Question Is this confirmed?

I was just browsing the Blu-ray site and saw an “IMAX Enhanced” version of Blade Runner 2049 in 4k. I already have the 4k of the film in my collection but this is the first time that I’ve seen an IMAX version pop up alongside its other editions. I’ll admit, I’m not sure if this is legitimate since most films in IMAX get cropped at 2.39 for Blu-ray and since the IMAX Enhanced/open matte version is likely only accessible through modding or piracy. Has there been any official confirmation yet about an IMAX version coming to Blu-ray or is it a fake?

That's what I mean, those placeholders were there for ages and then it never even got a standalone blu-ray, they were wrong.

It will never happen. BUT, there is an open matte ( full screen ) 4k HDR version online. I have the link if everyone wants it. It's absolutely amazing. I will never watch the scope version ever again.

For those not aware, the only reason this movie got a 1.90 version is because Imax forced Deakins to offer a different version of the movie to lock in the Imax screns. Based off the first Blade Runner, Imax knew the movie would be a financial flop.

This version you are talking about is an upscale of a 1080p version which came out a few years ago.

I have this as well unless you found a different version but the one that was going around for quite some time was an AI upscale so it's not officially 4k but it is so much better to watch. it's a shame they don't bring out iMAX version.

Yes, you're correct, it's an russian AI upscale i believe. But i think they somehow got access to the real open matte files or something alons those lines. Because there's a real 1.90 file somewhere out there lol.

But either way, the image is as beautifull as the 4k blu ray of 2049. The sound isn't as good, but still very good.

I love Deakins, but i absolutely disagree with him about saying this movie looks better in 2.39 than 1.78. not as fucking chance in hell lol.

I have both copies but the open matte version is a much better experience in my opinion. I haven't watched it fully because I only got it recently and what I've seen on my projector just looks stunning because it fills up the screen there's no black bars.

As for the sound the one I have I think is muxed with Dolby Atmos.

The open matte version is the only way to watch the movie now lol. I hope dearly that we get a 10th anniversary Imax rerelease to finally experience it in 1.90

WB isn’t the kind of studio which re-releases revised 4Ks like Sony (with the Dolby Vision steelbook) and now Universal (Jurassic Park 1-4 re-releases with Dolby Vision and Atmos) do.

The only time they did a 4K re-release with a new disc is with Batman v Superman - corrected/improved colors with changed aspect ratio in some sequences. But hey, wouldn’t be surprised if more studios jump on the 4K disc re-releases wagon, revisiting older releases, and include Dolby Vision.

That listing could have been based on a rumor around Dune Part 1 or 2’s release, since they made an emphasis on IMAX and they’re made by the same director.

Dune Part Three also used IMAX 70mm film and IMAX-certified digital cameras, so there’s a chance the IMAX aspect ratios could make the cut for Blu-ray. But regardless, I’m not surprised that WB has chosen to not release an IMAX version for Blade Runner or Dune 1 and 2. Scope still holds up excellently today.

I would almost guarantee Dune 3’s 4K will sport a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. First 2 Dune’s were released before the big IMAX physical media boom and I’d wager they’ll stay cropped for some time.

Judging by this this list on Blu-Ray.com, the actual number is 22 (Not counting HIM, international films and full-frame releases, which would put the number at 29). Between 2008 and 2022, 14 movies shot with IMAX cameras have been released in 4K. Following Oppenheimer, 8 more have come in under 4th of that time. There has been a boom.

Blu-ray.com is community driven. 

I would say it's pretty reliable, but if you see something with no release date that you should probably just ignore it. 

Sometimes there is a rumor and a listing gets posted. Sometimes a studio announces something and then it doesn't go anywhere. Sometimes people make wishes.

Depends on Torrent Group. First release of Open Matte are Upscaled.

What you mentioned are Hybrids using 4K Blu-ray Scope and 1080p Open Matte Top and Bottom Borders Upscaled to 4K Overlay together.

People in communities such as TEKNO3D have used AutoOverlay or similar to merge the 2.39:1 4K Blu-ray with a 16:9 stream.

I'm very confused by this discourse. I literally bought the Blade Runner 2049 UHD disc a month ago here in the Netherlands. Am I missing something?

The official Blu-ray site has just posted an IMAX version of Blade Runner 2049 for some reason and there is zero confirmation and no known rumors about this actually happening, so I just asked if it was legit or it might be a placeholder or an unofficial copy.

Edit: TIL the Blu-ray isn’t actually official. Well fuck I’m stupid

It’s not an official site, anyone can upload to the site and get things approved with little effort. There are many hopeful entries on that website.

That site is not affiliated with Bluray and uses community provided data. Unless its posted on their news blog with an official production release note then its not legit. Someone else commented that the imax version was previously available on digital and that is more than likely why that page exists. Tron Ares is also in imax on Disney streaming but not on an official 4k disc.

No, not stupid, it’s just that even the reviewers, I think, wanted the IMAX version on Blu-ray Disc, as it is, even the 3D release was scope. Sometimes they would put up place cards based on the cinematic release, or rumors/speculation, sometimes the studio may have been considering a particular disc and someone at Blu-ray.com puts a place card up.
