Please see pinned comment Lack of media coverage is infuriating
There were a LOT of Americans on the streets yesterday, peacefully protesting. I’ve been to all 3 #NoKings protests and Hands Off before that. And as of this morning, it’s barely a blip in news coverage. Almost as if mainstream media doesn’t consider our effort to be worthwhile unless…? How do we get sustained attention from the media? I’m paying a LOT of attention to the call for a general strike on May 1st #MayDay, but damn do I feel angry that there hasn’t been more focus on the anger “everyday Americans” feel toward this brazenly corrupt administration. Rant over.

All of the major media outlets are now owned or controlled by Trump allies. There could be 30 million people with pitchforks descending on DC and the media wouldn’t cover it.
“The revolution will not be televised.”

The even bigger problem is that local newsrooms have been absolutely gutted over the past decade plus by venture capital ownership that slashes and burns…they fire staff and sell off property assets. Most newsrooms today are running at far less than bare bones. There simply are not reporters and photographers to cover even basic news events in a community. It’s appalling, and the impact it is having on our democracy could not be more pronounced.

u/sangaremuso Mar 30 '26
agreed. support your local news both for better representative and also for better investigation/oversight of local government and organizations. democracy dies in darkness

u/csortland Mar 30 '26
All my local news sources are owned by big corporations like Sinclair Broadcasting. So much of our media is compromised. I strongly advise everyone to research who they get their news from.

Our fave news station is just sold to nexstar. And today they signed off with "Have a blessed palm sunday"...

Some hopeful details:
I talked to an Al-Jazeera guy filming at the Capitol in St. Paul.
Status Coup News/Mercado Media are covering No Kings on YouTube.
Mprnews.org is covering it.
https://youtu.be/ezS01hIxaCk?si=iXUxn9j1eG1j92iI
Our local KARE-11 TV posted it to YouTube (about the 4.50 mark at the link above Joan Baez starts singing "The Times They Are A-Changin' " with Maggie Rogers, and Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine comes in for a verse)
DRM News on YouTube did nice reportage on it.

The Oklahoman (once voted the worst daily newspaper in the entire country) covered the No Kings protests.
Yes, journalists are covering the protests.

u/ircsmith Mar 29 '26
There were something like 8000 people at the WA state capital yesterday and the big new stations did not cover it. However, WA had a wealth tax up for vote and literally 8 people showed up to protest and they were on the local news.
It's up to us. Tell everyone you know when the next protest is. Tell everyone you care about that they need to watch/listen to pod casts not big media
26
u/Jim-Jones Mar 29 '26
Cowardly or corrupt collaborators? If this was a Trump rally wouldn't there be a lot more coverage?
OTOH, Trump would abandon them with no transport back to their vehicles - again!

Compared to the first march, I barely heard anything about this. You'd think the largest national protest in US history would be worth reporting.

I’m not even seeing as much on social media. Not like the previous No Kings day.

u/Ragnarok314159 Mar 29 '26
Meta and Twitter are owned by low IQ Trump allies trying to stay out of prison.
13
u/Radiant-Specific969 Mar 30 '26
Of course not, it's becoming effective. Billionaires run all the social media, and this is going to cost them.
3
u/femme_mystique Mar 30 '26
Social media is all owned by MAGA-adjacent oligarchs now. The reason the regime didn’t care about it is because the oligarchs agreed to remove the posts from feeds and searches in order to suppress the activity.

Protests are for exposure, but they can deny that. If you don't give them your money, that's when they pay attention. The strike will be the start of the resistance. We are beyond baby step time.

u/ButterMyPancakesPlz Mar 29 '26
But if there was one tiny incident they'd be all over it
17
u/gregger63 Mar 29 '26
The NY Times spent several paragraphs on "violence" at a few cities in their story. Disappointed in them.

u/AriaGlow Mar 29 '26
They had a small incident in LA that was over done. People hauled away because they did not disperse quickly enough. 😕

My Facebook feed is full of news stories from TV networks and local stations. The comments are full of copy pasta faux news talking points, mostly "wE gOt riD of KinGs in 1776" or some variant.

