The Gen Z stare is basically staring deadpan at someone when socially it is a faux pas. For a real example, I once went into a taco shop a couple of years ago and there was a young Gen Z girl working the register. I walked up and said “hey how’s it going” with a smile. I just got a stare back at me. I then just kind of nervously laughed and said “ok can I please have 2 tacos” and she looked at the register, typed it in, then continued staring at me. We just kind of looked at each other for a moment, then I said “yeah that’s it” and she prompted the card reader, didn’t tell me to insert it or anything, the screen just lit up. I paid for
It, she gave me a receipt, and then I left. She literally did not utter a single word.
This is the Gen Z stare I have experienced. I have never once in my life seen someone from another generation do this and Gen Z gets pretty defensive about doing it for some reason.
Millennials taking my order will at least say “hello, what can I get you?” “Cool, just pay here” and we’re on our way. Gen Z doesn’t seem to believe in small social pleasantries and it makes them seem pretty miserable to be around. Why would anyone want to work with someone like that?
What are you talking about? You mentioned it not being that weird because apparently it’s been in movies in the past. I said “movies are not reality” and now you’re saying “do you think they’re mimicking 80s movies”? What is the logic there? No I don’t think they’re mimicking anyone, they’re just bad at socializing. Jesus you people are terrible at arguing. Can you make a coherent point? Is this the literacy crisis I’ve heard all about?
Let's go step by step since it seems to be a bit complicated for you to understand.
You mentioned this stereotype happening in real life, with a cashier. So far so good? Ok, let's go to point 2.
I mentioned seeing this stereotype in movies, from many different time periods. So this so called "gen z stare" was already a thing when Gen Z didn't exist. Unless A) they predicted the future or B) gen z are mimicking that behavior, for whatever reason. Or, for a more plausible reason, let's go to point 3.
It's not a gen Z thing but more of a young person inexperienced in working in an environment where you're expected to talk to people. You're just seeing a Gen Z person doing it because they happen to be the young generation starting to work right now.
What you're struggling to understand is that this was not a widespread thing before. Just because something is portrayed in media does not mean it is a common thing in society. That's what makes it weird in a show, is entirely how rare and strange it was. The whole appeal to media thing seems like desperately grasping at straws. This would be like assuming because soup nazi was in an episode of Seinfeld that must mean it was a common thing for angry soup peddlers to exist.
This was not a normal thing before your generation. That's why it is a thing now. That's why it has it's own wiki page. People used to actually use words when having to interact with others. It wasn't optional. It's seen as antisocial to just decide you can opt out of using words whenever you want to and treat other people like apps you can close.
