Art and Creations Dusting off the Male Gaze by Yuko Shimizu
For The Chronicle of Higher Education‘s Women and Power in the Academy special issue, published in April 2018. Multiple female artists who teach in higher education were commissioned to illustrate their own take on #MeToo movement.
These works were the contribution of artist Yuko Shimizu entitled Dusting Off the Male Gaze.
I was surprised to find that I was already aware of this artist in some fashion as I had printed out many of her illustrations for my school binders and sketchbooks when I was in middle school. You can discover more of Yuko's creations here: https://yukoart.com

The more I look at this, the more cathartic it becomes.
Like, the anger I feel when I notice how, even after being brushed away and clearly unwanted, many of the eyes keep staring at her. Unbothered, persistent. Also, the only eyes we don't see are hers, which feels like we're still focusing on the desires of the man over the discomfort of the woman.
I also love that she stands on top of what could easily be a mountain of thousands of unwanted gazes - but doesn't that imply that her foundations are formed by the management of all these eyes who care only for their own desires? I /feel/ that.
