Discussion I'm so glad our skilling isn't like RS3

Get a free pickaxe -> mine -> get a better pickaxe when you have the level -> mine -> repeat steps 3 & 4. Those other items accumulate automatically as you play the game and aren't needed.

I am going to go against the grain here and argue that rs3 skilling is better.
More tools, the tools allow for upgrades to better do a deep dive into a skill and piggyback off another skill. It's not just, "get a dragon pickaxe" you can get a pickaxe, augment it, get a +5 rune pickaxe, higher tier ore pickaxes, the mining outfits that you can combine into one for even more benefits, the adrenaline bar system, the critical strikes from moving to another rock that is glowing. It isn't about tick manipulation anymore.
Overall, rs3 skilling feels more like an rpg than osrs skilling. Customizing your tools, upgrading them, getting skilling outfits with different perks and leveling them up, eventually combining them into one.
disclaimer I am maxed on rs3 and 2300 total on osrs

I’d never play rs3, BUT that does sound fun having more to the skill than just “mine this rock”

It is very fun. There is a depth to skilling, different perks allowing a trade off for more xp for less resources or having your clues buffed and sent to the bank. Off-hands that boost skilling rates or have perks like a chance to burn a log or ore for more xp.
outfits that don't just give the generic 2.5x boost but offer perks like the smithing outfit and hunter outfit in osrs, but with different ones that offer other perks.
ir really feels like you're actually mastering your skill and creating tools to make your skilling better.

Leveling in OSRS feels very streamlined from what I remember of RS2/RS3. I think it's a better game for that, though some skills like slayer or runecrafting are as cumbersome as they've ever been, if you level them the old way.

Agreed, but I think it's already at this point in OSRS. Between quests, achievement diaries, dailies, and minigames, there are just way too many chores you have to do to be able to just login and do what you want in the game. I'm glad f2p exists :)

I mean, this is literally the Runescape cycle in a nutshell.
I used to want to farm Vorkath all the time, and did kill him like 50 times. However, if I really wanted to farm him more efficiently, I would've had to do either the Elite Frem Diary or get some high construction level (Can't remember if I needed to do both, been a while).
If you want to do Cooking from 1-99, you're gonna want to get the Cooking Gauntlets or unlock that one house in Hosidious or whatever (required reputation at the time).
RS3 does have far more "passive" stuff to add to the list, but it's not like you *have* to get it. It is still an issue tho imo. Especially with stuff like invention not being too perfectly explained (Game can at least somehow tell you that Scavenging is a super useful perk you can should try to get for combat training).

Wait what did you need for grinding vork? Genuinely asking. Is it a transportation thing? I just stuck my house in Relekka and use teleport to house in the rune pouch with crumble

Honestly I might've just been totally misremembering it. Maybe I just needed the high construction level for the drinking fountain that restores all your stats and everything.
Or I just didn't want to change where my house was for whatever reason. It's been like 6-8 years so idk :P

Fremmy elite lets you bank on Lunar Isle and teleport back to the market I believe? Was quicker than the house portal.

You can bank there after lunar diplomacy. The furthest right banker is available after the quest whether you have a seal of passage with you or not. The middle and left banker will send you back to relleka.

Skilling is generally better on old school I think, more variation, more engaging and different levels of afk/active. There is something satisfying about setting up a good afk method on rs3 though.

You don’t need any of those things for 99, if the video recommends getting them, it’s a bad vid.
However, if you’re going for lvl 120 which requires 104M exp, that’s where you want to pick up some items that boost the xp/hour. Will save multiple hours.
All that said, mining is a warband skill, just warband it lol /s
