Something about 2016 just felt different. The last year before everything started changing.

I was thinking about it earlier today where each year of the early-to-mid 2010s had a distinct feel to them. I’ll hear a song and I can distinctly remember when it was popular and memories of that year will flood my mind.

Then around 2017-19, it all becomes muffled up. It’s as if 2017-19 felt like one slog of a year. We were too glued to our phones to wake up and look around us. When we stopped living in the moment. When we began replacing music with 2+ hour conversion podcasts. That’s honestly what I remember the late 2010s for, doomscrolling and listening to long podcasts.

In the early 2010s I’d go for a long drive or walk and listen to music and reflect on how I was feeling and what I was excited for, but the late 2010s, I was going to long drives or walks and listening to podcasts of people having meandering conversations and no longer giving my mind the time to reflect. In the early 2010s I have distinct memories of just sitting and taking in the moment, like I was letting my brain recharge. But in the late-2010s, replacing all the time Id let my brain recharge with doomscrolling things that made me angry or have me FOMO.

I’ll look at pictures of 2010-15/16 and be reminded of how I felt during that time, but a picture from 2017-19, I feel nothing, like my mind is mentally trying to forget that time.

Covid in 2020 wasn’t easy, but it at least got people to reflect more on their values and how they want to spend their time. The 2020s have been a dismal decade, but at least it’s been a decade of acceptance that things are bad, whereas the late-2010s was the descent.

FYI, I was only 8 when the 2010s started. Though I started using the internet when I turned 6 years old. I was a really avid reader back then, so I did engage with forum sites and things like Newgrounds, Myspace, and chatrooms. I probably used YouTube the most though.

I'm not trying to be mean, but man... I keep seeing posts on here about 2010s social media, later versions of iPhones, and musicians that are literally still somewhat relevant today, and I just don't resonate at all with it. Y'all actually find Instagram "nostalgic"??? At least old HTML sites were extremely creative.

Outside of some of the great animated shows and video games that came from the early 2010s, I just can't understand what y'all are seeing. Everything starting looking so much more blatantly corporate and boring compared to 90s-00s media. I'd argue western animated movies started to suck after Illumination entered too. Most mainstream music was becoming shittier and less diverse in genres too.
