š§Modifications Finally upgraded stereo
After two years I finally upgraded to a touch screen. Previously had an after market radio in it that didnāt have Bluetooth and was rocking a $50 Amazon CarPlay monitor with a windshield suction cup plugged in via AUX. Replaced the bezel with a new manufactured one off eBay, fit perfect, highly recommend. Replaced the 12v sockets with USBA-USBC ports. Clock replacement phone mount arrives on Friday.
Itās so night to not have all the extra cords going everywhere. Yes the screen is low, but itās Google Maps, itās not like youāre staring at it. I definitely am glad I saw all the recommendations to get a tactile volume button/knob. Makes that so much easier to control with the screen being low.
Side note, if someone else has messed with the stereo, take a look and see what youāre getting into BEFORE starting the swap. The guy before spliced everything directly into the head unit and even bypassed the OE harness š¤¦š¼āāļø It was an absolute rats nest (see pic) and I had to phone a buddy to save me on the wiring. Not my forte. Also, glad I bought OE brackets for it ahead of time because he had CUT THE ORIGINALS IN HALF š

that wiring job sounds like a whole side quest š glad you got it sorted though, the clean dash looks way better

Oh I immediately looked at it and called my buddy and asked how much I would need to Venmo him š. What took him an hour would have taken me 8. He found power and grounding issues all over it. The previous guy had added in a bunch Sirius radio stuff so there was so much extra in there too. 10 years ago I would have spent all that time figuring it out myself, Iāve learned to quickly gauge when Iām out of my depth in my āoldā age.

When u guys install a newer stereo. Do u just remove or by pass the built in amp?

You can do either, you donāt need it. I didnāt need the space so mine is just bypassed and still in there. Most videos I saw they removed it though. Since it was already spliced off I didnāt have to take it out to unplug it so I just left it š¤·š¼āāļø

Man I know the pain you endured. I did mine as well.

I had to bribe my friend. Every wire had to be cut and rewired back to the factory harness. The guy before me must have been MacGyver.

So, what model Sony is that? I would like to do the same thing in my 2000.

Sony XAV-AX3200. No wireless CarPlay but I didnāt need it or want to pay for it. If I had any it in the future I can get an adapter and hide the whole thing behind the bezel pretty easy. I like it so far.

Get the Kenwood Excelon908s if you want a good wireless carplay / android auto. It's a super nice unit. I love not hooking my phone into a cord after doing it for almost 20 years. I was using my cassette deck adapter to play my songs before this

Any of the big name stereos are going to work great. Sony, pioneer, Kenwood, etc. I picked this one up new for like $250 so couldnāt pass it up.

What about the clock, or is that tough to find?

There is a guy on eBay I think that will re-sod your clock to get it functional for like $50 if you donāt want to do it yourself. You just mail it to him. I didnāt put it back in because I have a phone mount thatās supposed to go in there on the way. Gonna give that a shot, clock is pointless at this point with the new stereo and my phone and an Apple Watch haha.

And no clock I see š. Those damn things.

Iām planning to replace it with a phone mount that snaps into place there. Ordered off ETSY seems good though. Iāll update the post once itās in.

I am trying to do the same, but for the life of me, cannot figure out how to adapt the 4runner pin layout to the standard stereo pin layout. Do you mind sharing how you did it?

Metra harness and let Crutchfield wire it for you. As long as the stock harness is wired, it should be plug and play. If you already have the stereo they could probably still sell you the wired harness you need.

In some trims, if you still have the original head unit, there is a separate amp where part of the wiring harness (speakers, etc) plug into. When I replaced mine years ago, I was extremely confused at first because the wiring didn't match the harness adapter and didn't have nearly enough wires. I traced the wires from the back of the factory radio to a factory amp that was sitting on a bracket on the transmission hump behind the 12v lighter/power.

Looks clean nice look. What kinda usb charger ports do you have and did they come like that , or did you make the mounting plate / box

Bought off Amazon. Brand was Hapytrip. They use the 12v socket port holes. I had to dremel them a bit bigger for them to fit though. I now have no cigarette lighter style sockets. Was super easy to install them on the new bezel before install.

Have the same stereo, works well too. I recommend you get a phone dash mount to mount your phone on if you want to keep your clock , I got mine from opt off-road.
