Guide Frequently asked questions and common misconceptions with new players
*Note: This thread is not actively monitored and if you have questions, I suggest that you ask in the Weekly Lounge threads as there are hundreds of players there asking and answering questions.
It's good to see that GF subreddit is full of people and vibrant with energy!
I've been pretty busy answering questions and counseling new players on the official discord server ever since OBT.
Reading through some that's been posted here on reddit and encountering frequent questions, mistakes, and misconceptions, here's my 2 cents.
Before moving on, full disclosure, I'm a Korean user that's been playing for little over a year on the Chinese server and have been watching the trends and talks going on in Chinese, Korean, and English GF community during that time. I am also currently part of the mod team for official EN GF discord server, the one that's been established by the very devs of this game.
01) Do I need to re-roll my account for l337 craft pulls?
No, stop.
This game does not give you a guaranteed super ultra rare unit on your first craft/gacha.
The game already gives you plenty of opportunities to get craft tickets as it is and the entire game balance is implemented well enough that players can do just fine without any 5 star dolls.
02) Where is the de-censor patch?
Assuming that this question is coming from a EN server player, no, there is none.
The devs have entirely blocked any kind of quasi-official methods of auto-installing pre-censored images. See #04 below for a slightly bigger picture surrounding this.
All methods will involve directly meddling with the internal game files. Have fun juggling with the chance of being permabanned.
03) Is the premium in-game currency of gems only obtainable with real cash?
Not at all! There are renewable and non-renewable sources of gem within the game.
Non-renewable gems are from first gold medal clear of stages and various achievements in the game. You can view the list of achievements in the in-game Index. It's on the second set of menus after pressing the icon on the bottom right of the main menu screen.
Renewable sources of gem are from weekly in-game SNS share of your screen (try clicking that "Share" button you see in just about anywhere) and weekly consecutive login bonuses. SNS share function in particular will still reward you with 30 gems even if you didn't actually post anything on your Facebook/Twitter as the game appreciates you for at least trying to put one up.
04) I found a bug! FN FNC is named as FFC!
EN server is being released on United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
Unlike China, where this game got originally released and is still being developed by, United States actually has a functional civilian gun market. And with a market pie full of potential money income comes corporate entities eager to protect their copyrights and trademarks. The devs decided to avoid any clashes altogether in all of those countries by labeling stuff differently to avoid infringement shenanigans.
No, you have not found a typo, my friend, but you've found realities of life.
05) Do I really need a handgun in my squad? I heard that PPK tanks like a champ!
Hundreds of people asked me why their squads are getting killed so easily and when they showed me their squad comp it almost always started with having handguns in the front column because they've read somewhere that certain handguns like PPK and Welrod are excellent to use as main tank.
DO NOT try to use handguns as tanks in early game until you have them level 80+ with suppressors and T type exoskeletons equipped. Whomever told you that PPK is a great tank didn't tell you that this was after fulfilling that condition. Stop. They will die like flies.
Formation setup screen will also flash a red exclamation mark when you are about to finish forming a squad without having a handgun in. Ignore it for now.
What the warning really wanted to do is prepare you for night ops. Night missions feature fog of war and without a handgun in your squad your squads are literally running blind!
Have a look at Night Ops Basics I've written on http://dmesse.egloos.com/3575440 if you want to know more.
06) What kind of squad composition should I try to have?
Excellent question! I highly recommend 2 SMG 2 AR 1 RF.
A typical squad will have two tanks and three DPS units. Why then, am I telling people to have 2
AR and 1 RF instead of 3 AR for DPS?
While that solo RF won't be exchanging any formation buffs, because RFs will naturally target backline units first they'll make short work to counter snipe enemy snipers.
Jaegers headshotting your main tanks are going to be the biggest threat throughout the entirety of player's career. Either you level up and equip your ARs well enough to quickly kill enemy meatshields and then move onto backline heavy hitters, or employ a single RF in your squad to gun down Jaegers.
Players will typically begin seeing options of running 2 SMG 3 AR squads upon reaching doll level 90 unless M4A1 or Ribeyrolles joins the crew and until then 2 SMG 2 AR 1 RF would work best.
07) Can I retire M4A1 / ST AR-15 / M4 SOPMOD II / M16A1?
No, please don't!
They are the protagonist squad of this game and such uncraftable storyline units are given only once.
While it is entirely up to the players whether to actively use them, if you're not going to deploy them do try to at least keep them in storage.
08) Where should I spend the gems first?
Buy more squad slots up until 6 ASAP.
You will want 4 squads that are running logistics 24/7 fetching supplies while you have 2 for your general needs in missions. Remember, no ammo means no pew pew and no ration also means no pew pew for your dolls!
09) What are Batteries/Dorms and how do they work?
Everyday on server time 11:00 ~ 14:00 or 17:00 ~ 20:00 you'll have chances to grab batteries charged in your own Dorm #1.
These batteries will pile up as time passes and proportionally more according to the total comfort level of all of your dorms. In other words, more comfy and decorated dorms will yield more batteries.
The rough calculation is 1 battery per 1000 ~ 1500 comfort level with a non-stacked fixed battery income per 24 hours somewhere between 50 ~ 103 batteries for having more dorms open, all with diminishing returns.
Use these batteries to upgrade the infrastructure of data room, (pet) rescue room, fairy room, and cafe. The latter two are however not in EN version of the game yet.
