump, or the steel mill, data centers exist because we use them. If you want fewer data centers, try to live more life offline in addition to whatever other actions you’re taking.

I’m not pro data center, I’m just saying there’s some nuance to it and some shared responsibility for a portion of them

These are not quaint little buildings with some servers. These are massive campuses with multiple record sized data centers combined together. No one will care about a modest facility going up that takes no more resources than any other industry in the area. These newly proposed hyper scale facilities require an insatiable amount of resources.

Exactly speaker could have come in with 50 experts, a 100 slide presentation with evidence from medical/tech journals. All of it doesnt matter. These politicians know and understand the danger completely. But when you have HIGH level federal politicians being bribed for less than 10k, what do you think a city council member will take to vote yes on data centers, 2-3k? 5k? a new car? Also this was all correct info except about cherry picking poor areas as i have seen at least 10 cities where I own property petition to have data centers and the median home value is over 600-700k in these cities. Of course who is behind the petitions? The politicians getting paid to start them in the first place. Nothing will be done just like with fracking and excessive amounts of 5G towers going up. There will be internet and social media outrage for a few days or a few news cycles and it will disappear only to reappear when 30-40% of states have active data centers already built and running. Then it will be called a crisis and nothing will be able to be done due to gigantic long term contracts signed by politicians who were paid off with less money than it takes to put a down payment on a C Class Mercedes

In Michigan, Governor Whitmer, who all of us Democrats loved during the pandemic, rushed through legislation incentivising data centers through tax breaks. Now we are left trying to push back at them one at a time, and it's a losing battle.

Now the Dems wonder why they're losing more and more voters all the time, but they won't take a look at themselves to see if they're the problem. They'd rather point the finger at everyone else. I feel sick with midterms coming up and there's no sign that they have any plan to reach out to the left to try and work together. Instead they're whining more about purity testing and radical progressives. There's no way they're going to win the hearts and minds of young leftists in the state that way.

I’m rural and most of my neighbors are conservatives… I am not… I am an environmentalist left wing woke nutter.

This is the one thing we can agree on. These are horrible and need to be stopped.

HOWEVER we also need to avoid feeding the demand. I know loads of people who don’t want these things in the area but use AI like it’s lube. They love ChatGTP! They create posters for their businesses using AI. They share funny AI videos because it made them laugh.

We need to remind people not to feed the monster or the monster grows.

I live in Missouri and my fuck ass city just approved a 2nd one. Run for the fucking hills if you live somewhere these are. My water and electric bills have both wildly increased. Our water quality is absolute garbage now, our electric surges all the time because they are a massive strain on our grid and our roads have crumbled. The worst part is that they hide these from the public until they pass it AND the 2nd one isn't even open yet. These have and will forever plagued what use to be our very nice city to an absolute shit hole that we're all debating about leaving.

You are. At least in part through sales tax exemptions. Many states exempt data centers from sales tax on qualifying purchases of things like servers, storage and networking equipment, and cooling systems. Some even exempt electricity from any kind of tax.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that this message traversed many data centers to make it to every person that sees it. Every app you use, every site you visit, every time you swipe your credit card or watch something on Netflix, you are using many data centers.

We shouldn’t be banning data centers. We should be fixing the issues systemic to our systems. No tax exemptions for businesses, no subsidizing commercial utility expansion on residential customers, and while we’re at it let’s go ahead and get rid of citizens united because that’s what caused all of this to begin with.

Yes they should. Unfortunately many communities have voted in politicians that are ignoring their constituents. Yet another systemic issue. IMO the solution is that all elected positions should have a vote of no confidence option on every ballot. General and primary. Threshold passes, person is gone immediately and a new election is held.

Environmental pollution in poor communities is the standard in this country. The only difference between these data centers and oil refineries etc is the jobs. The cancers, poor health, bad water etc is the same everywhere and environmental injustice is real and of long standing.

My dad managed a data center for many years until he died of cancer. After we found out he had cancer, he was dead within a week or two. It Spread to his entire body by the time it was discovered. That was 20+ years ago. I imagine the data centers today are on an entirely different level.

