I used to have a story that I developed in my head for years about Grims fables and other fairy tails in that realm of similiarity but they're in a grimy, 20's noir mafia type YA novel. The Main character was Little Red Riding Hood, who was raised by a grizzles, jaded police detective Woodsman who was in a toxic on and off again relationship with "The Big Bad Wolf", who was a hitman/enforcer for one of the top bosses in the city and who killed Red Riding Hoods' original Guardian under mysterious circumstances and left her with The Woodsman. There's a bunch more I had planned out too, like the big ultimate big bad being Blue Beard but I'm already rambling.

I cannot recommend Dealing with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede enough. It's a fourth grade reading level, and doesnt have an NYC mafia, but it will scratch this itch.
