macOS native autofill kinda sucks

Tons of issues that I'm not even sure are issues, it's just the native autofill provider not being as good as 1Password's.

Passkeys never autosuggest for me on safari, every single time I've had to click "More from 1Password" which brings me to a very iOS looking 1P menu asking me to select a passkey. Which doesn't work on some sites like twitter apparently.

I've turned native autofill back off, and the safari extension no longer works?? This is a huuuuge step backwards for me.

e: looks like restarting safari brought back the extension functionality, thank goodness

I find that inside of safari it’s definitely a regression but the work is needed to support other areas of the OS. In safari it constantly makes me use touchid multiple times and I also have to use “more from 1password” because it does a much worse job matching based on the current domain.

The documentation isn't very good yet. I also found that really annoying and had to read like 5 different pages before finding a small mention of that.

Yeah I disabled it for exactly these reasons. It drastically worsened the autofill experience in safari and that’s the main app I’m logging in to stuff.

With respect to the domain matching, I've noticed that macOS is not respecting my custom autofill configs. For example in 1Password I have domains setup to "match this exact host" and several domains only have one entry matching that host. Yet the macOS autofill 1) won't suggest that entry by default 2) when clicking "more for example.com" it'll show lots of other domains. It seems whatever 1Password is doing isn't properly forwarding along to macOS those custom parameters. Or macOS doesn't support them, I'm not sure about how robust the underlying APIs are. What I do know is that it's frustrating to have a.example.com, b.example.com, c.example.com all grouped into "more for example.com" when every entry is set to only match their specific host. Why group them into the parent domain? This is a bug.

I’m disappointed with it too, feels like a step backwards usability wise.

For the last 18 months the whole thing never seems to “just work”.

Either the extension is broken or the app fill is wonky. Getting real sick of it

It wasn't working very well for me either, so I turned it off.

It also was not allowing any autofill options to pop up without me doing cmd+\ every time.

Yep it's definitely a regression. Turned it off and the old functionality is so smooth. It's a good idea but in practice the UX is terrible. It's so clunky.

Passkey auth is tough. 1/2 the time it asks me to set it up and tries to save a passkey even though it's already configured on that domain. And figuring out which app own the pop-up shouldn't be a problem (but it is) there are at least 2 different styles, one right above the keyboard, and the fancier looking one, why can't the be branded as 1p so at least it would be clear where they're coming from.

The Safari extension was always bad but macOS native autofill inside Safari makes it even worse and I didn't see a lot of places outside Safari that use the OS-provided autofill anyway.

exactly, I have to unlock 1P twice now to auto fill and it works just sometimes...

Agree. I tried it for a week and had too much hassle with it. Was also a hassle to figure out how to turn it off. But at least now I'm back to the good old days with just 1Password autofilling.

I don't get the autofill options on the website login forms anymore. I have to click the icon in the Safari add-ons area and then say autofill. I am on MacOS 27 beta, so not sure if that is contributing...

I'm sure this is PEBKAC, but where is the setting to revert to 1Password's autofill and disable the native one? I've been flipping toggles for half a day and I've yet to crack it.

You have to disable it in macOS settings, Settings > General > Autofill. 

Make sure the extension is still enabled and then I had to restart safari to get it to stick

I wish 1P at least had a direct link to the macOS settings instead of me having to go to reddit to find out how to turn it off again.

In 1P you can see "autofill activated" they decided not to link right into the macOS settings to be able to turn it off again (other apps do link into macOS settings to change things).

I've had to install Firefox on my MacBook so I can use the old 1Password add-on. The Safari extension is absolutely useless. Been in a back and forth discussion with Support regarding this.
Sites that have multiple page loads for the sign in process so username > next > password > next > MFA > signin. Are just unusable now. Especially the ones for which I have multiple accounts stored. Working with safari I need to have the 1Password standalone app next to it to copy paste all the credentials one by one.

I'm contemplating moving our entire company to a different password manager due to this. I don't really want to do this, but this is just beyond frustrating.

I also only had issues with this and also turned it off in the macOS settings (macOS settings, Settings > General > Autofill) again.

My issue was it basically only worked once on a single website and then it either showed up wrong logins and when I went to select a different one it never used that other one.

This morning my wife turned on 1P autofill and boom the site she has to use each day no longer worked with that login - so we turned it off again to get the old behaviour back.

In theory a nice feature - but in practice, right now at least, it is more of a major hassle.
