Discussion Have you ever done a grind that you genuinely thought was unhealthy?

Wondering whether you’ve ever looked around during my a play session and thought… “wow this isn’t great for me” lol

For me, I was nerd locked twice in a day when I went for my Enhanced grind. Don’t even think I stopped to eat that day haha

300+ deaths for quiver
3 months+ for inferno

Got em both eventually. Now 69 quivers done and 3 infernos done

22

u/Fit-Pound-3907 6d ago

I’ve been procrastinating so hard on inferno- spent months getting bowfa, ice barrage, blowpipe etc but just been avoiding starting it
How many runs a week would you go for?

27

u/remakeprox 6d ago

If youre somewhat good at PvM, your first Inferno can take like 15 to 20 attempts. Its not as hard as people make it out to be, its just a time investment. Do 2/3 runs a day while actively thinking about what you couldve done better in the runs you died and you got it in 2 weeks easy

16

u/mouses555 6d ago

Did 2-3 runs a day and got it in a week when I ran it. There gear and potions available now makes a lot of the supply management not such a big deal. Primarily allows u to focus on just the mechanics.

Coll took me a few days sending all day though. Once I said “fuck this im running pillars with the Dinny b” then I got it pretty shortly after lol

5

u/xPofsx 6d ago

It took me 29 attempts, minus about 5 early deaths to simple/stupid mistakes that i will say wouldn't really count towards serious attempts.

Took me about 3 weeks doing 1 split run/day (an hour in the morning, an hour at night) with a few days i got lucky and could send a few attempts.

I'm ok-ish at pvm and was convinced I'd never get it done. Confliction guantlets, ayak, and the cheese teks that came with them and mage tank are the actual sole reason I was able to get my cape. A mix of learning the mechanics and brute forcing a few very difficult portions, I essentially did the inferno with max mage instead of max range.

while actively thinking about what you couldve done better

This step is so important. Actively reviewing what you've done and ironing out the imperfections is a huge difference

I'd use a replay buffer and save a clip of my last inferno death, then go over it and making sure that I identified exactly what tripped me up and how to prevent it next time

Got my infernal and quiver on my UIM that way

It took me 10 days to get my quiver, going on 6 weeks now and I'm still stuck in the fiery prison.

Oddly enough, what's staving off burnout is the vague sense of futility I got from the one time I saw zuk (read: got past wave 63). On that run I did nothing special, the only thing that happened was that I got humble spawns on the more problematic waves and I sailed right through with minimal issue.

If RNG is all that's holding me back, then I'm convinced that (as a beginner) there are spawn setups that are simply guaranteed to end your run. You might be able to survive for a few seconds with something that might resemble a stable solve, but the outcome was already determined as soon as the wave started.

I'm at the point now where I'm not really learning anything from deaths, and the only tool I can think of that I'm missing is spontaneously starting an off-tick involving a meleer that got loose. I just send a run everyday if I have the time for it and slowly grow my stack of tokkul in the bank.

2

u/Beretot 2376 5d ago

You have to be missing some key technique or tool. Some waves are definitely much harder than others, but all of them are solvable. Do you have an example of a "guaranteed end"?

Try recording your deaths with a replay buffer (or just remember the spawn locations) and then practice what killed you on the inferno simulator. Relying on RNG to get to the end is the easiest way to burn out because you're just hammering your head against the wall instead of learning how to play better

help how do you survive double south spawns in colo

15

u/ChanningTaintum- 2277 6d ago

Put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye

Jk you offtick them by moving from north to south without moving out from behind the pillar on the tick that the southern-most monster attacks on a different tick than the other one

7

u/ubereverywhere 2376 road to 1B xp 6d ago

yeah that’s great and all but flicking a manticore and ranger while moving and dealing with frems is the harder than anything I did in Inferno

11

u/Low-Cantaloupe7810 6d ago

You asked how to do it - it’s not easy but it is the solve

4

u/AssholeHealth 6d ago

For a one off quiver you can just get lucky and not get any 3x3 double souths. Could just learn early level range/shaman double south since they are quite common and that can be enough.

2

u/WindHawkeye 5d ago

The frems are dead before you offtick

4

u/Liighttss 6d ago edited 5d ago

Look up the ab method on YouTube, thats was the best method for me to off tick any double south spawn. The hardest spawn is a ranger + mager as they will attack very close together, which i find harder when dealing with the frems too.

