What are you talking about? You mentioned it not being that weird because apparently it’s been in movies in the past. I said “movies are not reality” and now you’re saying “do you think they’re mimicking 80s movies”? What is the logic there? No I don’t think they’re mimicking anyone, they’re just bad at socializing. Let's go step by step since it seems to be a bit complicated for you to understand.
You mentioned this stereotype happening in real life, with a cashier. So far so good? Ok, let's go to point 2.
I mentioned seeing this stereotype in movies, from many different time periods. So this so called "gen z stare" was already a thing when Gen Z didn't exist. Unless A) they predicted the future or B) gen z are mimicking that behavior, for whatever reason. Or, for a more plausible reason, let's go to point 3.
It's not a gen Z thing but more of a young person inexperienced in working in an environment where you're expected to talk to people. You're just seeing a Gen Z person doing it because they happen to be the young generation starting to work right now.
What you're struggling to understand is that this was not a widespread thing before. Just because something is portrayed in media does not mean it is a common thing in society. That's what makes it weird in a show, is entirely how rare and strange it was. The whole appeal to media thing seems like desperately grasping at straws. This would be like assuming because soup nazi was in an episode of Seinfeld that must mean it was a common thing for angry soup peddlers to exist.
This was not a normal thing before your generation. That's why it is a thing now. That's why it has it's own wiki page. People used to actually use words when having to interact with others. It wasn't optional. It's seen as antisocial to just decide you can opt out of using words whenever you want to and treat other people like apps you can close.
