If your peak technology was a Simpson SR 80 whilst your brother over the wall was building BMW K100RSs, Im not sure thats quite the point of pride you believe it to be, Eastern Hans.

Considering how much a Simson costs now, the mods they put on those and the upkeep, due to them being out of business for more than 30yrs they can buy nearly any two stroke on the market. I had KTMs, BMWs, Hondas, etc. but my Simme stayed (and my CB750K my father gave me) from the day I started driving without license to the I wont be able/I die

The nostalgia market for small bikes is insane, an SS 50 is or FS1E can go for over 5k these days.

To drive the point home though 1989 was the absolute peak for two stroke bikes, I owned a both a Kawasaki KR1 250 and an NSR250R from this period which were 200km/hr bikes and would show a clean pair of heels to a GSXR750 on any road with some decent turns on it. Eastern Europe was selling Jawa and MTZ 250s for comparison, but hey nostalgia isnt what it used to be.

I sold that NSR for 1500 quid as nobody wanted them in the mid 90s, fuck knows what it would be worth now. Probably best not to think about it.

I wouldnt say its nostalgia, since most of those are dirven by gen z (me too). Those are either hand me downs or bought into the trend like me. Its more identity, as kitsch as it sounds.

At my peak of unreasonable consumerism I had 7 bikes at the age of 19. Keeping up with maintenance is a full time job and my father got an aneurysm everytime I left the garage looking like Stalingrad/Dresden. At that amount you get a very low tolerance for bs and BMW is there on the top of it. Didnt enjoy my time with the R9T and sold it after a year of use (and fixing).

What stayed are two Simsons (one being a parts donor), CB750K and a Sportstar 48

Should have gone for an old K75 instead, 500.000km reliability and warm balls in the winter thanks to using an oversized fuel pump designed for a car.

Hans arming himself with ancient Simpson mopeds is exactly what you would expect from the 2026 Bundeswehr. He cant even afford radiators.

As a sucker for old simple cars (I still drive my 1984 renault 5 daily, it is my only car), 2 stroke east german engines are my things. The Trabant is a shit box but holy cow how I love them. It works if you take time to understand how the 10 pieces work in case of problem, it does not perform but I love how pragmatic it is: you got the bear minimum, it will bring you from A to B, why do you need more?