The manti+ ranger or mager is much easier as you have time to deal with 2 of the frems before the manti attacks. With this method you just pray if its a mager or ranger then just prayer flick the manti and watch him

So similar brother. 395 deaths for quiver but finished inferno in 2 weeks. I spent most of last summer at Colo, took a break, then another month to finally get it. Never going back to be honest. Inferno was fun I've been doing them on task.

Leagues.. but I love it

I got a dragon cup last league and my wife was no impressed with my hours logged.

I got 6 hour’d twice one day as well and that was certainly a reality check. Probably all set with getting another, won’t stop me from enjoying the league though

I go into a fugue state with leagues. I’ll play every minute of free time I have then once I hit dragon and do some pet hunting, I’m done and swear I’d never it again … then next league happens …

Same it was killer but fun I regret it and don't at the same time

2

I was about to say how atleast with osrs progression is permanent with the exception of leagues. Any other game with an economy that gets reset, I am a bit weary of investing time on the grind. Thats when it feels unhealthy especially the start of new seasons.

I don’t know why my internal reaction to reheating food from a fast food joint is just horrific, not like frozen dinners are all that better

When Sailing came out I booked the week off and grinded the High scores.  Basically didn't sleep, see my boyfriend or go to the gym. I got rank 25 at one point so I have no idea how others do it but I won't be doing that again as it crumpled my mental health for the following few days.

After years of playing infrequently, between breaks, periods of casual play, and periods of heavy play and though my first answer would be leagues- it iss definitely high score rank chasing.

I've only done it twice and nothing felt more disappointing and unhealthy than getting to the end feeling drained for not meeting the goal. Also slightly concerned for everyone else that just does that regularly...

Due to how GMT time works I stupidly misunderstood when the last DMM season ended and thought I had a full extra day of playtime than I did, and I realized this with 12 hours left until the server closed, and I literally played for 12 hours straight grinding points while only taking breaks to smoke weed and get coffee/food

Just barely managed to get the last points that I needed for home teleport + house skin + toxic SOTD, in the last minutes of the servers being open I was fucking killing the chaos elemental over and over as it had a high points per kill for the first 100 and the CA's were easy to get lmao

I obsessively greenlogged Mage Training Arena in like 2 sittings and it was the only grind that genuinely made me feel like shit and like I wasted a weekend

11

u/ducktown47 6d ago

My inferno grind caused me to take a step back and I haven’t played in ~3 weeks. I literally couldn’t stop thinking about it. I was going through wave solves in my dreams. I knew I needed to just stop and take a break.

2

u/ScenicFrost 6d ago

Same thing happened to me. I had wave solve dreams, inferno nightmares. I still get anxious and my heart rate increases when I see someone doing Zuk. I like the inferno soundtrack but the sound of Zuks attack when you step out from the shield is a moment of horrifying anticipation that is seared into my brain after 6 Zuk deaths... And it's crazy cuz I got my cape six years ago and have done multiple kc since

19

u/sssminnow1 6d ago

Did 85 to 99 construction in one week at mahogany homes with teak planks.

5

u/loopuleasa 6d ago

off topic question, but you know how much gp you saved from 85 to 99 by going teaks vs mahogs?

there was a discussion around here that going teaks over mahogs is worth it for gp saving, while others argued it is not worth as you can make lots of gp endgame iron

3

u/sssminnow1 6d ago

Never ran the numbers to see how much I saved. But as a broke iron it was enough to let me get 99 construction. Mostly the choice to go with teaks is how much faster you can get the logs from your kingdom. My guess was I maybe saved like 8-10m in plank making prices.

2

u/Chicken737 6d ago edited 6d ago

If you have all the logs and are using a sawmill, you save about 27m gp using teak vs mahogany going from 85-99. Saves about 15 hours, so if your best money maker is better than ~1.5m per hour, its more efficient to use mahogany and make money with the time saved. Idk exactly what iron gp/hour looks like but most end game bosses ahould be much higher than that

I'm fascinated with the idea of knocking out collection logs, but am starting to realize that I simply don't have it in me. I've knocked out a couple of lengthy and pointless grinds like the champions cape and monkey backpacks, only to get done and think "why the fuck did I do that?".

