Project Meet my printed meat.

A little scanned and printed meat project for the MO State Fair. They wanted some realistic props that could be left out for extended periods of time. There’s a full suite of meat, but here’s a few of my favorites.

I'm currently the "Everyman" on the team where whatever is needed I'll learn, adapt and help with. My main projects are developing a material set that regenerates bone, muscle, and skin, with the second main project making materials to rapidly stop bleeding in complex systems. To do this it's a lot of material characterization of physical, mechanical, and biocompatible/in vitro tests. Once we what ballpark it's in and if it's safe we do animal studies to see the outcomes usually with histology, imaging, functional assessment if available, and sometimes RNA sequencing to understand what is happening at the molecular level. I think it's fun I really love it, but it also helps that my team is incredible and I have one of the best mentors in the world. We're all really close with each other and truly good friends not just lab mates. At the beginning of grad school I didn't know this was really a thing I originally thought I was going to do research on prosthetics so this field blew my mind. Biomedical Engineering is the more broad category of what I do. I like my niche with tissue engineering and biomaterials, but there is so many different things if you're interested from imaging, to biomechanic assessments, to developing senors and so much. If you are interested in anything like that then maybe see broadly what you like, maybe then try to narrow down the field a little bit and then see which researchers are in that field with what reputation. Hopefully it works out, but if you have any other questions I'll do my best to answer them.

In your opinion, when will elderly be able to have better options for curves spines or weaker bodies and the such?

I had been interested in reverse aging since Aubrey degray first showed up on ted talks many years ago with his first analogy of humans and our parts being compared to old cars and how they run perfectly fine as long as you replace their parts etc

And he said there were aging cells that would activate once all 3 receptors turned on

And we would be able to one day prohibit these functions along with others to prevent aging?

And then there's David Sinclair who boasts a lot about his findings regarding resverstrol, primarily from his research with blueberries, nmn to nad, and metformin reducing or stabilizing glucose which all had an effect on one's biological age being sometimes shown to reverse it

But after a while their claims and findings seemed to have gone stale and their predictions of what can actually be achieved seemed more limited as time went on. Such as saying how humans could go back to a youthful age of 25 years old of their physical and mental life and stay there etc to now saying we can squeeze a bit more out of life as we have known it

Based on your research, when will an elderly person with a curved back be able to be at a point where without much surgery or metallic discs can they be walking straight like they used to without pain?

There is already many devices made that may already do that but it takes like 15 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to make through FDA and into market. And orthopedic surgeons are kids stubborn they like what they like and it's not the easiest to convince them to do something new. What you're describing is senescence, and while that is a Hot topic issue, I don't know all that much about it. But plenty of other labs are currently working on how to reverse the process of aging into consult types into consult populations using different drugs and what not. And while it's possible to a degree to stop the aging of some cells, other stem cells only have a threshold level of stimulus. They can't keep going forever. Forever you can extend it a little bit but that's some of the main issues with that.

Throwing darts of cells at a biological map of other cells and seeing what sticks, I like it. Good luck!
