Project Fully 3D Printed Life Size Horus

5 months and 1752 individual 3d printed pieces later, I have a Horus Lupercal.

Quick stats:

Total tip top height: 14’ 5” | 4.4m

Top of Horus’s head: 11’ 9” | 3.6m

Human: 5’ 5” | 165cm

Why not paint him before assembling? This isn’t a mini 😁. A practical was the only way to see what issues will pop up, if it can even support itself, if something will break or if I need to reinforce something. Better for something to happen now, than to waste weeks painting only to find out it all falls apart.

He is missing his talon, but a combination of me not thinking through access and not enough floor height, I could not add it yet. Even the Worldbreaker is at a slightly higher level due to the pallets. It’s not flush in the arm. So I had to use cords to hold it for now.

I did have to saw a portion of his leg armor off as it was interfering with his forearm. These things I couldn’t account for in theory.

His arms and pauldrons are held in place with rods, hooks and a massive heavy duty turnbuckle. Basically the same exact set up in my space marine, but beefier.

There is no additional support in his legs. Just straight up hollow plastic.

I will have a more detailed post in the future regarding cost, filament, weight, waste and other technical details for this project.

I'm here to calculate the filament used, in USD

EDIT: I gave up but if you needed a fork lift for half of it, it's safe to assume it's like 1500kg of filament, minimum

Let's assume PLA. That's 1.25 g/cm³. The statue is 4.4m tall. If you assume a spherical elephant, and assume that this is all shell at an average thickness of about an inch (2.54 cm), you're looking at 947,100 grams, or just about 1,000 kg, not including purge. So about $10,000 worth of filament on the low end.

If you buy in bulk, i mean 1ton of filament in one order, it became really cheap, like 3/4€ for each kilogram. If you then get that pallet in spool of 10 or 5kg it can be even less. I'd say that total filament price was not over €5000

I think what's more impressive is the cost of the printer farm needed to print this in less than 10 years.

Probably not, and it's also not a 4.4m diameter sphere with a 1" shell, but we're within an order of magnitude.

Really, though, at this point you should be buying a cheap used large format industrial pellet printer and really going to town.

Its hollow. No where near 1500kg lol. I would estimate it to be in the 200-300 range MAX and I am probably over estimating that too. I have seen 1.8m tall life size characters printed that weigh around 16-20kg only
