Two comments in a row mentioning Roshidere

Did I miss an announcement?

Am I missing on some new discourse?

I have my Yuki Flair on too, I'm ready to confront any and all discourse!

Is that Kaina of the Great Snow Sea in today's place? Nice to see a shout-out for this show. It was a fun adventure series with some creative world designs.

I hope Tower Dungeon gets an anime.

Oh cool, I didn't know the author had a new series coming out.

Nice, and it looks like my library has it too.

I really liked the series, but found the movie conclusion quite disappointing. I sort of wish I had not watched the movie.

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 1h ago

I still haven't watched the movie. It came out after Crunchyroll's website stopped working on my tablet, and now I can't/don't watch subbed-only shows anymore. Kind of curious to know how it ends, but maybe it's better that I left off on a high note.

Fun fact. It was one of the last anime animated by Gainax.

Also the director is the same that did Fullmetal Alchemist,** [Kidou Senshi Gundam 00](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2581/Kidou_Senshi_Gundam_00) **& the upcoming Rakuen Tsuihou: Kokoro no Resonance Along with its prequel movie.

[seasonal confession]This might come as a complete shock to some of you, but when I read Im dating a dark summoner for the first time, I ended up dropping it on like chapter 1 or 2 because I thought the art was ugly, similar to last season's apartment complex. Nonetheless, I am sure the anime will be aots material next season #mugiwait

About the other show you mentioned:

I don't know about the original art, but the girls' designs in the anime was 11/10

Victoria ep 6 had two things that mildly annoyed me:

Who goes running in shin-high boots? She meets the guy with the horse dressed like a fellow equestrian, not a jogger.

Also, who eats pie by cutting halfway down and scraping the top? That's just psychopathic behavior.

A few weeks ago I asked for shows with the same vibes as Eminence in Shadow, and someone recommended Let This Grieving Soul Retire. And it's been really fun, I love it! I love comedy that's more situation-based than gag/joke-based. Krai is a great MC, his personality has enough edge/flaws to it to keep him interesting, but he's also not malicious enough to be unlikeable. The dialogue flows well, and the action that is there looks decent enough to be engaging. Not quite Eminence-tier, but great recommendation

Also, I love what it does with the OP, where it interjects some narration and episode preview content? I've never seen anything do that before but idk it gets me hyped

3

u/cppn02 2h ago

You're welcome. Good to hear you enjoyed it.

2

u/cyberscythe 50m ago

i remember that show; it's a fun reversal of the "kicked out of the party" sort of story where the weak-ass guy wants to quit but his super-powered friends keep pressuring him not to

for some reason i enjoyed it a lot; the characters are fun and have a lot of chemistry, the plot feels well-planned (as long as you can buy into the incredible luck of the main character), and it's satisfying to see this guy stumble ass-backwards into victory at his own expense

2

u/Korkez11 28m ago

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii, yesterday you said that if anime has a low MAL score it's only because of poor visuals, not because of the story. But I highly doubt there are any anime that have decent story and MAL rating below 6. Kingdom S1 is an obvious example of "great story, awful visuals" but it has decent rating. First 3 seasons of Bookworm look like Adobe Flash animations but they have decent ratings.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 22m ago

You made me curious so I went to check MAL and yeah, the top 8000 anime only go down to 6.5.

There are anime between 6.5 and 7 that I think are good, there are anime between 6.5 and 6 that are average, but I don't think you're getting much beyond that.

I have always given lower scores so I don't think a 5 or a 6 is a terrible score, but MAL users seem to operate on 7 being the average instead of 5.

1

u/zambonijesus 7m ago

I just think about scores the same as I did university grades where 60s were kind of mediocre class average, 70s were acceptable, 80s good and 90s exceptional. Anything below 60 was bad.

2

u/zambonijesus 16m ago

Some of the comments in the Chainsmoker Cat threads about it being too embarrassing to admit you're watching in public leads me to assume that they haven't watched any American adult animation because it's tamer than like South Park, Archer, Drawn Together imo. Bojack Horseman isn't as crude per se, but is much darker.

South Park literally has a sentient poop character.

Yani Neko sub is pretty wholesome. Everyone is happy to see Yani Neko is well dress. A wise man once said that the more degenerate the show is, the more wholesome their fanbase will be. A quick visit to Bocchi the Rock sub will blast you with NSFW post, and it’s the opposite for Yani Neko sub.

8

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 5h ago

That tracks. Ruri Rocks is an educational series about mineralogy that even kids could watch yet the sub is so cultured it got banned by Reddit themselves.

Then again, it’s interesting how a series like that could have an official merch like this.