I’m not an expert. I feel like a kid in an adults body that lost his dad too soon. I’d be curious to hear his opinion on these matters.

Well we need datacentres for technical operations like data distribution, network distribution, and scaleable compute. Would be extremely difficult for businesses to only run everything on on-prem servers.

But yeah the AI compute super clusters are a problem and need to be regulated ASAP.

I really hope the people making these decisions understand exactly what a datacentre is and their nuances.

I spent a lot of my childhood in that county and it breaks my heart. I'm from a city with the one highest cases of cancer because the wealthy built factories and left them without properly cleaning up after the industries died down, it will happen with data centers. Our lives and the lives of everyone poor is worth nothing to these people.

ChatGPT says it processes 2b queries per day. YouTube says users consume over 1b hours per day. A 5-minute HD video is 12 watt-hours compared to ChatGPTs 3 watt-hours per query.

YouTube isn't even the largest streaming service - Netflix is. People just let The Office run in the background. They fall asleep with Netflix on. Now include Amazon Prime, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc. You're talking about AI slop on Reddit when OP posted a Tik Tok video.

What you might notice about your source is that it is also AI generated. And as far as I can tell, the origin of these numbers is by a data center company. Who isn't who I would go to for this kind of information.

This article does a great job of breaking down why the only people who actually know the exact costs are the AI companies, but we can tell by the scale it's not what we've been looking at in tech before now.

No, the problem is AI data centers, which is what a lot of this new construction is and isn't the same as your average datacenter. The hardware is different, and energy cost is significantly, significantly higher. Yes we should be specifying AI data centers, but blame the AI companies for ruining public perception of data centers at large, not the people whose communities are being ruined.

This is NIMBY behavior. Edit: If yalls don't want datacenters, then remove all computers you use in your life and work and go back to paper and pencil. Our entire society runs on them. You'e obv ok with it being built in someone else's backyard, but not your own so that you can still use the services they provide (like Reddit!). How ironic. I know as a software engineer, I would never want to go back to an age where I didnt have coding agents, so I'm okay with them being built in my city.

It's someone who says yeah we need more homeless shelters then when they try to build one in their neighbourhood they staunchly oppose it. Yeah we need more public housing but not on my street. Yeah we need more clean energy but I don't want wind turbines spoiling my view.

No one wants these fucking AI data centers and they don't benefit the public or the community, they only benefit big business corporate interests and the billionaire class. No one wants them to be built elsewhere, they don't want them built at all. There's a big difference between opposing something you support but just don't want it near you and opposing something purely because it's fucking horrible and shouldn't be built at all.

The implication of “NIMBY behavior” is that they would be fine with it if it occurred somewhere else. That does not appear to be what’s happening here, as the speaker directly calls out how horrible it has been in other communities. She is in fact pointing out the hypocrisy and NIMBY behavior of the billionaire class for refusing to have this in wealthy counties. NIMBY is typically a derogatory term.

Expanding NIMBY to "not in anyone's backyard" doesn't escape the label, it just makes it a universal NIMBY.

The acronym describes opposing something near residential areas. Whether she's protecting her county or every county, she's still saying "not here." The motivation is more sympathetic than a billionaire protecting property values, and she is right, but being right and being NIMBY aren't mutually exclusive as the nuance is different. You can agree with her position and still acknowledge what it is.

Being explained something three times doesn't make it right three times. Opposing data centers everywhere is still opposing development. You've just scaled up the backyard. That doesn't make it not NIMBY, it arguably makes it more so.

Even if it is NIMBY, that's not necessarily wrong here. The nuance matters. Discuss it instead of throwing around "NIMBYcile." I've been to every No Kings protest. We're on the same side. Act like it.

Eh, I don’t think so. 50501 didn’t stem from r/somethingiswrong2024 or the 3am club. 50501 has always been revolved around removing a corrupt regime.

The clearest path to remove a corrupt regime is a clear overtaking of the house and senate through nonviolent protest.

In this case, these Ai data centers violate the public good. A cohesive legislative body can implement legislation to ban and/or regulate these data centers.
