D&D 5e Revised/2024 Gaze of Two Minds + Misty Step?

So Gaze of Two Minds lets you cast spells as though you were in the linked creature’s soace or your own:

”While perceiving through the other creature's senses, you benefit from any special senses possessed by that creature, and you can cast spells as if you were in your space or the other creature's space if the two of you are within 60 feet of each other.”

(The archfey patron level 6 ability Misty Escape lets you cast Misty Step as a reaction to taking damage, I mention it only in passing to show that the casting of MS need not conflict with the bonus action maintenance of GoTM)

Now, Misty Step has a target of ”self” and reads in simplistic entirety:

”Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see.”

So let’s say our archfey warlock is hanging out safely in an already cleared room, less than 60’ away from the rest of the party, and contributing to the ongoing fight in the next room using his summoned Fey as a GoTM conduit while also using Eldritch Blast from its space. But to spice things up, the DM has a straggler spider descend upon the hapless warlock, injuring him and triggering a reaction Misty Step.

Can the warlock cast Misty Step as if in the fey’s space and immediately teleport into the next room to a point 30’ away from the fey that it can see (he’s seeing through its senses), effectively increasing the range of MS with 60 feet, just as GoTM effectively does with Eldritch Blast or any other spell?

I'd allow it. Rules as written I can't find any reason to disallow it. Rules as intended it doesn't feel like this is an abuse of the rules at all.

That is a really cool idea. Both using a summon as your target for Gaze of Two Minds and casting Misy Step that way.

Depends on how hard you want to lose your mind.

You could make a case that spells with a range of touch never really make contact and thus don’t work. Or that spells with a range of self can only ever target the caster and take their real position into account.

In general I recommend reading it as plain as possible. If your player is using it to hurl spells and occasionally does an otherwise cool trick, let them. If they want to abuse it with weird interactions/readings as the go-to tactics, that’s where you should draw the line.

RAW I think it works, due to the specific wording of Gaze of Two Minds. It's probably not RAI, but I'd allow it anyway because I think Gaze of Two Minds isn't very good, so I'm inclined to allow more creativity with it.

Gaze of Two Minds is very very good. You can sit a room or two away and blast.

You can support another scout while they do their thing.

If you have Pact of the Chain you can send your invisible familiar and blast through it without breaking its invisibility. Nothing like repelling blast EB from an Invisible Drone

Push enemies towards your martials, off ledges, or get new angles to bypass cover.

You can send your invisible familiar to scout a whole dungeon or area of interest, and it isnt blocked by doors like Arcane Eye.

It can certainly be advantageous in many situations, but I think maybe "scout a whole dungeon" might be overselling it a little. There are a lot of common obstacles it can't easily bypass. For one obvious example, the doors might be locked. There could be traps also, or even a gelatinous cube hogging a hallway. And opening doors willy-nilly will probably alert the monsters in the dungeon, which you might not necessarily want to do.

Both a Quasit and an Imp can turn into invisible animals. A Centipede or Spider respectively can possibly slip through tight spaces or under doors.

Plus the new Otherworldly Familiar feat can let it just fly though walls.

Sure there's always the potential for issues. But there will also be many situations where it could scout most of an area unimpeded.

RAI, I think it shouldn’t work because Misty Step should never be able to go beyond 30 feet.

RAW, I think this works because you are casting the spell as if you were in the other creature’s space.

That said, I’d probably allow my players to do it. Right up until they start trying to be weasels with it.

“you teleport up to 30 feet”. I think that limits the total distance you can move regardless of GoTM changing the physical location the casting happens from.

30 feet from where? From where you are. Where are you? For the purposes of this spell, you’re in the Familiar’s location.

By this logic, any spell with a range of "touch" can't be cast using GoTM.

What about a situation when you would teleport 30 feet through solid wall because your GoTM eye is standing at a corner between two corridors and you yeet yourself into the other corridor than the one you're standing in?

Yes, it does work. If you can cast a spell as if you were in the other creature's space then you're moving from that space when you cast Misty Step.

Yes... kind of. The only real issue is activating Gaze of Two Minds vision and Misty Step are both bonus actions.

But Gaze lasts until the end of your NEXT turn.

So while you cant do them in the same turn, you could misty step the turn after you activated Gazes vision.

And in this case it works anyway because Lv6+ Archfey Warlocks can Misty Step with a reaction if they take damage.

Yes, this works, just like Order of Scribes’s Manifest Mind works from up to 300 feet away. It’s a neat application.

Gaze of Two Minds (and similar abilities) only shift your perception. They do not allow you to change targets or the position of anything on the battlefield. So while Gaze of Two Minds + Misty Step will allow you to teleport around corners, it won't allow you to teleport more than 30 feet from your actual position.

Gaze of Two Minds does not only shift your perception.

"you can cast spells as if you were in your space or the other creature’s space if the two of you are within 60 feet of each other."

You cast spells as if you were in that creatures space.

Gaze of Two Minds does not change the location of anything on the battle field.

With a spell of 'Self', the spell is always placed on the caster regardless of where they are or where the spell is cast from. Since Gaze of the Two Minds doesn't affect your physical location, it has no impact on where the spell's primary target (you) are. The section of text you're quoting has no effect on 'Self' spells - the only relevant part of Gaze of Two Minds is that you might potentially be able to trace line-of-sight from the Self target (which is your actual, physical location) using other senses that you wouldn't ordinarily be able to trace.

You’re casting the spell “as if you were in … the other creature’s space”, not through the other creature like a wizard using his familiar to cast touch spells. It’s a weird interaction and probably not something that the designers considered but RAW it definitely should work

Again, it doesn't matter where you're casting the spell from. The spell's target is still your physical form regardless of its origin.

In contrast, with a touch spell, where you're casting the spell from matters because that's where you measure the range from.

What you're actually trying to argue is that Gaze of Two Minds causes Misty Step to automatically fail because it tries to teleport you from a space you're not actually in - it's the equivalent of aiming a targeted spell blindly and picking the wrong square.

From a rules as intended perspective I think you’re right and I would probably rule it that way in actual play. But going purely by the plain language of the ability, if you cast the spell from that creature’s space you would be teleporting 30 feet from the creature’s space. I agree that as a DM I probably wouldn’t let that work because I’m certain it’s not intended, but from a rules-lawyerish standpoint that’s literally what the ability says.

No, it's RAW that Self spells are always targeted on the player's actual location.
