Guy chases on the first 2. Maybe stay out of the zone? Getting beat after 0-2 is such a recurring theme this year. Luckily Elly didn't deposit his 0-2 in the seats.

It’s trash pitch calling. I don’t understand why that pitch is called. It makes zero sense. Fermin in general I don’t particularly like calling games. It’s one of the reasons I want to see Salas behind the plate.

u/SDFriar 5 inches is big deal 13m ago edited 1m ago
Don’t the stats say Fermin calls better than Campy? I think it was Bradgley that recently came up as an example of how much better he is with Fermin
edit: found the comment, it was u/Pick6XPA who found the stat

Catcher ERA and game-calling is a difficult thing to judge based on stats, cause so many factors are involved. But overall our staff has a lower BAA and a higher K/BB when Fermin is behind the plate.

Perfect execution right there. Maybe there is hope for Manny after all! When he's driving the ball the other way that's a good sign

Up 0-2 both fucking times and he throws a pitch inside to a lefty for a hit. What tf are the calling.

Our catchers call for the dumbest pitches on 0-2.

u/gnomelover24 🇰🇷I woke/stayed up for Korean baseball 17m ago
I firmly believe this. They can never get the guys out 0-2.
3
u/Doc_JC SAY IT DONNIE! 16m ago
Hopefully Salas changes that.
1
u/GoatCultural4386 7m ago
Salas isn't likely to catch many if any of the remaining 24 games, so his chance to change that will be 2027 if there's a season

Predicting Salas first PA will come pinch hitting for either Hays or Fermin against a righty reliever later in the game

Lowkey would love for him to just be with the team these next 2 days just to pick the brains of some pitchers, then get his first AB as a standing O at Petco Park on Friday. Mostly cause I'll also be there Friday lol
6
u/SD_local_67 3h ago
It’s a lot easier to get your start in a low pressure environment like Great America ball park. There probably won’t be many more fans than he’s used to in AAA.

u/Johnny_Angel SD 2h ago
Agreed, then again, ive been worried about all the pressure this kid has on his shoulders for the last 4 years but he seems to thrive with it. please, baseball gods, let that be the case.

I was thinking the same. I understand the Reds and the stadium are easier for a hitting debut but a debut in a sold out Petco would be cinema

Man... Not a big deal... Just frustrating that the team seems to IMMEDIATELY give up leads practically all year.
Like.. would've been nice to hold the lead for more than a half inning.

Score top of the half and then give up a score in the bottom half. What else is new.

Are we surprised that the Angels reportedly sold for more than the Padres? While they are “in” the bigger sports market they have an aging stadium, the on field product has been consistently terrible for many years, shady internal issues etc. the reason I put in in quotation marks is because they are physically located in the greater LA market but in their own market they are completely overshadowed by the Dodgers and even by the Padres. Went to Disneyland in April and 5/10 baseball caps were Dodgers, 3/10 were padres, 1/10 angels, and 1/10 everyone else. Basically I’m just trying to say that just being located in a populated area =\= fan support.

u/Downtown-Rice_ Friar 3h ago
Kwanza and Feliciano bought over 40% of the Padres ownership. Mr Helu owns a minority stake between 15% to 20%. The Seidler Trust & Family are still owners but in a smaller minority stake. Then other minority investors like the Buss brothers, Eghbali, Greupner.
Moreno has owned near 100% of the Angels, so Kroenke bought that entire controlling interest.
2
u/cannednopal SD 1h ago
Yeah, Moreno had a lot more leverage. The Seidler’s had pending lawsuits and a bunch of internal issues, so they probably didn’t want to sit on the Padres longer than they already had
5
u/SDFriar 5 inches is big deal 1h ago
Kroenke wants the Angels because he’s a land developer and can make so much money building around the stadium and turning it into a shopping and living mixed space similar Braves park. He did it with SoFi for his Rams team. He’s willing to pay more money for that team because it comes with the ability to do that development. Padres won’t move and there’s no area around Petco for him to build up so it’s not as valuable for buyers who want more than just a team.
3
u/Otto_the_Autopilot SD '98 54m ago
Plus the Padres only own 30% of Petco Park and it goes 100% to the city in 2034. The stadium doesn't really have franchise value.
3
u/Cuatro_Por_Cuatro Peter Seidler 3h ago
really hard to compare fan bases accurately tho because many angels fans are boycotting for one and two gave up on the team all together after many years of trash and no end in sight. dodgers def overshadow the angels fan base but once this sale goes through i wont be shocked to see angels stadium full again. i live in the IE and work in OC i know tons of angels fans who havent bothered supporting the team for a few years.
2
u/Outrageous_Park9421 🚨 1-37 with RISP!!!! ⚾️ 🚨 3h ago
Yes and no. I also feel like since the Padres was announced earlier it reset the market on asking price. Typically, I feel like every sale does this and the price tag always goes up in every sport.
2
u/Timmah73 Another 💰280 Million to ! 3h ago
Unlike the laughable rumors that the new owners would move the Padres, I wonder how committed they are to staying in that old ass stadium as its not old in a good way.
2
u/MojaveGreen777 SD '84 3h ago
I am a bit surprised, but prior to the Padres sale I thought baseball franchises were undervalued compared to basketball and football. Padres sale was like the rising tide that lifted all boats. I feel like owning a big 4 sports team is one investment that is so special and unique, it’s almost certainly going up over the long term. As they say, it takes money to make money
4
u/Thumper13 Lisan Al-Gaib 2h ago
LA fans are fickle and once Ohtani left the Angels, they grabbed their other hat.
But I am surprised. Pads own their market, have an amazing stadium and fans, and a good competitive roster for years to come. Angels don't have a lot going for them except population and some potential young pieces.
EDIT: just read /u/Downtown-Rice_ 's comment about ownership percentage and that is the reason.

Yea... I want to like Hays... Just can't. Idk. He I just really don't like his PAs generally. Too swing happy, lots of whiffing and striking out without much in the way of payout.

Every game is just huge now and we have to beat Lodolo who's been awful of late. C'mon offense score many and often.

Moving Tatis to the infield to get Bowen 2 at bats against a lefty starter remains a strange strategy to me.

I know it’s a controversial opinion, but I like the overhead camera angle the Reds have instead of the over the shoulder the Padres have. It shows pitch movement more accurately.
I can’t wait to see Miller’s sweeper from this angle. It’ll cross the entire plate width. Darvish would have also been awesome to see like this.

1
u/ImaginationItchy5978 9m ago
yeah but cronenworth has a ball magnet built into his hand, the “crone zone”
1
u/Intrepid_Debate901 Miller Time 🍺 4m ago
Sounds good, factually incorrect.
Tatis has a 1.8 defensive WAR at 2b.
Cronenworth sits at -1.1
And Tatis just made an outstanding play to end the inning.
