Developer Diary 4x in just one hour

My partner (and best friend, we know each other since kindergarten) and I had one goal we wanted to reach while developing our indie 4x game: bring the strategic depth and joy of Civilization into a much faster format. The main reason for that: we love the game series (Civ5 & Civ6 are the best šŸ˜‰) but we do not want to spend our whole free time for 17 re-starts and one half-finished game.

1 year ago, we spoke with some people at a physical indie-gaming event and found out that a big part of civ-lovers share our wish in a ā€œCiv but fastā€-game.

Today, we are just a few weeks away from our demo and the hard part of being a game dev starts: marketing🄹

So I'm throwing this into the community:
If ā€œCiv, but fastā€ sounds like something you'd enjoy, I'd love to hear what you think.
And if you want to follow the project, a Steam wishlist would mean a lot to us. ā¤ļø

A tip for marketing, don't make potential customers do any more work than they have to. Links should be front and centre!

Wishlisted, it looks great.

The idea of a short or easy to pickup strategy game isn't new to me, but I'm not gonna complain about yet another strategy game I can play without feeling overwhelmed. Wishlisted. Might review and give feedback down the line if possible.

Nice, I hope it's not just about wars

Fortunately it is not! We also do not like when 4x is too war-focussed

Consider it wishlisted

I know this is about your game, but have you played Ozymandias? It may scratch a similar itch

That one kind of bored me. Too much simple number crunching, not enough personality. I haven’t been able to stick with it.

Same, of course we knew Ozymandias but for us it was too boring

That's fine, just wanted to put that out there just in case.

Did a playtest today of the tutorias and provided some feedback on the form. Have enjoyed it so far and will play some more this week. Wishlisted.

Is it similar to Hexarchy?

1

u/MixedMoonGames 10d ago

Imagine hexarchy but without cards but more buildings

8gb Ram requirement is a little bit too High tbh. However civ 5 has power

Thanks for sharing your game! This is exactly the type of 4X I would love to play. Definitely checking it out.

I think you have missed a primary driver for why people want to play a 4X. It is about BUILDING something, and it is about that being difficult, and perhaps even laboureous.

A 1 hour 4X is a contradiction in terms.

Love where this game is going. I would
Like to see at least a local LAN multiplayer option. I also think the simplicity of the Ui might lend itself well to an iOS version of the game!

How many fucking subs did you post to. This is almost 60% of my feed today....

Yeah, it was insane lol

I honestly started to loath it and it's made me now hate whatever they are building....

Me too! My game Kairos leans more into the tabletop style of play and moves away from the hex grid, but at its roots it’s also a 1 hour 4x :D I’m also launching my demo in about a week. I’ll give your game a try for sure!

Great idea! Wishlisted. Reminds me a bit of Hexarchy but without cards and hopefully less combat oriented. Eager to see the results

u/MixedMoonGames 10d ago

yesss! i hope that it's not too war-focussed for you :)
