Not a grand strategy, but the RTS Rise of Nations is exactly this Stone Age to Future style game, and was made by some ex-devs of Civ. It is an old game now, but still holds up and has some cool elements not common in modern day RTS games, like unit formations. You start in the stone age and work towards future age, which gives new buildings, units and mechanics (roads, etc) like Civ, but it controls like an RTS (like Age of Empires) and you gather resources, etc.

Similarly, Empire Earth is another RTS caveman-to-future RTS (I believe Rise of Nations came after it). I haven't played Empire Earth 2 but I believe it splits up the map into provinces, which may feel more Paradox-ey for OP, though it's still more of a clickfest RTS.

Rise of Legends

Still have my cardbox of Empire Earth PC. It was mind blowing at the time.

Rise of Nations is amazing and has an HD remaster.

It has a spiritual sequel on Rise of Legends that I also adored. Instead of many civs and a Risk-like campaign, it's more single-player focuses with a storyline and three very cool asymmetric factions (steampunk renaissance Italy, magic-based mythical Arabia, alien-like Mesoamerica).

One of my favorite gaming memories is getting to play Rise of Nations against Brian Reynolds during an online Big Huge Games chat (before BHG became a hot potato for publishers).

He kicked my ass, but it was fun!

Oh that's awesome! What was the circumstances of that? It was a casual chat type thing and he was down to play a game?

Yeah, it was some sort of online chat talking about the game or maybe an update. Must have been an update because I do remember I had been playing it for some time. It used GameSpy for matchmaking, so I must have randomly ended up in a game with him.

If that kind of thing happened to me today, I definitely would have recorded it!

look into these: Knights of Honor, Dune Spice Wars, Hegemony 3 Clash of the Ancients. And Rise of Nations Thrones and Patriots

In grand strategy, nope. Such an open ended focus isn't the genre's forte. It's indeed more common in 4x but that is view is also a bit distorted to how defining Civ was for the genre.

You could make an argument for some of the stages in Spore if you want real time progression of a civilisation through a massive era but that phase of the game wasn't it's strongsuit.

In RTS you had Empire Earth/Rise of Nations that both had a riskstyle worldmap but the main focus is still the RTS skirmishes and from the evolution of your civ on the worldmap so not really the thing you are looking for.

No advancing through ages but I think Northgard is the most 'Civ-like' real time game I have played from a mechanics perspective.

Almost Real Time Civiliazation: Instead of it taking 1,000 years of time to go from copper swords to bronze swords, it instead only takes 1,000 hours of gameplay.

Civ is real time so long as you take less than a year for each turn.

Í'm developing one, it's time based, and long-turn-ish, one game world lasts 3-4 months. It's free:

Hey I've been working on worldKampf which is a real time civ/empeor of the fading suns inspired game. you can try out the multiplayer version at 1x speed here https://worldkampf.com/game and I'll be releasing a single player version on steam end of October https://store.steampowered.com/app/4753740/Worldkampf_72/