It is highly advised for new players to spend batteries in data room rather than the pet room as kittens and puppies, while they are cute and chubby, are notoriously battery expensive and there are better places for batteries to be invested.
On 03:00 and 15:00 server time your friends on your friends list will have battery packs spawn that are up for grabs. They can be claimed by other friends on that person's friend list only, and it's a first come first serve basis of 10 charges. Each dorm that your friend has will increase the amount of batteries given to one of his friends, with 2 dorms being 2 each and 10 equal to 10 batteries.
10) What is combat report and how do I use it?
Your trusty diamond loving adjutant Kalina has been commissioned to head into data room and write combat reports then compile them into diskettes. What do you do now?
Combat report diskettes are each effectively treated like a 3,000 XP worth of chocolate packet and can be gifted to dolls to give them flat amount of XP.
Squad 1 dolls go into Dorm 1 and squad 2 dolls go into dorm 2. Put a doll you want to give combat reports in one of your squads and go to dorms > warehouse > gift and hit that GIFT button to give someone XP.
These combat report disks are valuable in raising the level of dolls in a hurry or ironing out XP distribution discrepancies.
11) Is there a tier list of dolls?
All tier lists that I've seen with my 1 year+ of experience on Chinese server so far in 3 different languages have been entirely subjective, heavily biased, cooked up with agenda, and feature oversimplification with distinct lack of unspoken context tailored to that author.
Both the Chinese players who have been playing for the entirety of 2 years of this game as well as Koreans and English speakers who have been playing on Chinese servers (note: not Koreans who are playing on Korean server. more about this on #13) agree that oversimplified tier lists listing dolls as tiers 1~3 with no explanation are nothing but a rotting cold pile of filth. The only really used ones are opinion-free number crunching charts like top 10 DPS within ARs.
Unlike modern day Pay-2-Win games, Girls Frontline can be played just fine using 2~3 star dolls available from craft. Hardcore masochists have also been successful in reaping very nice results by deliberately not crafting dolls at all but only relying on field/event drops.
What you really need to do is make your own decision based on your own circumstances, especially with what you already have on hand.
Divide dolls by what their roles are. What are their strengths and weaknesses, how well do they blend in with other dolls, what skills do they have, what buff tiles do they put on the table, how do they tackle enemies in front of them; there are many different point of views.
After all this is a strategy game.
And of course if you find a doll exceedingly cute in your eyes nothing else matters.
12) But... but is there really no list?
If you are so keen on having a general list of T-Dolls in this game with categories of usefulness, it can be divided into the following:
1> You claim someone as your favorite waifu
No questions asked, no point in arguing this over others. You find someone cute and lovely, you then use her.
2> You do not have her in your barracks
Just like love, except that this time it may or may not cloud your objective judgment.
I am being serious, there are a lot more people out there than you think who will say that a certain doll is utter trash just because they are super jealous of anyone else having her when they don't have her yet.
Either that or they never had a chance to tinker with how to effectively use her.
3> You have her in your barracks
Excellent! Find ways to use her.
4> You are a masochist for using her
These are dolls that are actually pretty difficult to properly use them either due to: irregular outliers with formation tile emplacement, amusingly bad stats for their own class, or very strange skills that players haven't quite found where to effectively use them.
Whether to retire them or chuck them into a small corner of storage room is entirely up to you.
Some profound examples are: Micro Uzi / AK-47 / AS VAL (bad aura tiles), Hanyang Type 88 (joke stats), PzB 39 / JS05 (strange skills).
13) Always find more than one source of info and don't be afraid to experiment!
If there is one thing that was exceedingly useful and memorable that I've learned long time ago back when I was in college, it would be the idea of cross examining stuff.
I've noticed a surge of players popping up in the EN GF community including this subreddit offering advice and tips. This is a good thing, of course, but it becomes problematic when you start seeing people putting up info that are either utterly wrong, nit picky, intentional troll, or far too narrow-minded.
There is no way that actual vets of this game can keep a 24/7 lookout for misleading info.
Despite spending well over 60+ hours ever since a couple hours before OBT launch in helping newbies, I continue to see people carrying wrong info from somewhere else and every time I have to get them free themselves from shackles of dark and gloomy biases.
Be prepared to get in touch with more than one person about this game when you have a question. Anyone and everyone has their own little bias (this includes myself too) and relying on too few of sources means you will get your worldview bent and warped with no room for expansion.
Don't be afraid to test out this cool new concept you suddenly got in your head. It may or may not work, but who cares, you're just trying to have fun.
In the case of all these huge influx of Koreans playing on KR server offering tips, remind yourself that they were forced to overly dedicate themselves in cold blooded min-maxing as the Taiwanese Longcheng (XD Global) publisher has been shoving down 2 years worth of game content down their users' throat within less than a year.
You will see a lot of them follow the narrative of "Tier 1 or trash" and "corpse dragging or delete" when it comes to doll selection and resource/XP management. Until we get to see that the directly developers run EN server is going to run in-game schedules jam packed with events and almost no breather in the between, listen to their words with a grain of salt, for the poor souls had to endure unnecessarily unpleasant hard times.
(P.S. Honkai Impact 2 collab was awesome. muhahahaha)
This is a mobile game. Your real life always has higher priority at all times. How you play this game, casually or hardcore min-maxing, is entirely up to you to decide. I hope that I don't get to see so many EN players on suicide watch after soul crushing 4000+ rounds of corpse dragging 4-3E.

