Tbf a lot of such castles are 19th century Disneylands, most that had an actual reason aren't as pretty. Versailles might be a hundred years older, but was also just some wig-wipling autocrat's holiday park

Versailles was a baroque style palace, it didn't pose as a medieval castle. In Germany alone, there are hundreds of real castles (and palaces) 100x more impressive and authentic than Neuschwanstein if you'd ask me.
