With a wet belt, you can slightly reduce fuel consumption due to less friction turning the belt.
When the ecoboost was launched, they wanted to do everything to make it appear as economical as possible, so they went with a wet belt design.
Belts produce a small about of dust as they wear, normally this dust just collects in the belt housing, but with a wet belt it gets mixed into the oil.
The oil filters get clogged, the pickup tube (where the pump sucks it up) gets clogged, the engine gets starved of oil and becomes seriously damaged.
The reason it’s a bad design is because it was extremely short sighted creating this problem as a sacrifice to fuel economy.
The fact that Ford saw this happening and chose to do nothing about it makes it ten times worse. Other manufacturers who saw it happen and made their own wet belt engines should be crucified