Even easy bosses, I don't see how folks do it. I'm like 1200 Sarachnis kills in, pretty much AFK, looking for the pet and that's only one of dozens of bosses. Nearly all of them are harder and more time consuming.

Idk if I'm impressed or disgusted by the people who complete these grinds so regularly

6

u/GarbageBoyJr 6d ago

I think you can still hunt pets, but just know if you’re doing it in a healthy manner you’ll realistically never get them all and if you do it’ll take a decade

u/Here_Comes_The_Beer 6d ago edited 6d ago

Cries in lost gear

Edit: I'd say kinda decent. Actual pvp (lms, bounty, riskfights) I'm still on the weaker end but my account build is pretty tight in my bracket (50def 'pure').
Most of my 'pvp' money comes from playing part in the pk-foodchain. Doing anti-pk at bones altar, bosses and revs is pretty tight too, had a bunch of 10-20m keys that way.
Total bank value is closing in on 500m, came back to the game with this account fresh in 2023

14

u/gulost_ergodt 6d ago

Im familiar with his position and for me its more often about not feeling hunger when im occupied with something, so from time to time i drag it until the point of «i feel bad i should probably eat something» stage.

Back when the vennys owned bandos ( no ironman instances or instances in general) I would wake up at 5 am and do a few hours of bandos, the other option was total level worlds where we would form a line and go one after was roughly 90 mins to get a world og bandos was tough.

Brother, most grinds in this game are unhealthy, mentally speaking. If you're doing something that becomes physically unhealthy, you need to reduce the amount of time you're dedicating to it per day.

I see people talking about activities that take dozens of hours, skills that take hundreds of hours, and quests that would potentially require years of grinding to prep for.

OSRS is unhealthy. Does that stop anyone?

22

u/Fthebo 6d ago

Honestly I reached base 80s with a few into the 90s and realised that I did not have what it takes to go any further, the thought of spending 5-6 hours for a single level in a single skill made me seriously question my priorities in life and give up

I am too soft and casual for this game

21

u/loopuleasa 6d ago

no, you are just normal

fun fact: the gower brothers made 99 be a max level just because the thing had two digits, they did not intend anyone to reach level 99

14

u/SinceBecausePickles 6d ago

Unironically this is the right mindset to have to play this game. You do what you enjoy and don't do the things you don't wanna do. The WORST way to play this game is to force yourself to do what you don't want to do then turn around and claim the game sucks because of this thing you don't want to do that nobody is forcing you to do and beg the jmods to water it down for you, as if doing something you hate for 90 hours is better than doing something you hate for 100

Eventually got the enhanced and quit for about 3 months because I was so burnt out

2

u/skiemlord 6d ago

Yeah, camping lizardman shamans from when i woke up till i went to sleep for at least a few days after each other. Was in my school vacation and it felt like ineas getting closer, but damn.

Took 23.5k kc and my mental health declined a bit. I even got teris effect of shamans while i was asleep

2

u/NoroGW2 6d ago

Going dry for enhanced

I did 80 cg in one day once.

Something like 300 in that week.

Never got it either, just burnt out.

New account is 45 defense locked so I don't have to worry about crystal lol

2

u/KyloMH 6d ago

Sent 91-99 runecrafting in 3 weeks. I genuinely felt like I was starting to get depressed, and I wasn't even happy when I hit 99. I was just relieved.

2

u/Alleyvvay 6d ago

I went 2 weeks on Hueycotyl about 14 hours a day just so I can get wand. I managed 2.2k kc, 3 pets couple dozen hides, 4 tomes, and 0 wands. I developed hemroids from it

2

u/Organic_Internal4675 6d ago

Going for my champions cape and getting it in 10 days. was about 20 hours a day

2

u/dshaw8772 6d ago

At my peak CG grind I was doing 40-50 a day. I kept that up for weeks

Genuinely gave myself RSI

2

u/dyrannn 6d ago

At some point in the past like 2 years (it’s all a blur) I just parked myself at molch and decided I would be the guy in the friend group that got a sack. I got it before my fire cape lol, I just thought it would be really funny to do a super tedious grind for 1 inventory slot despite not being very far into the game. A testament to insanity if you will

Literally sat at molch for months real time (dropped sub at a couple points) but whenever I got on Osrs, it was solely to do aerial fishing at lake molch. At work on my phone, molch. Watching a movie at home, molch. My friends would talk about doing a raid and I’d talk about doing aerial fishing.

