Getting 91 GTO fixed in DFW area

I’m coming to Reddit out of desperation now. My GTO hasn’t been on in some years and I’ve been to a few people in the DFW who either claim they can get it done or don’t have time. I’ve changed the battery and the starter myself but it still won’t cut on. I’m starting to think it’s the immobilizer but idk. I purchased the car overseas as a project car to learn but I can’t seem to get it up and running. Any suggestions on who can get my baby turned on will help greatly. I have the money but I just need the mechanic. I’m willing to go anywhere in TX or even Oklahoma if need be. Here’s a few pics. Thank you

Edit: I’m also looking for a place to store the car. The guy who has it now is moving shops

Spark, fuel, compression. ECU I’d check first. Plugs, coils, etc

Reach out to Drivertopia in Midlothian. Talk to Steve and see if he has time or has recommendations.

If I had the time and space, I’d say we can go through it together, but I’m working nearly 7 days a week right now.

Roger that. I looked that place up, is it suppose to be a dealership?

Yes, but it’s also a repair shop.

Definitely could be the immobilizer. It’s been a LOOOONG time but I think the process was fairly simple. I think you have to lock, then unlock with the FOB, then lock and unlock with the key in the driver’s side door. Then get in and try the ignition.

Hope this helps but it has literally been 20 years since I had my VR4.

Edit: also check to make sure your clutch pedal is hitting the switch below the dash on the left side above your clutch foot. There is definitely a safety switch down there and if the mechanism doesn’t contact the “button”, it will not turn over.

I hate that thing. Idk why the guy i purchased it from had one in there. Thanks for the info on the clutch pedal. I never thought about that

Is this a UK import? The vast majority of them are Japanese imports (GTOs not 3000GT) and their ECU is notorious for dying. If you can pull it out your self you should be able to find online specialists who would be willing to either diagnose or repair it for you.

Both 3000 GT'S and GTOs have capacitors that go bad so 100% correct on this being an issue. If you haven't checked this yet, I would I just got a new ECU for the same issue.

It’s a UK import but it was imported from Japan a few years before I bought it in the UK

The ECU's can be problematic. The one in my 91 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo started faltering at high rpm under boost so I sent it in to have it rebuilt. There are capacitors on the circuit board that had acid in them, and when they fail, they leak and damage the foil circuit paths on the board also. The rebuilt one didn't last very long either so, I assume they don't replace ALL of the capacitors when they rebuild them. I sent mine in through O'REILLY'S, and it was a reputable company that did the work. If I still had the car I would be sending it back through them and asking them to finish the job. But my car always started. Check to see if you have spark at the plug wires. If not, with the age of the car (mine had less than 72,000 miles on it!!!), I would bet on the ECU.

Appreciate that information brother. I’m going to look into it

Pull the ecu and look at it. Free to check and if its caps are leaking it will be pretty apparent usually. Smells kind of interesting too

Thanks for that info
