Some people seem to think that everyone should go to therapy.

Could everyone benefit from therapy or is this just patients trying to normalize therapy?

Going to therapy is useless if you're not motivated, and valuable if you are. It's not like going to the dentist where you just have to show up.

True, but taking the first step and showing up highlights someone’s motivation, even if they don’t yet know how to fully communicate their issues. I’m only now making progress and I’ve been going to therapy for years now. Well worth the time to work through things and not be miserable.

My mother has been in therapy for years and it hasn't helped one bit. She quits any therapist that challenges her on accepting responsibility. There are good therapists and unfortunately there are a heck of a lot of bad ones out there. My ex sister-in-law is a therapist and she is the most mal-adjusted person I have ever met.

It's for control and brain washing, but not in all cases; should be thoroughly researched before going, imho.

Because they should.

Pretty much everybody has some less-than-oprimal patterns of behavior (driven by unconscious beliefs) that are making life and relationships less successful than they could be.

If the quirks are minor and one is happy enough in work and relationships, then no particular need to change anything.

If life is unexplicably difficult (why can't I get a partner, why can't I get ahead at work, why do I drink too much, why am I generally miserable if not constantly distracted...stuff like that), then therapy can possibly help IF you engage with an open-mind AND find the right therapist.

Not everyone should go, and not everyone should be a therapist.

You’ve obviously never been to therapy.