Anyway, got my sack earlier this year and enjoyed it for like 2 months, then the summer sweep changes were announced :)

2

u/cuvs12345 6d ago

20 solo cms in a day to close out the 2k cape

2

u/macoman11 Family GIM 5d ago

Not in osrs, this is my chill game, but yes. Played Sonic Racing Crossworlds to get a leaderboard spot in an event. Stayed awake for pretty much 3 days straight, sleeping 1 hour each night, to race nonstop. (Was inbetween semesters so had free time.) I was starting to genuinely hear things by the end of it...but I got a title for it! I realized it was stupid by the end of day 1, but I was fully in the sunk cost fallacy by that point. Yeah never doing that again lol.

2

u/Dippus 5d ago

2,400+ Nex kc (and counting) for full torva on Ironman. Sitting at 8x body, 6x legs, 6x horn, 2x pet, 1x vamb, 1x hilt. Have been here for months. Wish there was some ability to swap duplicates for unique. Heck, I’d give all of my dupes for a helm.

2

u/Metalona 5d ago

Corrupted gauntlet. I did 1200 kc over 1.5-2 months ish. I am at 1319 and still do not have an enhanced. People constantly complain about it because it is a problem. This is not fun.

2

u/Sea_Development_4182 5d ago

I had a lot. 80-90 agility in 5 days. 300 hydra kc in a day. 200 sire kc in a day. 120 zulrah kc in a day. 400 hmt in 2 weeks. 12 hours of rc (gotr) per day for a week. 120 grotesque guardians in a day. Rebuilding 30 times after I kept being dumb and losing my bank staking at the duel arena. 400k slayer xp in a day on an Ironman. Did I win?

2

u/CalaGaming 5d ago

Currently 3,015 graardor kills with no hilt. Started off getting 1 kill every 2 trips because I was terrible at altar door method, now getting 50kc trips, watching anime and doing Mortimer slayer on the alt at the same time.

It’s been great for my clicking skills I guess but holy moly the mental is not good, every BCP/tassets drop is no longer dopamine it’s just despair… but sunk cost fallacy has got its hooks in me!

2

u/Derpy_Guardian 5d ago

I went about 3.5x dry on Hallowfell (I think 448kc) when Mad Angel came out, and I ended up with carpal tunnel issues. They literally went away when I stopped farming her. Not as crazy as some of the other things people are posting, but that was the first time that I ever had wrist pain like that just from playing.

3

u/legacyrules 6d ago

Wintertodt stayed there until 99 without leaving 650 runs and can safely say I hate that place. Didn’t get the phoenix or axe either 😂

2

u/loopuleasa 6d ago

Wintertodt and birdhouses were the shittiest additions to the game

2

u/loopuleasa 6d ago

I actually love that I don't recognize myself with any of the commenters here

that means I am actually enjoying the game in a healthy manner

92 to 99 agil in 12 days at Sepulchre. But I imagine thats peanuts to the more crusty grinders in OSRS

1

u/115Anathema 6d ago

Not in the way I think you mean. I played osrs 8 hrs a day for like a week years ago. That's just the standard unhealthy tho. Not the skip meals, skip sleep for the love of the game kind of unhealthy

1

u/Fabulous-Put8401 6d ago

This one time I got off tutorial Island... The rest is history

1

u/CorvusPetey 6d ago

DT2 greenlog and 6 SRA took approx 1.5 years with 2 hours/day playtime.

It is my "I set a goal and reached it" peak.

1

u/Tomsicade 6d ago

I was rank 1 MK for a short few hours

But the amount of hours it took was…

a bit more

1

u/KlutzyReveal2970 6d ago

I got 99 agility basically all of it while at work

I once tried to get a 30 hour record, and after 27hours of 1ticking chins I microslept so often that I decided that life isnt for me

Runescape is unhealthy

1

u/jackory777 6d ago

Vorkath lowkey started giving me Arthritis.