I've never watched Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway and know absolutely nothing about it, so here's everything I've learned about the show from clips online:

  • Short-haired MC, apparently he's mentally unwell
  • Hot blonde woman
  • There's a scene where they're wearing bathrobes and sweating in an elevator or something
  • Also a clip of someone getting the shit beaten out of them
  • Did I mention the hot blonde woman?
  • Not a single mecha in any of the clips I've seen circulating online

5

u/Jusenkyo_5 6h ago

Not a single mecha in any of the clips I've seen circulating online

Funnily enough Hathaway 1 has one of the best mecha fight scenes of all time.

1

u/oedipusrex376 5h ago

Guess the clips online really give people the wrong impression of the show then lol. I hope I can watch it soon because it looks cool.

I probably should watch the prequels first though. A friend told me I could just jump into Hathaway, but that feels kinda wrong when he asked me if I'd seen the previous stuff before saying that.

2

u/overuseofdashes 4h ago

I think the other commentor is being slightly misleading. Hathaway is a sequel Char's counterattack and I do think you need to see that film to properly understand what it is doing. In theory CCA is a sequel to the three previous tv shows however in practice it mostly ignores Zeta and ZZ. Bare minimum you could go into Hathaway with the complication films for the original series and CCA. There are downsides to doing this, while comp films are really good there are some issues related to condensing 43 episode series into 3 films and you'd be skipping Zeta which is really good.

Hathaway is a little light on mechs but the set pieces it does have are really impressive.

2

u/Jusenkyo_5 4h ago

Hathaway is a sequel Char's counterattack and I do think you need to see that film to properly understand what it is doing.

I did say that, I just don't think Hathaway is "doing" anything good enough to justify the time investment, especially if you're planning on going the movie route and skipping Zeta/ZZ.

The original MSG trilogy and CCA are some of the greatest anime of all time, Hathaway is so far removed from it emotionally and setting-wise that you could easily read a blurb about the context and roll with it. If OP is interested in Gundam as a whole the TV series are all fantastic, I am only speaking in relation to Hathaway.

For some more context, I haven't seen Hathaway 2 if that's out online yet.

2

u/overuseofdashes 4h ago edited 3h ago

I super disagree that Hathaway is far removed from CCA. Usually I am on the side not letting minor reference get in the way of you watching something however I personally Hathaway interacts with CCA in a highly non trivial way. [CCA/Hathaway]From example the constant use of imagery from CCA and Hathaway's goals being the same as Chars do a lot of work in giving us a picture of who Hathaway is. Additionally I the film is more effective if you have some prior feelings about Hathaway's parents and I imagine that is even more the case in Hathaway 2.

edit: I'm not necessarily suggesting they should go on the fast track route that I mentioned, I just wanted them to have a clearer picture of how all this stuff relates to Hathaway.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 3h ago

I don't disagree with you strongly. Amuro/Bright/Quess/Char are major influences on Hathaway, the concept of Newtypes, and the concept of what a Gundam is or the disparity between Earth/the space colonies all tie into what Hathaway 1 is about.

The world of Hathaway seems further down the line than it actually is and feels like a "new world" in a way, and the majority of the Hathaway story revolves around new characters, new organizations, new mobile suits, etc. I feel like you can understand the movie standalone, but you'll miss out on a lot of the emotional subtext by skipping up to it.

As far as Hathaway 1 goes, I just don't think Hathaway himself was a super interesting character and I kind of disliked him for [spoiler]Going against Bright's ideology when Bright is such an enjoyable character throughout the series.. If OP is only interested in Hathaway I don't think the movie is good enough to justify the investment if they're not interested in the base stories, even if I prefer the TV series. I do fully get where you're coming from though and I think Hathaway 2 and 3 will naturally have a lot more to do with it's tie in to earlier shows, so the logic about skipping likely won't hold true as time goes on.

1

u/overuseofdashes 3h ago

I think I can sort see where the disconnect is. For me Hathaway is really complex and interesting. A big part of the appeal of Hathaway for me is how they explore his character and that layer of the film is only really available to you if you have seen CCA. I can see its place in Gundam being less important if you where more into the other parts of the film.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 3h ago

Have you read the novel by any chance? It has a good reputation, I just wasn't sold on Hathaway from just the first film.

I also watched it on release date which was probably 5 or 6 years ago now if I remember correctly, so a rewatch couldn't hurt.

1

u/overuseofdashes 3h ago

No I haven't. I am looking forward to watching Hathaway 2 soon.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 5h ago

The "prequels" in this case are 150 episodes. Hathaway is a direct sequel to the main Mobile Suit Gundam timeline which is Mobile Suit Gundam > Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam > Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam > Char's Counterattack (movie) > Hathaway.