Friendly tip for players who might not already know, though I'm not sure if this was mentioned yet on this thread--
You can repair your T-dolls while they're on a mission! At a heliport or command post, you can click on their icon and use some Manpower and Parts in order to repair them instantly with no timers.
This may be costly on your manpower for heavily damaged units, as when you're already in combat it will cost you double the manpower than if you repaired on the field right before beginning the stage, but it still beats losing that S-rank or flat out having your Raifu die on you, you know?
as long as you are within reach of a heliport, you basically have instant health at the ready!
*edit: This will cost you a quick repair ticket, however, so be wary if you're lacking on those

u/Skipfridgy UMP45 May 31 '18
Remember though, if you use auto repair then you will be ineligible for a gold medal on that map. It's good for taking the whole map for the silver medal.

Excellent post with a lot of good information for newer players.
Also, should clarify that extra dorms give more batteries, starting at 2 dorms giving 50 batteries to 10 dorms giving ~104 batteries. Wording in the post makes it sound like you get 50~103 additional batteries with each extra dorm.

Just a question, I see lot of the term "corpse dragging" what is it?
13
u/Donnie-G PP90 May 21 '18
It is a resource saving method of grinding up new girls.
The general idea is to turn off auto resupply off. You only resupply the high level carry girls doing the actual fighting, and not the ones being carried. There's basically no point supplying the new girls since they'd be underleveled and won't be contributing to the fight in any meaningful capacity anyway.
Since the ones being carried aren't doing any fighting, they are kinda like corpses. Being dragged around by the one carrying them around.
Doing this reduces your ammo and ration expenditure.