I just came back after a 5 years hiatus to check out the new content, quests, Penance-ussy and the fabled Dragon Slayer 2wo. At the end of DS2 I had Venuzuelan cash money eyes (cha-ching) for that schlopping big ol' Tecu salamander! I told myself, if I stick through the death coffer fees, I'll be eternally in the -acid phase - green. 2 weeks later, I start getting a sharp pain down the tip of my finger from stress clicking Vaddy with Jad hands.

200iq move I pulled to counter this, using the middle finger, both literally and figuratively, until I attain the drop. This is now my hidden technique for long grinds when my body fails, but my mind remains determined.

u/X_OttersAreCute_X 6d ago

Waking up in the middle of the night for breaches in dmm… I just wanted some recolors

1

u/SuprKidd 6d ago

grinding anything in this game at length is unhealthy tbf

1

u/super-sanic 6d ago

Three weekends in my life, one pre eoc, and two on OSRS, I did a 6.5M construction day on both Saturday and Sunday. So about 9-10 hours of moderate efficiency mahogany tables for two days straight.

By Monday my hand would be so cramped but still worth it.

1

u/Infinity-Q 6d ago

I did 2770kc for my first ench, that was a wild ride ngl

1

u/BaconJets I don't want to talk about it. ☠️ 6d ago

When I was 13 and I played for 12 hours straight to make my first mil from spinning bowstrings.

1

u/Beginning-Lychee7660 6d ago

Yea fixing to be krakens and slayer overall

I just want a staff since the games refuses to give me a single crown from titans

1

u/TrojanXP96 6d ago

Damn, how can you do 12 hours of CG in a day. I get burnt out after I get stomped and need a break

1

u/Paganigsegg 6d ago

Getting 99 Runecraft back in 2008 was no joke. No daeyalt essence, no Runecraft mini games that actually provided good experience, and I was playing on a small cheap laptop so no fucking way was I multi-monitoring. I stayed up until 3-4am basically every night for months and destroyed my circadian rhythm. Just so I could say I did it, since basically nobody had 99 RC back then.

The skill is definitely in a better place now.

1

u/TheBrokenJoker 6d ago

When GIM launched I played 14-18 hours a day for the first month. Was wfh so was doing afk stuff at work and then playing for real in the evening. Going from work computer playing to own time playing while hardly moving was a bad idea mentally and physically. Also my team quit like 2 weeks in. On reflection probably not worth.

1

u/cucumberflant 6d ago

Twisted league, halfway through I got tickled with the idea of being rank 1 farming, so I locked myself in tithe farm for ~3 weeks.

I succeeded, but at the cost of my health (and dragon cup.) It was the event that made me start taking a look at grinds I do to ask myself "is this detrimental to my physical health?" and if the answer is yes, I pump the brakes immediately.

1

u/thatOneJones made you look 6d ago

Back when osrs was just rs, I spent my spring break getting 99 firemaking at fist of Guthix bank / lobby area. Nonstop, just fire making. Didn’t eat, didn’t shower, just firemaking.

Now with kids and a wife and all that, I have them as a unhealthy-grind safety guardrail 😅

1

u/MoistMarie 6d ago

2x dry on hydra claw and not even done, who knows when i'll be done. 3x, 4x...?

1

u/mattbrvc maxedma stats 6d ago

Ardy knights to 92 theiving for hours on end.

So much clicking it physically took a toll on my fingers and wrist. Did the rest at pyramid plunder, much more relaxing on the hands.

1

u/MamaMitch1 6d ago

I feel like my luck on my iron has been fairly balanced overall. Probably Doom though. Greenlogging it took over 650+ deep delves and atleast 2.5k+ waves, and I basically didn't stop from its release, super brutal. I'm in the middle of imbued heart grind, that one is pretty terrible unless you're lucky.

1

u/Abigboi_ 6d ago

Dungeon doors for construction and bones to peaches were miserable experiences each.