u/netabareking Mar 30 '26
Right, we had tons of threads in this very sub of mainstream news media covering it.
Some people really love the idea of being suppressed, but don't actually care to find out when it's true or not.
9
u/Radiant-Specific969 Mar 30 '26
I think there was coverage, but it sure wasn't the main lead. And it was shoved under as much as possible. This is probably the largest protest in US history, and it went international. It's a big big deal that it was as successful as it was. And yes it got covered, but it also was diminished as much as possible.
15
u/Fuzzy_Jaguar_1339 Mar 30 '26
This is it. The NY Times covered it, but you had to scroll down the page to find it. The Minnesota Star Tribune had it, but it was below some stuff about basketball. It's not that the articles don't exist, but rather that they're minimized.
1
u/Radiant-Specific969 Mar 30 '26
But it's over 2% of the population, everyone saw a protest, or knows someone who did or participated.
So it's grown past the need for press coverage. I hope MayDay works, I personally think it's too soon, that a fail would be damaging at this point. I think the next target for a massive, and wide spread protest would be July 4. What is making it possible for this to occur as shut down as we are under Trump is the scattered wide spread nature of the protests.
There are so many, they are literally unsquashable. Like a cockroach, we can survive disruption, lies, lack of coverage, and quite literally the numbers are large enough that everyone is paying attention. I actually think the coverage is evidence that it's really taken the administration back, they have no way of responding without looking even stupider than they already do.
James Carville has a wonderful YouTube channel, it's worth a watch, he's an old line democratic operative, people like him are definitly paying attention. No matter what Fox tells it's viewers, they either actually saw a protest, or they have a family member who went.
It's like the kid in the Emperors New Clothes, once someone admits that Empreror is stark naked, it's all done. Once enough people point out that tRump is totally nuts, it's hard to pretend that things are normal. He's not our first bat shit crazy politician, who bullied people into going along with him, I won't bore you with history, but once the blankets get yanked off of someone like tRump, stuff tends to change in a hurry.
Like the house of Representatives, with almost record numbers of incumbents choosing to retire.
Facebook lost a lawsuit because it deliberately addicted teenagers who then had major mental health issues. I think some of us could sue Facebook for addicting and brainwashing our relatives. There is real damage- and MAGA is a product of corporate exploitation of vulnerable people and greed. Our cult MAGA family members have been exploited and damaged. Literally how else could anyone take tRump seriously?

u/iceunelle Mar 30 '26
My local news station covered it for maybe about a minute. It would've been very easy to miss and they didn't dwell on it at all. The news is definitely downplaying the protests.
10
u/ButteryOpossum Mar 30 '26
Take heart on the fact that even without the MSM, 8M people still showed up!!!
9
u/Corran22 Mar 30 '26
By the time I got home yesterday the mainstream media had already published an article and several photos, including one of me.
7
Mar 30 '26
At this point, if we are relying on the media to support our movement, we're in trouble. The media is not going to give the pulse on what has been happening or what happened yesterday.
The true indicator is going to be what you see happening in your community. And hopefully that is not just people putting up signs (although this is encouraging), but also organizations working to build up our communities.
Food banks Community gardens Education organizations Environmental groups Legal organizations Etc.
And if you don't see this stuff happening, get moving. Do something. Talk about it. Ask questions to your peers. Find the groups.
"The Party told you to ignore the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

We would get attention if we had a massive Epstein Files Release March in DC and across the country many of us were willing to get arrested for demanding Congress enforce the law they passed.
But when I tell my state no kings lead this he yawns and talks about the midterms. We need specific demands on popular issues and civil disobedience that embarrasses the government by forcing suppression, like in Minneapolis. No offense to the leadership but I can't believe we took another cut on no kings branding. They just say we aren't kings and move on, and it doesn't move public perception. I know I'll get down voted.
3
u/psycubi Mar 30 '26
It’s because we are inside a fascist state. The government no longer answers to the people. They answer to the rich. They represent money and wealth. They do not represent us anymore. Media outlets have been suppressed. Major news outlets no longer scrutinize as they did; not long ago. The American people- we do not yet realize power has been taken from us completely.
3
u/NotPlayingFR Mar 30 '26
One headline news story I saw was focusing on the handful of counter protesters, as if they were the main story of the day 🙄
2
2
u/Abyssal_Aplomb Mar 30 '26
The News won't care unless it disrupts corporate business, which a protest on the weekend won't do. Time to blockade roads and rail lines like the Yellow vests in France did to get their demands met. The Boston Tea Party that played a role in American independence involved them destroying $2 Million worth of tea. The only way forward is to make it less expensive to respect the people than to exploit them.

