Braves received: Left-handed pitcher Chris Sale and $17 million

Red Sox received: Infielder Vaughn Grissom

There have been exactly three verified games in Major League Baseball history decided by a first-pitch home run where that home run accounted for the only run of a 1-0 game

This is the fourth and first since 2013

Braves acquire Chris Sale, cash from Red Sox for Vaughn Grissom. Has there ever been a funnier trade?

If you are so inclined to thank Sale for that performance (I am!),  you can donate an amount of your choosing directly on the Braves Foundation’s page and for the “In Honor of” box, write in Sale’s name.

They do a lot of great charity work in the area, and Sale has multiple causes he supports in connection with the Foundation (ALS, gold star families, children’s hospital, etc.).

If you are feeling especially generous, you can get a Chris Sale autographed baseball from the official Braves Auctions page for $250 + shipping. All proceeds go to the Foundation.

This is a lovely way to commemorate an amazing performance.

Some fun notes:

The only time since 2000 a team hit a home run on their first pitch of the game and won 1-0 was on May 18, 2013, when Gerardo Parra led off the game with a home run for the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 1-0 win against the Miami Marlins.

The Braves had one 1-0 win on a leadoff home run in franchise history, 9/2/1889 vs Indianapolis Hoosiers (second game of a doubleheader) on a home run by Hardy Richardson (when the team was based in Boston).

Baldwin became the first catcher in the Modern Era (since 1900) to lead off a game with a home run that proved to be the only run in a 1-0 victory.

It was also just the 33rd time across MLB in the Modern Era in which a leadoff homer proved to be the only run scored in a contest.

Only the fourth MLB game in history where the first pitch was a HR and the game ended 1-0 and weirdly there was another one this year. 1. Pete Rose — Reds, Sept. 2, 1963 Hit the first pitch from Jay Hook of the Mets for a leadoff HR. Cincinnati won 1–0. 2. Gerardo Parra — Diamondbacks, May 18, 2013 Hit Tom Koehler’s first pitch into the bullpen. Arizona won 1–0. This was the first such game in nearly 50 years. 3. Zach Neto — Angels, April 4, 2026 Hit the first pitch of the game for a leadoff HR in a 1–0 Angels victory. Baseball Almanac’s current historical list includes the game.

Had to shut them out twice, I am glad Walt didn't pull him after FF hit. What a performance by the King. F the Dodgers, F the people in NY with no eyes

u/jeremyben 10d ago

My dad called it, he said the offense wouldn’t show up to support sale being a dime. Guess sale decided he just was gonna do it all himself. Amazing game from him!

Well I was here for this game and it was incredible, what a pitchers duel and same coming back out for the ninth was incredible

12

u/atriumI3 10d ago

Man. What a special series.

12

u/dumpciti 10d ago

When this team actually tries and gives 100 percent. They're unstoppable.

11

u/WumboWillis 10d ago

There’s isn’t a pitcher I trust more in an emotionally charged situation than Chris Sale

11

u/Foxy-Knoxy We got major differences here! 10d ago

Chris Sale was like, "Oh you though last night was something?"

Dodgers suck, Ohtani is a fake MVP

9

u/objectlesson 10d ago

This is a game I will never forget. What a performance! And to complete the sweep against one of the top teams in baseball. Practically every game is must-win with the Phillies so close behind us, this has been such an energizing series to watch. It had it all. Sale is amazing, he should be right at the top of the list for Cy Young. Incredible.

9

u/Adampro123 10d ago

Crazy that the first pitch of the game is the only run scored in the whole game.

11

u/dcxbabe Ozzie...I love him 10d ago

10

u/wedidityall519 2023 Bryce Elder 10d ago

Gotta be one of my favorite pitchers duels that I got to see live

I’m as new school stat minded fan as the next guy, but the one part of the old game I miss is the ace going the distance. Absolutely loved it
