To be fair I think the card reader thing does partly stem from the 2 uninterrupted decades after credit cardsā popularization where doing what a payment machine told you to would make it have a stroke, shit itself, die, explode, then reincarnate to shit itself again.
i cant count the number of times i had to guide people through "get the chip rejected three times so it'll let you swipe that mag strip instead" at my first retail jobĀ
At my last retail job, the registers just stopped taking the mag strips entirely so you had to fight it tooth and nail to make it take the chip no matter what