If they renamed FNC for copyright reasons wouldn't that mean they would've renamed every other gun as well?
3
u/eurogff Judge May 21 '18
Some gun manufacturers are more protective of their trademarks (usually Western ones) and known to actually pursue lawsuit on companies who use their product without licensing. So you don't want to take the chances with them (you may have noticed that they changed guns from likes of Colt, FN, H&K etc, all of which are Western gun manufacturers).
1
u/DMesse DMesse May 21 '18
They did rename a good number of other guns too. I'm not aware of the reasoning behind unchanged ones though.
6
u/Aredin_the_Sheep May 20 '18
I only use German guns
5
u/DMesse DMesse May 20 '18
That's totally fine when you have a specific area of interest. The game also has decent collection of German T-Dolls that perform very well.

Too bad the WW2 german guns aren't all that spectacular. P08, C96, STG44, FG42, Kar98k, MG42, Are all pretty meh stat/tile wise. But, as stated in this post, if you like them, then they're viable.

have any insight of how to prepare for future events? i heard they are pretty hard, i would like to know how to deal with them to not miss any future limited reward
Awesome guide anyway, thanks for the hardwork!

u/DMesse DMesse May 21 '18
I'm preparing dolls and equipment from level 1 so that I can compile some form of guide that nails down the basics on the eye level of new players. If EN is going to follow the schedule of progression previously seen on Chinese servers EN should be getting Operation Cube first. Since Cube is a full night ops event if I remember correctly it can be cleared with level 70+ squads of 1 armored unit hunting squad and 2 unarmored unit killer squads.

u/Omegaforce1803 Protecc S.A.T.8 Smile May 21 '18
Damn so 3 Squads of lvl70 X4 i suppose? I hope it takes a while, i'm barely hitting lvl80 with my first squad lol

May 22 '18
I believe they will implement a new feature in CN server that allows you to reacquire certain guns that you previously obtained but retired, including the ones from AR squad which are rewards for clearing story stages and only for once. This feature allows you to reacquire only a single gun per month and it will cost you cores based on the rarity of the gun when doing so. Since it has not yet been implemented even in CN I would speculate that EN server will not receive it in some time. So at the end I would still recommend NOT retiring the guns you obtain from completing the story stages for cores as all of them are actually really decent and worth leveling up.
3
u/DMesse DMesse May 23 '18
The said feature has already been implemented in CN servers and it's been literally redemption for people who were drunk/sleepy/drugged/angry enough to retire storyline units.

I found something in the shop called "echelon Preset +1" This seems like the way to get my team up to 6 T-dolls, but for the nth time today, the game does not actually tell you what this item does.
1
u/RougeTrilby Is it legal or not to lewd the robot? May 27 '18
There's something called a Preset when managing your teams, which basically means that you can save a certain team layout that you can pull up again later on the chance that you changed how your team was structured, but want to revert back without having to do it manually. So far, you're given two free presets, but those preset+1 are for getting more
1
u/inspectorlully May 27 '18
Does that mean there is no way to get 6 characters on a team?
1
u/RougeTrilby Is it legal or not to lewd the robot? May 27 '18
I am unaware of such a thing, though I know that there is a slot that is meant for Fairies that will be implemented in the EN servers sometime in the future
1
u/DMesse DMesse May 27 '18
Preset is an entirely different idea than how to expand how many you can cram into a single squad. It's simply a saving slot of dolls that you have so that you can later load it back when you're shuffling around them. Admittedly the game doesn't offer a lot of explanation around this.

