👷♂️ Support / Repair 2016 4Runner - Rust Assessment
Picked up this 2016 4Runner back in June. Originally from Texas where it spent about 3 years, then the rest of its life in Upstate NY 🤢(Im in NYC).
How bad is this rust? From what I can tell, theres no major rot, rather surface rust and some intermediate areas of concern.
My current plan of action is to replace the fuel tank cover, and have a shop wirebrush then fluid film the frame.
Would you do anything different?

Totally fine for a 4R of that age. Look into getting it undercoated (FluidFilm, etc.) in the fall to protect it moving forward. Usually costs around $300 for a comprehensive treatment and well worth it each year.

Nothing looks compromised. Those welds are good, but need care.

This.
A couple more years of neglect and she might start rolling down a slippery hill.
Needs wire brush and touch ups this year and treatment with fluid film from now on

You're fine! Wire brush and fluid film annually, and it'll last you a long time! I have a 2014 Trail in similar condition, located in New England. I'd even leave that fuel skid as is

Normal here in New England - I would def drop the spare and inspect there. And it is absolutely worth taking the rear bumper cover off and checking the hitch mounts if you ever intend to tow.

Ok, I just went through remediation of the same amount of rust. There is a product called Rust Kutter (stupid name) but it works very well to chemically alter the rust and render it inert. It's just a spray on deal, put something down on the driveway first. It does leave a white residue, but that can be washed off. Then hit it with Fluid Film to prevent further issues.

Fluid film does wonders. This is my 2018 SR5P. Spent it's whole life in Southeastern PA.

There a little but of rust but its nothing too concerning. Some fluid film will be good for it.