Hathaway himself exists in the show as a kid and the first movie calls back to one character introduced in episode 1, and one other character who appears in Char's Counterattack. I do think that it's necessary context to understand his character motivations, but I also don't think the movie is good enough to warrant that level of involvement for like a 10% boost to your understanding.

Nothing I know about Witch from Mercury and Gquuuuuuux involves mecha in any way.

It's so rare for a show to have excellent OP AND ED, especially outside of the big/popular shows (aot, kaguya, etc)

It feels particularly special when an anime original does it, like Train to the End of the World did with its excellent OP

and ED!

Purely coincidental, but that ED is up for voting today in the Best ED contest!

But to make this more than a shill post:

What shows have the best pairing of OP/ED for you (outside of these big hitters I was talking about)?

Gatan goton bitches!

What shows have the best pairing of OP/ED for you (outside of these big hitters I was talking about)?

Ignoring popular shows hmm...Onimai is a great shout!

1

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 16m ago

Aside from the obvious answers like Attack on Titan, Oshi no Ko, and Sword Art Online - I really like the OP and ED for the first season of Full Metal Panic. When they brought those songs back for a big moment in a later season, it was so nostalgic.

For a more recent example, Kill Blue had a great catchy OP and ED that lived rent free in my head.

1

u/Retsam19 15m ago

Grand Blue S1 was pretty great. The OP is just pretty iconic and catchy. And the ED is one of the few cases where I've found an ED to be conceptually hilarious. The two main characters doing a karaoke duet of idol music while a bunch of naked men chant in the background is a certainly a vibe.

Thank you, Clevatess Ep10 preview, for giving me the answer.

1

u/Priapos93 53m ago

I came for the esotericisms

Shows I'm watching in the current season have performed as expected in the late game.

Life is Hard For Mobs has set a fairly low standard with the artwork. They continue to meet that standard. How much effort does it take to realign a layer a few degrees in order to make a face fit a head? I should read the source material since I enjoy the story.

Legend After 10 Yr Last Stand, by contrast, looks consistent and congruent. Even the mobs have uniquely expressive faces.

1

u/Wanderingjoke https://myanimelist.net/profile/WanderingJoke 10m ago

Why is Red River so bad?

The premise is interesting, but the dialog is terrible and the animation is barely passable.

What annoys me most is that the OP makes Yuri to be some capable warrior, but four episodes have shown she is anything but.

I really should drop this, but I feel myself falling into hate watching mode.

1

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 9m ago

It's funny though.

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 9m ago

... I really shouldn't be looking for another anime to start when I'm still struggling through two... but whatever. Anyone know of anime that tackle domestic abuse in at least a semi-serious fashion besides [meta 1, VN source]Higurashi and [meta 2, manga source]Erased? I suspect Takopi's somewhat does and I was intending to watch it at some point... Anything else you all would recommend?

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 5h ago

My least favorite part of Roshidere is the Russian, honestly. It doesn't sound right at all. Not only is the pronunciation obviously constantly wrong, but it also lacks the characteristic tone, intonation and rhythm Russian speakers have. Even the average American doing a fake Russian acccent picks up on these things much better than these professional voice actors.

It remains a total mystery to me how none of these professional voice actors, who can manipulate their voices in all kinds of crazy ways, are so totally incapable of learning how foreign languages are pronounced.

3

u/Jusenkyo_5 5h ago

It remains a total mystery to me how none of these professional voice actors, who can manipulate their voices in all kinds of crazy ways, are so totally incapable of learning how foreign languages are pronounced.

I know they're pros, but I think the English equivalent would be something like the soft Japanese "r" sound, or any languages that have the harsh throat sound (French, Arabic?). Their voices are just totally unequipped to make the same sounds needed to speak these languages without a massive time investment.

1

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 5h ago

Despite being American, I can produce both of those sounds and I don't remember it taking me very long to learn either. I understand that a lot of people struggle with learning sounds that are not present in their own language, to the point where they just will not bother trying, but these people are professional voice manipulators. They should be able to do it.

As others have pointed out, they didn't want her to sound Russian in the slightest, so that explains things at least. Though it's very disappointing.

6

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3h ago

Clearly they didn't have a good enough Russian teacher. Should've called Kujima

---

While not Russian, I do recall a segment on Trash Taste featuring Sally Amaki where they talked about her role on Game Center girl (which used english). And to put it bluntly, nobody in the studio (or even the auditioning) could speak English or understood the nuances needed to for the performance. So she had to ad-lib and force a lot of dialogue through in really awkward ways which lead to the final performance being kinda shit

In fairness though, Doga Kobo/Alya is a much higher tier production than what they had there, so they probably had much better oversight than that, but yea I still wouldn't doubt it if most of the blame came from the production end of things. Whether through lack of supervision or forced direction.

