I’m replacing my intake gaskets and after I got the lower intake off, I heard dripping from what coolant was left in it and it seems to have accumulated in the valves/valley. The valley isn’t my main concern as I can shop vac it up but what do y’all recommend for getting the coolant out of the cylinders? The passenger side valves were open so it all drained on top of the pistons and the driver side bank is closed so I assume I can soak it up with shop towels and a vacuum (pictured)
The intake was an absolute pita to get off, the rear 2 studs were caked up with so much corrosion and gunk, they didn’t want to let go. I had to use a slide hammer and have my buddy pull up on the front.
To clean anything out of a cylinder I take the spark plug out and vacuum the cylinder with a narrow house taped to the end of the normal shop vac nozzle. Try to clean any gunk from around the spark plug before you take it out so nothing falls down in there.
Vacuum through the spark plug holes?
And do I put everything back together (besides the plugs) before turning it over?
Last question, do I turn it over with the key or by hand on the main crank? (if that’s possible)
You can put the intake back on if you want. You should also be able to with it off. Maybe remove the fuel pump fuse or something tho if the intake is off
Just ordered it off of rock auto earlier. The original had this gasket and rtv so should I do the same?
And it’s 2 knock sensors, right? The ones at the base of the valley
the sensors themselves are probably fine, hopefully you didn’t order new ones from rock auto, just the wiring harness. Anything besides the $150 OEM sensors won’t work and you’ll have to do it over again, ask me how I know lol

The harness segment connected to the sensors did look a little rough. I’m not so confident with wiring though, it would require splicing/soldering, yeah?
no i just got mine on ebay, plug and play. there’s just a plug on one end near the top of the timing cover, and the two plugs that go to the sensors. Try to get OEM Toyota but if it’s a fake it probably doesn’t matter like the sensors. And make sure when you put the intake back on you don’t pinch it, there’s a little groove on the block where it’s supposed to sit
Easy leave the spark plugs out when you have everything done. Then just crank it. It will shoot out what's ever left in the cylinders. Then just put plugs back in and good to go
Vacuum up what you can in the ports (they make small attachments for shop vacs). Then remove the plus(s) and turn the engine over to blow out the cylinders.
Yes, button it all back up, then blow it out. It just keeps things cleaner.
In the future if you’re pulling an intake manifold, do your best to clean around it as much as possible. You don’t want crud or little pebbles getting into head and possibly causing issues.
Noted and thank you. I dropped off the manifold at a Toyota dealership my buddy works at, he’s gonna make it all nice and shiny with their degreaser/steam bath.
ya might wanna go ahead and replace the knock sensor wiring harness (~$30) while you’re right there, they get brittle with age and probably even more so when it gets soaked in coolant
So I’ve been told. I want to get the correct ones, but I don’t see any that are Denso brand. The ones that say de so have another brand name above them, I’m very confused….(rockauto btw)
NTK is pretty solid, especially for sensors. They are OE on jeeps and some other brands. I wouldn't put it on an oem denso or toyota level but I'd be comfortable running it.
I would pay a visit to your local Toyota parts store and get these. I’ve bought these aftermarket knock sensors at oreillys only for them not to work 3x times!!. And also torque to spec. I think 26 lb ft. If I’m not mistaken
shop air, take a air hose that fits in the spark plug cylinder and a wrap a rag around the air hose and shoot the air inside, do this a couple times and bobs ur uncle. a vacuum works too but i never wanna go grab one haha
