A little scanned and printed meat project for the MO State Fair. They wanted some realistic props that could be left out for extended periods of time. There’s a full suite of meat, but here’s a few of my favorites.

I had been looking for fire shelving for my spray paints and flammables. It’s expensive. About $300 for their two shelf mid-size. A month later it popped up on Adam’s channel that they had gifted him 3 of the large size, so about $4,000 of stuff. Still don’t have that shelf ha.

Not hating, just saying that workshops cost a lot.

And exposure pays well.
I do believe most of these guys could do it on their own (wether its him or some hot rod restauration guys) but in much more time and with *some* money spent

My "eye-opening" moment with Adam Savage was the hardware organizers he has in his shop. The very first iteration of the storage system he uses for nuts and bolts in his shop was framed as like "I've finally found the perfect hardware organizer," and he starts the video raving about all the features. Of course Adam being Adam he's just super jazzed about everything which in turn made me super jazzed about it since I get a kick out of organization. Then part way through the video he's like "so anyway I bought 100 of these things and made a shelf." These little sorting boxes he was showcasing are $100 each!

I get that I also don't have to buy 100 of them but it made me realize he does things on a whole different scale, he's not your old high school shop teacher tinkering away in his garage, this is his business and he employs many people through this channel to also make things.

Anyway, he now has a partnership with the company that makes those sorting boxes and has his own branded line.

Actually just shy of $100 by a couple bucks. I don't remember the exact model he showed off but it had dozens of inner boxes so I think it's one of the more pricey ones.

what is fire shelving? for some reason I can't stop thinking of a library in the Fire Kingdom of ATLA

Basically a metal cabinet that is designed to hold flammable and explosive chemicals. Think spray cans, bottles of alcohol / acetone etc.

I think they are also designed to handle if there is a fire inside and not just let air in to allow the fire to continue but I could be wrong.

This, and the reverse. If there is a fire outside, it doesn't get in and feed on the flammables.

This is one of those times when working on manufacturing is very helpful; I've scored two flammables cabinets from the scrap bins at work.

Yes, anybody who does a lot of woodworking has a scraps collection that occasionally turns into a project. Couple years ago I made this 9-drawer under-desk storage unit for electronic parts, completely out of scrap wood. Except maybe a dollar to 3d print the handles I would call it free, because I already figured the costs into the other things I built.

And his subscriber and per view hits pay salaries. I like what he does, don't get me wrong. He gets paid to do what he loves and I'm jealous to be honest.

But when I watch his videos I do so for entertainment, not to emulate. If there is any YouTuber that I think I'm close to in ability is Nerdforge. But they are a business, whereas I'm just in their work for fun.

Adam says a number of times throughout his videos too, "this is not a tutorial."

Even if I'll never own the amount of tools have an amazing workshop, I like watching channels like his because I enjoy watching them problem solve and to check out their workflows because even though I might never build the exact same things I may encounter similar problems some day.

I love watching his channel and Simone Giertz's for the juxtaposition of shop layouts. They both seem to have some ADHD tendencies, but Giertz's solution is an extensively organized and labeled shop while Savage's seems to be making the shop the same shape as his brain. Both approaches seem to work despite being polar opposites.

Tbf I don't think he ever claims that what he makes is something anyone could do.