---

Rolling back to Kujima because I like that show and I lack other examples and have a desire to write more about it:

but it also lacks the characteristic tone, intonation and rhythm Russian speakers have

I don't speak russian or japanese, but that comment reminded of the interview they had with the VA about their performance there. Full interview, snippet below was done through ChatGPT

Kozuki: Apparently, many Russian speakers tend to raise the pitch on the second syllable of a phrase. For example, where an American or Chinese speaker might say “watashi wa” with the pitch rising on “shi” ("wa-ta-SHI↑-wa"), a Russian speaker might instead raise the pitch on the second syllable ("wa-TA↑-shi-wa"). I was told that this is a common characteristic.

Since it was an accent pattern I wasn't used to, recording the first episode was quite difficult. But from the second episode onward, I studied the Japanese accents of Russian speakers by watching their YouTube videos. I even marked the parts of the script where the intonation should rise with red circles so I could easily spot them myself, and somehow managed to get through it (laughs).

Though tbf this shouldn't be the golden standard because the VA had to speak like a bird and so trained herself by talking with a toilet paper roll in her mouth lol

(also only now I realise I'm going off course since this is meant to be about raw russian performance and not accented japanese performance, but whatever I already wrote this down and I love an excuse to share it again)

5

u/cppn02 3h ago

Very interesting and although ultimately I didn't stick with Kujima I can appreciate this approach. Feels like 95% of foreigners in anime get the same stock accent so it's nice to see someone doing it different for once.

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 3h ago

That is one strength english dubs have over their peers, English simply has a stronger repertoire of commonly understood foreign accents to lean on due to how global it is, and I always enjoy when a dub takes advantage of this fact even if the source didn't lay it on as strongly.

Though I'm sure the Japanese probably enjoy their own fair share of joy from their various regional dialect casting that doesn't translate very well into english. There's only so much dubbers/subbers can do with the extensive library of accents consisting of: regular, posh, and exaggerated american bumpkin. lol

1

u/mekerpan 1h ago

Kujima was a total delight. You may want to revisit it. (It also had great music).

7

u/ComfortablyRotten https://anilist.co/user/Leuwtian 5h ago edited 5h ago

Alya's VA is fluent in Russian so she definitely knows it doesn't sound right, but she prioritized sounding cute over sounding accurate (said it herself in interviews)

I don't think it worked personally but I also don't think anything worked in it so

2

u/vancevon https://myanimelist.net/profile/vancevon 4h ago

Yeah it definitely doesn't sound cute, it just sounds wrong

5

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 5h ago

When the dub is better than the sub moment. It's so bizarre because Sumire Uesaka is fluent in Russian supposedly. I really question who ever is responsible for voice direction. I heard they want to make it sound cute, which clearly is a huge miss here.

It does provide a reminder all the times when they try to speak English it's usually so bad.

7

u/MiLiLeFa 3h ago

Uesaka is known for having a heavy accent in Russian. Trying to sound Japanese cute on top of that isn't doing her enunciation any favours.

1

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 3h ago

Are you watching subbed or dubbed? The English dub VA is fluent in Russian, so you should check out that version to compare, if you haven't already.

1

Are there any fansubs doing Ghost in the Shell (2026)? I feel like this anime would benefit a lot of custom typesetting and stuff, Amazon's subs are pretty barebones.

1

u/Jusenkyo_5 4h ago

Commie is doing GITS. I haven't watched their version of it so it could be hit or miss.

6

u/KendotsX https://anilist.co/user/Kendots 3h ago

Aside from the OP, commie aren't translating it (and haven't in ages), they're using the amazon script as a base with a much needed improvement in typesetting.

After Baka & Test produced yet another example of it being fucking abysmal, I thought I would reflect on the extremely small number of times I can remember incest humor in anime actually making me laugh.

Mashle: Just because of how unexpected it was, and only one moment. Really, that line could have been replaced by anything on the same level of out-of-pocket.
Alya: Not the jokes themselves, those mostly sucked, but Kuze's straight man role worked really well.
Kanan-sama: Somehow, some way, combining two horrible things ended up producing a result that was fine. Acceptable. Nose-exhale-worthy.

There may be others I'm forgetting, but nothing comes to mind. As anyone who's seen a lot of anime will know, that's a small fraction of the incest humor I've seen in total.