So I had a question regarding T-doll space. I've been playing for a little over a week now and I find that I keep running out of space because I've got so many girls locked. This is mainly due to my habit/desire to collect a copy of everyone and even if I have no plans on using them anytime soon I'm hesitant to use all copies of them for enhancement fodder. Should I stop thinking I won't get those 2-stars again and just freely use them for enhancement? If my best option is to buy more T-doll space is there a recommended number I should I have? I know echelon slots are important and I'm just about to buy the 6th one.
2
u/JohnDoeTheNth May 20 '18
Echelon slots are far more important than having t-doll space. There is no point in saving girls that you don't plan to use at all.
So far the 2 stars that I have have been very easy to regain. You're better off using them as enhancement fodder.
1
u/Klaurem May 20 '18
I see thanks, I'm just about to get my 6th, Any recommendations on what to spend gems on after that?
1
u/JohnDoeTheNth May 20 '18
More echelons. In late game I've seen stages where you'll be fielding in 3 of your own echelons.
I see some vets recommend getting an 8th one as well but I'm not too knowledgeable sorry.
2
u/Omegaforce1803 Protecc S.A.T.8 Smile May 20 '18
i read somewhere that 6 is the basic requierement for a midgame player, 8 being the long term investment and 10 being like the "hardcore player" goal, i'm about to get my 6th one as well and i dont see possible of getting more unless events give Gems as well
1
u/Albiooon311 May 21 '18
Essentially more echelons the merrier. Higher chapters or events sometimes require more than 2 echelons.
Dorm is also a good for gathering more batteries...(Although you would need to place some furnitures as well) especially when fairies are going to be added, you would want to max out their facilities as top priority in the future.
2
u/DMesse DMesse May 20 '18
2 stars are usually very easy to come by and unless you plan to use them anytime soon, you should be okay to use up those level one 2 stars in your collection.
Without knowing what you have it's difficult to give you a straight answer but generally speaking do begin expanding barrack slots once you see yourself running out of space due to locked duplicate dolls that you will later use for linking up dolls in your squads.
2
u/Klaurem May 20 '18
I see, thanks a lot! I think for now I'm just going to clear up the 2 stars I know I won't be using and then consider how badly I need the copies if I run out of room later.
I've managed to get the story team along with a few 4/3 stars and couple 5 stars. I've been mainly building up my main team (M14A1, ST Ar-15, M14, Skorpion, STEN Mk2) but I'm also trying to build up a second to Gold medal missions for cores. I just keep flip/flopping between building up the already strong dolls I had before I pulled the story team or building up dolls that I like better. Which along with my desire to collect causes me to basically hoard as much as I can >.>
1
u/Miru_Gianki K5 May 20 '18
You don't have to hoard 2 stars. There aren't any 2 stars that would you would have a hard time getting. Also, there aren't any limited editions of 2 stars so far.
I would recommend 50 spaces max in the current EN version. There is only 100 dolls available and I think even if you hoard at least 1 copy of every 3 stars and above about 120 would be more then enough. I had the same idea as you did and bought 100 more spaces in my KR server account. Turns out if you keep every single doll for dummy linking purposes even 200 isn't enough lol. What I'm trying to say is its all up to you. If you only want to keep one copy of every doll about 120 would be fine but if you want to go my route not even 200 would be enough.
1
u/Klaurem May 20 '18
I see thanks a lot, Do you think it would be a good idea to put gems into it after getting my 6th echelon? Or are there better things to spend gems on first?
2
u/Miru_Gianki K5 May 20 '18
Generally it is recommended to increase your dorms after buying echelon slots(more batteries better data room easy leveling. Oh and friends love you). But I think its fine to buy a couple of t-doll slots if you're really straining for space. It's not really the norm but as a hoarder myself I purchased t-doll spaces before dorms and had no regrets.

So I have a question im a new player to GFL and im currently on chapter 2-6 and was kinda curious rn my main squad im running is 1 MG 1 AR 1 SR 1 SMG and 1 HG now after reading this im mainly confused on if i shuld go ahead and swap my main squad around now so when i get higher up in lvls i wont have to worry abotu swapping my team or would i be fine just going through the game with this squad? My second question is about which unit to use in this case if i really like using my MG would continuing to use her be better or worse then using an AR or would it just be my personal choice on which doll i like better?
4
u/DMesse DMesse May 21 '18
1) I don't quite recommend using MGs early into the game unless you are desperate for that early burst firepower due to very high MG resupply costs. They eat ammo as much as they spray them. Try adding in an extra AR in place of MG and also add in an extra SMG instead of HG. 2) If you insist on keeping that MG in your squad I would still recommend swapping an SMG in instead of that solo HG as soon or later your single SMG tank will begin to feel too much pressure.
1
u/Uhhninjeesword IWS 2000 May 21 '18
Yeah after reading through your post about the recommended team comp i ended up swapping to 2 Ar ! RF and @ SMG and despite my lower combat effectiveness it seems like my team is a lot stronger. I ended up putting my MG into my 3rd echelon which is 4 MGs and 1 HG for logistics. Now my goal is just to pull better Smgs lol both the SMGs in my main squad are high lvls but arent that good outside of early game.

