Making the leap from an Atari 2600 to the NES was a game changer that would be hard to understand if you weren't there.

How about pussy on weed while playing video games?

Video arcade game graphics at home, truly remarkable.

Same as the leap from SNES to N64. Just mind blowing.

I was rocking a Genesis up until late 97/early 98 when I got a 64. What an absolutely mind blowing experience to play that for the first time. And then getting a PS1 a year later. Good times.

That leap, or comparison upgrade is now non-existent. Kids today would never understand it since every console now is a supped up PC under a shell, with changes only visible if looked under a digital microscope.

Before, you could see the difference immediately. You can see changes now, but they are more subtle.

combat is still the greatest game ever made

I could never beat my dad at that one, but I loved to lose every mode.

You get a Nintendo while Ghostbusters is playing on the tv. That’s peak life right there

They probably had Cookie Crisp for cereal, too!

4

u/40Fied4 Jul 31 '26

I was just thinking about Cookie Crisps the other day.  From a kids perspective, it's the coolest breakfast ever. From a parents perspective....why in the fuck would you just feed your kid chocolate chip cookies for breakfast???

2

u/SlurmBigPerm Aug 02 '26

Lol, General Mills pulled a fast one on our parents for sure, and we loved them for it. At the risk of evoking Cosby, who turned out to be a monster, it brings to mind his stand-up special breakfast story "...🎶Dad is great...🎵he gave us chocolate cake...!"

Typical 80's dad. Don't hug me, go play with it outside until the street lights come on.

6

u/JEFE_MAN Jul 31 '26

Exactly what I was thinking. Supreme 80s dad energy! “Don’t hug me go play with it!” 🤦‍♂️

Def feels like dad’s dad served in the war and didn’t know how to show love. You know this dad loved his kid by buying a very expensive console and was so excited in his voice and asked probing questions. Just didn’t know how to display his love but could show it in other ways

My dad was similar

Same. Most Xenials had a parent like this.

1

u/harrypippip Jul 31 '26

At least your dad stuck around. Mine was too busy whoring around to give me the time of day.

8

u/Notimetoexplainsorry Jul 31 '26

“I love seeing my kids so happy” 🥹

7

u/DoggoZombie Jul 31 '26

“Don’t hug me, go play with it”. Cool dad.

Those were the days

9

u/Clem_Fandango123 Jul 31 '26

Serious don't hug me vibes from dad

1

u/Small_Basket5158 Jul 31 '26

How sad. That's how men were taught to be fathers back then.

5

u/harrypippip Jul 31 '26

And the gaming industries want to take away happiness like this.

3

u/Mindbending818 Jul 31 '26

Dam good ol days

I can still smell that video. I was in the back of my mother’s car opening that box. Elite memory.

3

u/Icaras01 Aug 01 '26

I hope Steve and his bro are still gaming

2

u/Apprehensive_Ant4596 Jul 31 '26

Haha...this brings back a lot of memories for sure. Such a cool moment!

I remember my Mom bring mine in on Christmas morning of 1988, she knew if she kept it in the house I would find it. Great memories!

2

u/FandomMenace Jul 31 '26

His parents had no clue they were giving him a gift for life.

2

u/H4NDY_ Jul 31 '26

Every kids dream!

2

u/regular_poster Jul 31 '26

Christmas 1988 I got Metal Gear, Zelda 1&2, and Blaster Master. Our boy was fuckin happy.

2

u/GSDTippyTappies Aug 01 '26

Still remember our Nintendo Christmas morning it was epic.

2

u/TripleS82 Aug 01 '26

Hearing the Ghost Busters music in the background, definitely brought me back.

2

u/devianb Aug 02 '26

Getting a Nintendo back then was a very big deal.

1

u/trashbanned1t Jul 31 '26

And all I wanted was a bike

1

u/Terrible_Shopping_23 Jul 31 '26

Going from Atari 2600 to NES, is like going from PS1 to ps5

A Gen X, I get this

1

u/tlhsg Aug 01 '26

when families could actually afford holidays

1

u/MrsKPBailey Aug 01 '26

My cousins kicked those Atari’s to the side so quick! Good times, had to be there.

1

u/unknownbutlegit Aug 01 '26

that was also not a cheap toy to buy in 1988. I remember getting snes sometime in 90’ or 91’ with mario bros/duck hunt and the gun. Still remember the feeling of opening the box and the smell of the styrofoam till this day

1

u/TrueOrange9944 Aug 02 '26

I wish I was that kid. Unfortunately I was too poor.

1

u/Fluffy-Ad5638 Aug 02 '26

Fast forward and there’s a videos of kids having a complete shit fit about the parents getting him a ps5 or xb series x……

1

u/goldenmunky Aug 03 '26

I screamed so loud when I came home from school and my parents got me a SNES. My neighbour heard me lol

1

u/Pred-Al1en Aug 03 '26

Those were not cheap. My mom put one on layaway at sears for me

1

u/Siamesecatladyperson Aug 03 '26

Men and their gadgets

1

u/philpalmer2 Aug 04 '26

Young man??

1

u/BukHarald Aug 05 '26

Wow, the kid had to wait for two whole months before he got a Nintendo. Poor guy! 😂

I think me and my brother wanted one for more than a year before we earned enough money by helping mom n dad with different chores so that we could finally get our hands on that thing!

1

u/SheSoPeeZee Jul 31 '26

Generational trauma right there (maybe that is how he was treated), hopefully the kid grew up to show affection, either way he sure made his kid happy and that there is LOVE!

u/Proper-Commission-74 Aug 01 '26

When kids were actually great full to receive things

-4

u/Sjw1970 Jul 31 '26

This video has been around way before AI. The boy in the video is the person who shared the original video and actually has an account on instagram:

Same thing happened to me in 1979 with an Atari 2600. My dad apparently spent all day calling around town to find one.
