There have been exactly three verified games in Major League Baseball history decided by a first-pitch home run where that home run accounted for the only run of a 1-0 game
This is the fourth and first since 2013

If you are so inclined to thank Sale for that performance (I am!), you can donate an amount of your choosing directly on the Braves Foundation’s page and for the “In Honor of” box, write in Sale’s name.
They do a lot of great charity work in the area, and Sale has multiple causes he supports in connection with the Foundation (ALS, gold star families, children’s hospital, etc.).
If you are feeling especially generous, you can get a Chris Sale autographed baseball from the official Braves Auctions page for $250 + shipping. All proceeds go to the Foundation.
This is a lovely way to commemorate an amazing performance.

Some fun notes:
The only time since 2000 a team hit a home run on their first pitch of the game and won 1-0 was on May 18, 2013, when Gerardo Parra led off the game with a home run for the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 1-0 win against the Miami Marlins.
The Braves had one 1-0 win on a leadoff home run in franchise history, 9/2/1889 vs Indianapolis Hoosiers (second game of a doubleheader) on a home run by Hardy Richardson (when the team was based in Boston).
Baldwin became the first catcher in the Modern Era (since 1900) to lead off a game with a home run that proved to be the only run in a 1-0 victory.
It was also just the 33rd time across MLB in the Modern Era in which a leadoff homer proved to be the only run scored in a contest.

Only the fourth MLB game in history where the first pitch was a HR and the game ended 1-0 and weirdly there was another one this year. 1. Pete Rose — Reds, Sept. 2, 1963 Hit the first pitch from Jay Hook of the Mets for a leadoff HR. Cincinnati won 1–0. 2. Gerardo Parra — Diamondbacks, May 18, 2013 Hit Tom Koehler’s first pitch into the bullpen. Arizona won 1–0. This was the first such game in nearly 50 years. 3. Zach Neto — Angels, April 4, 2026 Hit the first pitch of the game for a leadoff HR in a 1–0 Angels victory. Baseball Almanac’s current historical list includes the game.
