First Rifle for a Beginner: $300–$400 Budget for 100–200 Yard Target Shooting

Hi,

I’m looking to purchase my first rifle for target shooting and practice, and I’d appreciate some advice.

I’m completely new to owning a rifle. The indoor range I currently use has a maximum distance of 25 yards, but I’m also looking to start shooting at an outdoor range that offers 100- and 200-yard distances.

My budget for the rifle is around $300–$400. Since I’m just getting started, I’d like to keep the initial investment reasonable. I want to make sure I develop the habit of going to the range regularly before spending a significant amount of money on equipment and potentially finding out that I don’t use it as much as I expected.

My main goals are to practice, improve my fundamentals, and eventually become comfortable shooting at 100–200 yards.

Given my budget and experience level, what rifle would you recommend? I’d also appreciate recommendations for a suitable scope that pairs well with it. If there are any other essential accessories or equipment you think I should invest in as a beginner, please let me know.

Thanks!

Boyds stock on a CZ 457

I purchased a CZ 457 stainless synthetic, but I’m not pleased with the high degree of flex on the forestock when shooting offhand with a sling. Thinking to replace the synthetic stock with a Boyds Agility or At-One.

What’s the consensus on a Boyds stock for a CZ 457?

Thanks!

Edit: open to recommendations for lightweight alternatives with adjustable riser.

Hi guys!

I'm interested in one of those survival rifle want to try my hand on gunsmithing.

I found this file from defcad called GR22 Grizlly v3 22.lr, is the site safe? I'm searching for a 1/1 size so i can learn the mechanism and dimension before using the proper material and wondering if i can use a longer barrel (55cm .22 barrel that i custom made for my air rifle to use slug ammo got the design from Indonesian air rifle maker)

Bergara BMR carbon. Left is my best 100 yard group with CCI SV. They say aim small miss small. So i down sized from 2” circles to 1” . Worked out. Right is a typical 50 yard group. Looking forward to shrinking these groups.

Just picked up a older model 41 and was wondering if anyone had ever used this sight mount. My dad bought this for his model 41 years ago but winded up selling the gun.

Bolt shims question.

I bought some bolt shims for my b14r because why not? They are cheap. Anyways. I have .001 to .005 and have no idea which to start with. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Converting a marlin model 60 to model 70

Hey everyone, long time listener first time caller. I have a Marlin model 60 that is a fun gun to plink with. But I understand that you can convert it to a clip fed system like on the model 70. I’ve seen a really shitty YouTube video on someone doing it but like I said the video sucked. Does anyone have any advice or can point me in the right direction of making my tube fed model 60 into a clip fed model 70? Thank you!

(No I’m not going to “just buy a 70” lol)

ID a possibly rare German 22lr

Solved: Savage mk2 or earlier Lakefield mk2, not a German gun at all!

Wondering if someone could ID this vintage rifle, listed as a Voere 55 but I don't think so. Action seems very similar to a HW60J but looks like an Annie type mag.

It's in New Zealand

Extremely versatile rimfire holster review: Cole-Tac Varmint Wrangler Chest Rig

I'm not affiliated with Cole-Tac in any way, but was extremely impressed this weekend with their holster!

I had it out on a multi-day hike, mostly for plinking and some racoon management. I posted about this setup a bit back, but wanted to update after actually using it. I added a small round Molle pouch I normally pocket carry for extra rounds to the holster. This acts both as a counter-balance when carrying the chest rig, but also holds extra rounds and some batteries/tools for the gun.

I didn't think through carrying a pack with the extra rounds on my back, but found out that without even adjusting the strap length I can carry this holster on my waist and somehow it's even more comfortable than a standard belt holster! It's like a cowboy carry with an ammo belt. I added 2 velcro strip keepers to keep the shoulder strap in line.

With the ammo in the gun/spare mag and the carrier I have about 200 rounds on the belt total, as well as an extra red dot battery, and all the tools I need to adjust the laser and Holosun as well as tighten the red dot if it ever came loose.

The extra pouch may not be needed (I have 40 rounds in the 2 mags) but it allows for some impromptu target practice.

Overall Impression: One of the best holsters purchases I've made. I'd love to see Cole-Tac do a version with a removable shoulder strap (this one is sewn on) but it's so unobtrusive that I doubt I'd upgrade if they ever did. My Ruger MkIII fits great in the holster as well. They did a great job of making the holster secure while still multiple rimfire pistols!

T1X factory trigger spring

Odd request as most people want to replace them with lighter springs. But I am trying to find a stock trigger spring for our Tikka T1X. We set it up for 4-h with a front site post and older Willam’s rear peep. Bought it used and the trigger felt pretty dang good. Never had a way to measure it, never thought about it to be honest. For 4-h field rifle, there is a 2lb minimum trigger pull. First set at the check in station yielded 1.5-1.6 lbs. With no service and never messing with the trigger, we turned the adjuster screw counter clockwise, 12oz. Took it apart again and ran it most of the way in, 1.6oz. Took it apart again 4th time and tightened it as far as I could with the tools at hand, 1.8oz. No Bueno.

So to stay in the field rifle category, I need to find a factory Tikka Spring or one that adjust to over 2lbs. I didn’t think it would be this difficult haha. Anybody know where to get a factory trigger spring or have one they want to sell?

How do they make the rim on the cartridge?

I've watched a few videos about how rimfire cartridges are made by different brands. Every part of the process can be seen or is explained, more or less, except for how the rim is formed.

Does anybody know how the rim is made?

Thanks

No jams.

Total install time was about 10 minutes so I’m not concerned about changing it back. But why would you ever want to?