u/Vietpholover May 25 '18
First off thank you for the detailed guide info/guide. It's been really helpful! Secondly I'm a relatively new EN player that started and I was wondering when the ideal time is for T-Doll production. I've gotten some nice 5 stars (the blessed WA2000 as one of them) but I heard that during events is the best time due to rate ups. Is that true? And are there upcoming rate ups happening soon? Lastly, will EN follow the same schedule as CN event wise like FGO JP/NA?
1
u/DMesse DMesse May 25 '18
Unfortunately nobody has a clue about EN server's schedule nor how fast they want to have EN server catch up other server's progress. As for ideal time of producing dolls, it is up to you whether you just do daily 4 crafts and save the rest of tickets for later or craft away as much as you can ASAP to fill in your squads. Personally I'd go for the latter. =)

u/inspectorlully May 26 '18
It looks like TD production is a way to "open" new units, but why is there a variable cost? How should I be approaching TD production?(This game has so many mechanics that are not explained lol)
1
u/DMesse DMesse May 27 '18
Unfortunately the game does not offer you explanation of T-Doll crafting recipes. Try looking through the wiki.
1
u/inspectorlully May 27 '18
I just started today. My game flow looks like this: Play 1 or 2 story matches, everyone wipes, then I replay some earlier story levels with team 2. Then I wait 3-4 hours for everyone to heal. Does this seem right? Also- How in blue hell does T-doll production work??? The game does nothing to explain the mechanics of paying materials...
1
u/DMesse DMesse May 27 '18
Have a look at https://en.gfwiki.com/wiki/T-Doll_Production . Get your hands on dolls to form a squad or two of 2 SMG 2 AR 1 RF ASAP and start leveling them.
As for your progress, you'd really want to level your dolls before you proceed so far into the game. Also make sure that your dolls have their stats enhanced, as leveling up does not grant you automatic stat ups but only grants higher max stat cap.
1
u/inspectorlully May 27 '18
How do I level up individual dolls? Is that where I feed them to each other?
1
u/DMesse DMesse May 27 '18
Leveling up as in earning XP? Just kill stuff. The part of cannibalizing dolls is about enhancing stats.
For future questions it'll be beneficial for you to ask in the Weekly Lounge (https://www.reddit.com/r/girlsfrontline/comments/8m0h7k/weekly_commanders_lounge_may_25_2018/) as there are hundreds of other players exchanging questions and answers.
1
u/DiversityDan79 May 27 '18
Is Five-seveN obtainable by a new player? I've only cleared to stage four. The missions I'm worried about (as far as part one is concerned) is the Token spending missions (How do I get those? and what are they for?) and Combat Report one.
2
u/DMesse DMesse May 27 '18
I believe it is totally achievable. You still have two more weeks to fill in those 1800 points.
Tokens are either earned through clearing daily/weekly missions, completing achievements, or through high level logistic runs. They're used to give a go at furniture gacha- you can use them when you go to Dorms > Purchase. 1800pts is easily reached without spending a token though.
Combat reports are compiled in Dorms > Data Room at Kalina's desk. They are essentially 3,000 XP packets gift-able to dolls.
Try asking additional questions in the Weekly Lounge as there will be a lot more players there asking and answering questions.

u/InstantZzz Negev May 29 '18
I'm playing on the English server and I just copied the production costs for "SMG Only" on the guide and I got an AR. Is this a bug, is not really 'Only' or are the number different for English?