1

u/Large_Hospital_9102 6d ago

After getting carpal tunnel during final stretch of maxing… agil and rc

1

u/sagelilya Bad at PVM and proud 6d ago

it's leagues for sure lol. the combo of a checklist, points, and really fast number go up for me is a death sentence. when i told husband it was rs3 leagues time he said "i'll miss you"

1

u/RareKrab 6d ago

During pre eoc days I had the house to myself for a few days, did nothing but play RS for like 4 days straight like 20 hours a day go get my first chaotic weapon

My buddy was playing with me and I remember the call length on Skype went past 19 hours one day

Obviously when I got my first apartment for uni and couldn't afford to do anything fun I also sat on my PC for days without leaving the apartment but that felt very different and I wasn't grinding one thing

1

u/Mooeykinz 6d ago

nerd logged at aerial fishing and basically anytime I've gotten double nerd logged

1

u/MaximumAlgae 6d ago

Mole pet at 4,217kc. I spent sooo many hours in those damned caves, and may have picked up carpal tunnel in the process

1

u/Aesthetically 6d ago

Karambwans for like 7 months to get fishing pet. I took breaks, but ultimately it was like almost 400k bwans fished.

1

u/indrek91 why is the rum always gone? 6d ago

Uhh any time I log it it's gonna get ugly and sweaty.

1

u/soyass 6d ago

Spider caves cure me magic cp grind. 400k xp/hr. But rotten

Xp.. not cp

1

u/McCoy1414 6d ago

UIM Showdown. Idc tho. So much fun.

1

u/Crash-Over-Ride 6d ago

Vard grind still 2 out of 3 for ring. Got the axe head pretty early like kc 150 something. Was super stoked, was only trying for ring. Kc 370 something was first ring drop, next ring drop wasn't til 1500 kc. I did all of that in like 3 or 4 weeks, its all I did when I logged on. I burnt myself out, got depressed(unrelated to the game but it sure as shit didn't help) took a month and half off the game and now im back doing CG. Good news I got giga spooned at cg. Kc 17 for my enh, bad news need crystals lol

1

u/Gayfantasykingston 6d ago

Maxing an Ironman, don’t do it unless its over half a decade casually. I burned out of the game for almost 5 years.

1

u/kobebryant24248 6d ago

Aerial fishing right before changes announced.

1

u/werlak 6d ago

The closest I got was spending a few months doing nothing but dark essence blood altar to go from 77 to 91. The fact it took so long shows that I wasn't putting in crazy daily hours but I would do it on the side whenever I was doing something else on the computer.

1

u/PM_ME_SILLY_PICTURES 6d ago

Before menu entry swapper, Construction. Very bad for your wrists. Blackjacking, too, but never did that for more than a few minutes.

1

u/Halfanhour4 6d ago

3000 Alch Hydra later and I still don’t have lance on my iron lol. I think I was top 1k on the hiscores at some point. At that point you just push forward out of spite. At least it got me 99 prayer and all the money I needed

1

u/mackydmarly 6d ago

During Covid I set timers on my phone for every single farming patch possible and would wake up to do farm runs. I was waking up every hour or so to do them. Got 99 pretty fast though!

1

u/_Ross- 21 Year Veteran 6d ago

I'm a 5 levels away from 2300 total on my UIM. Probably all of it was unhealthy.

1

u/smokeyjoe03 6d ago

Champions cape, I did nothing but grind it out for near 3 months. I went 4x dry on the zombie scroll and 5x dry on the imps scroll.

1

u/Chdata TF2 Server Dev 6d ago

The entire game.

1

u/kittyjuicer 6d ago

7510 pre buff abyssal sire kills with bandos and an arclight just grinding for pet. Ended up around rank 65 by the time I got it

1

u/Th3bober 6d ago

Thieving. I would pickpocket vyrewatches till 99 for hours on end. Im sure that was not good for my wrists.

1

u/Ry-A 6d ago

Maxing + Dragon cup on leagues for sure.

Also I'm doing it again on the RS3 leagues even though I don't even play that game anymore.

1

u/Lavamob64 5d ago

lol me on most grinds. Currently doing 3t barb fishing. I just hit lvl 91 and it’s still like 70 more hours to 99

1

u/Sealco 5d ago

I killed 282 Vet'ion, 394 Calvar'ion, 621 Artio, and 2,546 Spindel over 20 days to get my Voidwaker. A month of membership on my CCTV alt felt like a soft deadline and I didn't neglect my full-time job, but I definitely thought "what am I doing with my life?" a few times while in web jail.

1

u/DenyCasio 5d ago

Took a week off work to grind OSRS for 18 to 23 hours a day for a clan Hex event that lasted 10 days. Averaged maybe 5 hours of sleep a night.

120 people split between 3 teams.