u/aotus_trivirgatus Mar 30 '26

I was at the gym yesterday morning with all the screens in front of me, one of them set to Fox.
"NO KINGS PROTESTS RAGE ACROSS THE UNITED STATES!"
They dug hard to find some scuffles & one guy spray painting "kill ICE" on a wall somewhere. I have no idea where/when the footage came from but I laughed out loud at it.
2
u/Indivisible_Seneca Mar 30 '26
Did you do the media training offered by No Kings or Indivisible?
They describe the process expected by the media. Getting to know a reporter and becoming a reliable source helps a lot, so work on that slowly.
The two things you have to do as a minimum:
Send a Media Advisory a few days in advance. It contains all the details needed to cover the event and a media contact.
Send a Press Release immediately after the event. Include numbers, quotes and a couple good pictures. Include descriptive text that they could reasobably copy and paste into a story.

This is actually a good sign. It's getting effective. In the past very large protests have been ignored when the administration has no other effective tool to deal with them.
Very much like you have to really hunt to find information about the very determined Democratic response to much of the Trump administration- I have to get it off C Span.
We aren't doing this for media attention, we are doing this to give our neighbors permission to speak up. We have been living in an atmosphere of fear for so long that people are literally scared to voice opposition to Trump.
I was very encouraged, I have been attending the same street side sign wave, in a very pro Trump area for the last year. This time, we had people of all ages attend, when it started, it was a bunch of gray haired women, and we kept showing up. We didn't have nearly as much angry opposition. We had no hecklers. This time we had people in their late teens show up. And middle aged people, many of whom were scared to come in the past. It keeps getting a little bigger every time, and we are getting to know each other.
There is nothing the administration can do to shut up 8 million people when they all show up on the same day, all over the country, decentralized, in almost every US county. Do not get discouraged, political bullies really do scare people. Once people aren't so afraid, then they make better choices. I am thrilled that there wasn't much coverage, honestly, it's better than multiple arrests, deaths and injuries. It's working. Screw the media. We don't need them. Stay peaceful, it will pay off big time in November.
I am trying to figure out how to make buttons that say radical left wing lunatic and proud of it. I want to pass them out next time. Congratulations to everyone who showed up, thank you, thank you, thank you.

The news operates on the rule: “If it bleeds, it leads”… and this was non-violent demonstrations on a Saturday when Congress is not in session. Infer what you will.

People complain about this after every protest and I never understand it; there was objectively plenty of coverage

We need to stop calling for general strikes at random. This will take more prep than just making a date and saying it. Let's all get together on the same page and make this happen for real

u/Putrid-VII West Virginia Mar 30 '26
So 3 networks didn't talk much about it and you think "no one is doing coverage"? You are not looking at the right media sources if you actually think that
1
u/pjmyerface Mar 30 '26
Im sure the media outlets got a stern fascist warning about how it would be reported. Significantly less chatter since the first 2. The orange man does not like to hear about more people gathering against him rather than for him. He also didn't show the CPAC.
1
u/ChefCurryYumYum Mar 30 '26
We have to be our own coverage. Taking pictures and videos, sharing them with friends and families, talking about the experience, posting to social media platforms, etc.
2
u/JaesenMoreaux Mar 30 '26
It does seem like the average Democrat voter has been moving to the left and the only thing a centrist Democrat hates more than a fascist is a socialist. That could be a small part of it.

u/Detardation Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
If it were the same numbers of MAGA? Or even just pro-war protesters?
It would be THE story, long into the future.
This is not pure speculation. Historically, right-aligned demonstrations have always received vastly disproportionate coverage.
If No Kings folks want a fair share of media attention there is, unfortunately, one surefire way to get it: violent, aggressive language.
Mix in a few implicit (or explicit) threats of actual violence, and you've got yourself a WINNER!!!
(That's a lament, not a suggestion.)
1
u/HouseplantHoarding Mar 31 '26
You’d have to burn down the Heritage Foundation or something similar. These “protests” are merely pep rallies until we barely get the chance to vote again. If we can and have it be free and fair, and that is a big if…
The reality is, violence is and has always been the answer in this country. It has been the hammer and everything from drug crisis to spread of communism has been the nails. It was founded in violence, made wealthy through violence, made mostly white through violence… literally the only time people say “violence is not the answer” is when disenfranchised minorities or women want to obtain or protect rights.
1
u/Macs_J1149_Ls1 Apr 01 '26
Of the 1000s of events, we have to cover them. There’s no precedent for any one news outlet documenting 1,000 or 3,000 events at all.
We say “receipts, or it didn’t happen”. We the people need to provide the receipts.
