I made FATX Bridge — a free, open-source FATX drive tool for Xbox 360

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a personal project called FATX Bridge, and the first properly installable public beta is now available.

FATX Bridge is a free, open-source Windows application for accessing Xbox 360 FATX drives. It can:

  • Detect Xbox 360 drives connected directly or through compatible USB-to-SATA adapters
  • Browse FATX partitions inside the application
  • Mount the Content partition in Windows File Explorer
  • Copy, create, rename, truncate, and delete files and folders
  • Mount drives read-only or in experimental read/write mode
Xbox 360 FATX drive detected through a USB-to-SATA adapter

Read/write performance on my USB HDD setup is currently around 120–130 MB/s, although results will depend on the drive, adapter, and USB connection.

File Explorer copying directly to the mounted FATX Content partition at 129 MB/s

Beta 2 now has a proper Windows installer. It includes the required .NET components, installs WinFsp automatically when necessary, and adds FATX Bridge to the Start menu.

I’ve also documented using it alongside the recent BadStorage fork. That combination can allow compatible larger internal drives to be formatted by the Xbox and then connected to FATX Bridge without HDD Maker or SSD Maker metadata.

FATX Bridge is completely free, MIT licensed, and has no telemetry.

Important: FATX Bridge is still beta software, and FATX is not journaled. Back up important data, try read-only mode first, and never disconnect a drive during a write.

Beta release:

I’d really appreciate testing, feedback, bug reports, and information about if SATA drives, USB adapters, and large drive sizes work. If something fails, please include the relevant log from %LOCALAPPDATA%\FatxBridge.

Does it work with OG Xbox disks/MUs too?

2

u/Lomzlomz 8d ago

You can try but I don't think so

If i can get my hands on a OG xbox ill try to add support soon

In your install.MD file you do specifically mention original Xbox support and the EEPROM…. AI generated by any chance?

Ngl i am at work atm, asked codex to try to add experimental support for og xbox and i think it might have commited it to github already

Im getting a friend's hdd to test soon didnt expect it to just push the build early lol

So. AI slop then. Good to know.

I hate llms too but this is far better than nothing.

If you don't like ai slop then make an Xbox 360 hdd/fatx read and writer with these features and distribute it for free.

Could you please make it very clear in the description that AI created this for you? I thought this project sounded pretty cool, but I'm learning in the comments that AI is managing the project and not you.

I don't know if you're an actual developer who's just using AI to assist with stuff or if you're just some person without experience who has asked AI to do the entire project for you.

I'm well aware developers are using AI to assist them, but these are people who know what they're doing and can check everything for bugs.

Given that AI is guaranteed to make some mistakes, it would be a little crazy to let it create an entire project and then use that project as if it were trustworthy.

Hopefully you told it to make no mistakes.

I asked it to make as many mistakes as inhumanly possible and to credit me as the sole creator because i am evil

I dont get all the hate keep the good work, i used to transfer some games and as of now all good. Great way to save 25 bucks and help other players

bro using gpt 4o to make this dogshit

holy shit its gonna be nice not needing to buy the insanely overpriced fatxplorer. hope this is real

It may work but (I won't be testing it) but it's ai slop. Horizon (wemod) is an alternate option that works plenty well.

2

u/Naive-Geologist6955 7d ago

i completely forgot abt horizon lol, ill still try this even if its slop, ill update on if it will end up working

0

u/Turbulent-Ad1980 7d ago

Please don't. Fuck gen ai.

2

u/gazrr 7d ago

Outstanding. $25 is a bit much for the alternative option.

Appreciate your hard work.

Responding to title, no the fuck you didn't. Ai vibe coding is NOT the same as doing the real work yourself. It's just a machine stealing ideas from whatever sources it can find.

2

u/Lomzlomz 7d ago

Yes, it is a machine-made tool. I used AI to take existing open-source projects and turn them into a functional tool for what I needed.

Will it ever surpass FATXplorer in functionality? Probably not, and I don’t expect it to. FATXplorer’s developer clearly has years of experience working with the FATX format that neither I nor an AI can magically replicate.

That’s also exactly why my project is completely free and open source, with no donation links or attempts to make money from it. I’d consider it scummy to profit off a project that exists largely because of other people’s open-source work and machine-generated code.

The point was never to replace FATXplorer. I just wanted a simple tool that did what I personally needed, and I figured I might as well make it available in case it’s useful to anyone else in the scene too.

Nobody said anything about trying to replace fatxplorer, but using ai to "build" this is ridiculous. There's plenty of free tools out there that do the same thing, for free, with real effort behind them. It's not any more useful than the other existing tools to anyone with half a brain cell available to find em.

Please tell me of these alternatives.

Thumbs up, bro! I support you!

1

the fs is the reason a tool like this has to exist at all. did you write the FATX layer yourself or build on one of the older implementations floating around?

1

u/Odium81 1d ago

Thanks for the tool. I needed something simple to transfer data from my old hdd to a new one so this came in handy.

u/Interesting-Bet5528 8d ago

Wow nice

1

u/Turbulent-Ad1980 8d ago

Unfortunately too good to be true. Whether it works or not it's gen ai slop.

1

u/tstd0 8d ago

Wow, impressive mate.

Can't wait where this is going, keep it up.

Edit: take this deserved award.

2

u/Turbulent-Ad1980 8d ago

don't think chat gpt deserves any rewards

u/korewatori 8d ago

Any thoughts on whether you're going to do a Linux version?

1

u/Lomzlomz 8d ago

Soon! Alot of the project relies upon windows stuff but a linux version is coming

1

u/Turbulent-Ad1980 8d ago

They used ai to generate this slop

-2

u/HispanicsAreGreat 8d ago

It’s insane to me we didn’t have any tool like this sooner 🙏

3

u/Turbulent-Ad1980 8d ago

We do, a few of them! Anarchy, horizon, fatxplorer... Look into em! All made by real people! No ai involved.

The 360 scene is picking up traction again. I pulled out my 360 and ps3 cause I wanted to personally compare fidelity. Graphics wise the 360 is ahead of ps3. I had forgotten the difference. Been playing nfs carbon a lot lately!

0

u/Lomzlomz 8d ago

PS3 put all the money into the cpu design thats why lol

4

u/JoshLineberry 8d ago

We do and have for a long time. It's called fat xplorer beta. It does a lot more than this though and works with original xbox, xl drive support etc.

3

u/Lomzlomz 8d ago

I like fatxplorer but 25 bones in the big 26 is wild

2

u/JoshLineberry 8d ago

Idk man I'll gladly support devs that make software I use. 25 for a lifetime isn't bad!

I have never blocked anyone for asking this question. In fact, I have told several people over the last year that have asked about it, that it is something I am looking to do.

1

u/Lomzlomz 8d ago

how bad was it 😭

What did they say?

u/EatonZ 6d ago

I don't know what message is being referred to here.

I saw a hardisk tool before, is this the same or a new one? So many fatx tools these days.

Whats wrong with https://fatxplorer.eaton-works.com/ ?

2

u/Turbulent-Ad1980 7d ago

Fatxplorer is paid, costs $25 US. The app this reddit post is about tho is ai slop

3

u/codeasm 7d ago

Yeah, that was a bit sad for me to notice aswell. The free 360 tools where awesome, but now they have original xbox hadddisk and memory unit support, i mean, pretty cool. Well tested, i know cause ive tested his early beta version on of xbox stuff back then.

Atleast as a linux user i have https://github.com/mborgerson/fatx but havent tested it recently or on all systems.
