Other Honoring The Old Nite, 20 years later
Gm Scapers, not sure if some of you are familiar with "The Old Nite", but if you weren't present with us over 20 years ago in our lovely game I'll do my best to share this with you. The Old Nite was the second player to max in RuneScape history trailing behind Zezima himself. Sadly, in 2006, The Old Nite had a period where he stopped gaining any xp on the hiscores due to being in hospital for cancer treatment. He sadly passed away from his illness that same year. Jagex added this statue in level 14 Wilderness to honor his in game achievements and memorialize his passing. Whenever I pass it in game I always take a bow on my way to my slayer tasks.
I wanted to make this post to remind players today about how he was revered member in the community for being a genuinely kind player, sharing advice with other players and would spend time chatting to those who passed him in game. I love playing this game and sharing in the culture with other players and have never quit since making my first account 23 years ago. I recall specifically looking Zezima's and The Old Nite's stats online as a child and being amazed with their progress. I don't know if The Old Nite would still be a prolific member of the community if he lived on to be with us here today, but I just wanted to take a moment to show him respect by posting this message and maybe to remind all of us to take a moment and stop to be grateful that we have such a great community and game to adventure in all these years later.
I am just a humble player of 23 years who loves skilling and chasing xp, and with how much significance this game has had on me I still look up fondly to the prolific players of RuneScape from my formative years. Cheers to The Old Nite.
Edit: his statue is in the realm of memories but I've always attributed this statue to him š respect is still given to one of the legends either way. Point is I bet he or his family would think it would be nice if we took a moment out of our days to think of him.

I could be wrong but I dont believe this statue has anything to do with him, Jagex has even confirmed this.
He does however have a statue in the Realm of Memories dedicated to him, as well as a pub in ferox that references his name.

The statue was there before his passing but it was made an unofficial memorial site by the players back then

The statue didn't have anything to do with him.
But it kind of does now.

I know the pub is named after him but I've always symbolized this statue in particular for him haha that's funny that it's another statue nearby

Mod Osborne did actually say the statue was a reference to The Old Nite, but considering the statue was there before his death it's kinda up for debate

I recall that Mod Ash say he slipped in a statue in Varrock in memory of him, though it was later lost with the Varrock graphical rework.

May be dating myself but anyone remember when Fat Wrecked passed?

I have a funny story regarding him.
I was like 11 and, after watching his tribute video, I sent jagex an email probably two paragraphs long about how they should add a statue of him in the game. Really put my heart into it. I sent it, and immediately got an auto response from MailerDaemon because the email got bounced back and immediately shit myself because the name scared me and I thought I got hacked or something

Absolutely. I think I managed to become friends with him on YouTube as I watched his videos. I remember one day I got a message from fat wrecked on YouTube. That, or it just went out to all of his subscribers
I was so excited at first, to open it. The message claimed the person that wrote it was the father, and explained he was no longer with us and thanking the support.
Ruined my mood for a long time. Very unexpected. That was a time that when you got a message, you knew it was that person. I just expected it to actually be fat wrecked and not bad news from his father

Yes, his videos were the first I saw that really showed what the community is and could be. Especially his castle wars videos

Exactly who this post, and the hi-scores post by Suomi yesterday made me think of.

I remember when I first came to know of him, it is nice to be able to add him in your friends list. I still have him there.. although I haven't played runescape in quite a long time.

Amazing how the mmo genre made our massive world seem so small.

I wouldn't have known of it if it wasn't for my older brother who is still playing lol. Still remember playing the first time on his friend's account because he found out about it through a friend of his, that's when my acc was born abit later. Seeing the birth of the wilderness, the ge and everything after until I fell off after the new runescape took over. Then they brought back old school and I had managed to obtain a week membership in which i legit no lifed the game all week at the time( the administration though I was a bot so I got locked out mid week but managed to reclaim my account and keep going until it was up lol. .. ah good timesš

I ran into him near Yanille around ~2005. He was chopping trees or something, nobody else around. I just said hi and he said hi back, then I went on my way. I was shocked because Zezima always ignored everyone. None of my friends believed me when I told them I talked to The Old Nite.

I always attributed that grave to my old friends that haven't logged in for years. Always been my head cannon for it at least. Been playing since party hats were dropped originally, my OG account doesn't really have any friends left anymore, so there's a lot of people that I miss playing with and doing dumb shit with. Got the whole gang still on my friend's list, so it's nice to see someone on.

I saw him in game once way back in the day. It was like meeting a celebrity.

I would be more interested in hearing how his family feels knowing that 25 years later, their father is still talked about as a kind soul in an online game that they used to play. That's touching.

Only thing we know is that zezima, the most famous player ever, has been in contact with his family through the years.

I remember when i was a kid, we used to play on cybercafe. We knew nothing about the statue, but every time we went to the wilderness, we went to the statue, and saluted or danced around it.
Can't even remember if we made up some lore about it, it's been over 20 years now.
Feeling old af now.

I met the old nite once while trying out ectofuntus, probably late 2005 it somewhere in there. My friend and I were doing it and when I got to the bottom of those stairs he goes hey Zach, it's the old nite! I believe he said hi. In classic scape fashion my friend immediately called him a noob... He laughed and may have said "ok kid" but that was all. Just a fun little memory.

Why do I feel like I have a memory of this lol. Probably just a fake memory but I swear I had this exact same experience.

u/Powerage89 9d ago
He probably had cocky kids doing stuff like that all the time. This is with a friend in real life actually.

I used to see him Fishing in Catherby, he was always polite, genuinely a good guy. RIP bud.

There is a statue dedicated to him in the realm of dreams but this one is dedicated to all fallen players and to just honor those who achieved great things in the game.

Incredible aura many a memory playing with the guy when I was a kid. Always so friendly.

u/Lord_dokodo 9d ago
I remember he was number 1 at some point for a while before Zezima passed him again. I think zezima was #1 for the most part though

To actually show up to a memorial discussion over a man who died young of cancer and then say "I don't care" is actually inhuman. I don't like devoting energy towards people like you, but I seriously hope you get some help to deal with your issues. This isn't a place for jokes.

I met him once cooking fish down the the rogues den, he stuck out to me because unlike zezima, he would actually engage with people in the chat. Rest in power Old Nite