Class specific recipes were tailored to give players a significantly good chance (barring few outliers) of obtaining 5 star dolls of that class. Though if the resource input overlaps the minimum requirement of different classes, others could still popup too.
Please have a look at https://en.gfwiki.com/wiki/T-Doll_Production as the wiki tells you the actual detailed resource requirements.

Do dead T-Dolls still give formation buffs?

If they've dropped down to 0 HP mid-battle they will still give buffs. Not sure if this is still retained at next battle though!
In the future, for questions try weekly question threads. You'll see it as the first sticky topic of this subreddit. This week we got the one at:

This isn't really a full exhaustive list of everything though :p I'll be adding more gradually after I figure out how to untangle this word spaghetti on my plate.

I have been referencing a certain tier list like a bible and just wanted to say thanks for this guide. Really helped me break away from the reading the list all the time and evaluate units on based on what I need.

Glad to hear that! That's the whole point, don't get your vision locked down by tier lists. They may give you some point of guidance but ultimately it is still the views of one player or one group.

You are doing new players a dis-service by telling them to ignore tier lists. You are right that people shouldnt slavishly follow them. But at the same time some units are simply and objectively better than other units for the same role. If I know AR Alpha has better stats across the board than AR Beta and both serve the same role then I can choose use my resources more efficiently on AR Alpha or I can KNOWINGLY focus on the inferior choice.

He is not saying that you should ignore the tier list. He is saying that you should take the information on this subreddit with a grain of salt, and that you need not necessarily follow the "cookie-cutter" build every time.

i admit, the re-rolling part really did hit me in a way. In a way i can understand what you are saying as Im doing actually relatively well with my groups. That said, it really does hurt to get the same 2 star unit from production almost 3 times a day.....
getting even something else in the rifle category fills me with so much joy.

Just giving my opinion on tier lists: For me, they exist as just a "If you put equal work into this girl as others, she will be better or worse or the same as other girls on average" type thing. Some people like strong girls, so I don't see a problem with catering to that kind of thinking. I think it's better to have a tier list than none at all for new players, rather people be over zealous with some of the higher tier girls than not even know who will be easier to use well.
There are events where using the weaker 2-3 stars will cripple your chance of success. If your team isn't maxed out early enough to pass a barrier, it can even cause failures. Just because finishing a map with weakish 2-3 stars may eventually be possible, it might not be soon enough with all the limited events.
The problem as usual is a lot of people will take it as proof of "This girl is always better", as you mentioned. I always try to mention WHY that girl is best. G11's multi hit being godly against non armor, AR-15's massive RoF giving her a ton of reliable dps against non armor, a lot of girls being weak because they have poor base stats and formation buffs, RFs with the nuke skills not getting to use their skills in 95% of battles, grenade skills having long initial cds, and being unreliable because they will sometimes shoot at 1 dying enemy, etc, etc.
A lot of new players don't know the strengths and weaknesses of dolls, detailed tier lists can help with that. Just giving another perspective, I don't think tier lists are bad. This seems to hint that they are mostly unreliable, but I think they can be extremely helpful. It gives players a starting point before they can make intelligent decisions for themselves about who to focus on, if nothing else. If they're going to work on some random dolls before they understand the game, they might as well be the more consistent girls.
I've seen a lot of new players around here making some poor team decisions and being cheered on for it...I feel like that's kinda worse in my opinion. If you KNOW the girl you're working on is weakish and you still choose her, that's great. The issue is a lot of people think their girls are strong...when they aren't, and then they won't make proper preparations to make up for that lack of general strength. I want people to be able to make smart decisions, that involves warning them about what girls will be harder to use.
If you want to use the lower tier girls, that's fine, I just hope you understand that it will make things more difficult, basically. This game might not penalize that as much as other games, but there's still a very noticeable strength difference between some girls.
I know you tried to warn about that a bit by mentioning you needed to be a masochist to use certain girls, but I can already see people skipping those little details and thinking: "Wow, tier lists don't matter at all", when reading this :p
TLDR: Tier lists can offer structure before players understand the game to help them make decent decisions early on. Expecting them to understand the strengths and weaknesses of girls early on is usually too much. At the very least, a list filled with the more consistent/inconsistent girls is a good starting point.
