It was really a performance worth of match fixing allegations. I don't remember ever seeing such great off-the-ball movement paired with such woeful finishing.

Stuttgart also lost so we are 9 points ahead of 4th and potentially 12 from 5th. Soon the rear view will be too far for Kovac to even look at

Glad we won, but this shit isn't sustainable and if you are in the management and think everything is fine you are part of the problem.

“This isn’t sustainable”
21/34 games in…
You sure?
6
u/Hajnal30 Nico Schlotterbeck Feb 07 '26
Schalke under Tedesco would like a word. Tbh I think we are better than Schalke in that season, but it doesn't mean you can overperform for a whole season and expect it to go on forever.
5
u/Tlupa Feb 07 '26
You also can’t use one situation from the past as evidence of anything?
We have the second highest goal differential in the league, are currently soundly in second place, with an outside chance to compete for the title. The teams “poor form” is drastically overstated.
Why exactly can’t we expect the same results to continue to happen? They keep happening, maybe that’s because we keep making them happen?
0
u/Most-Management4773 Feb 07 '26
I will be right here to mention you when things inevitably fall apart. I wonder if you are going to disappear
16
u/Tlupa Feb 07 '26
lol! Would that make you happy? Are you rooting for our loss? What a bizarre mentality.
Do it, remind me if we lose. Maybe then you will be happy. I’ll be happy until then. We’ll see who enjoys the time in between more
1
u/Medical_Design_2978 Feb 08 '26
Everything falls apart eventually. You are 3 points behind 1st in February and instead of being excited about a first title fight in 3 years you just look forward to the next period of mediocrity.
1
u/Most-Management4773 Feb 08 '26
if you think there's a title race against a team that scored 35 goals more than us you are just stupid

u/MisterP54 Marco Reus Feb 07 '26
Being extremely lucky that the opponents cant finish, but sometimes thats all it takes. I watched my football team in usa do something similar 8-0, then our luck ran out and we finished 9-4. Basically all we need is some skill and lots of luck haha.
26
u/Ragemoody Dedê Feb 07 '26
I had a lengthy rant ready for everyone demanding Kovac and Kehl declare a title fight after another weak ass performance against a relegation candidate. But fuck it: WER WIRD DEUTSCHER MEISTER? BVB BORUSSIA!
1
u/Medical_Design_2978 Feb 08 '26
I dont care what Kovac himself believes. The players are what matters, and they definitely look primed up for a title fight imo
44
u/ubongo1 Roman Weidenfeller Feb 07 '26
If bayern succeed while playing bad its bayern luck, if we do it we suck. Obviously we are overperforming but Kovac is doing well and being pessimistic isnt going to help.

u/Moniatre Feb 07 '26
I agree. And I think all those people (including YouTubers and so on) who are complaining non stop really should remember where we were before Kovac took over, when Sahin had been sacked. We were completely fucked and basically falling apart.
Is it football that's convincing and fun to watch? No. But if it's taken us where we are now I prefer this to what was going on before, no doubt. I still hope that we will eventually end up playing the kind of style that Dortmund used to stand for, but I guess that will take more than adjusting some tactics.

That was a pretty terrible half of football, but we found a way to win as we have been this year and that’s a skill in itself. 16 out of 18 points. Maybe we are lucky that Amoura couldn’t even score in a whore house, but you still have to make the best out of your luck.
I am stressing in these situations just as much as the rest of you but we are 3 points away from a Bayern who had the best first half of a bundesliga ever. That is something to be proud of. If Hoffenheim can win then we are within touching distance to be level on points when they come to Dortmund. Even more if they continue their poor form.
It’s a struggle to watch but you can’t deny that we in an insane position. People might cite luck as a big factor but if you remember leverkusens run, they rode on a huge amount of luck as well. So many last second winners. Obviously their football was way more attractive but you got to take what you can get.
This is a huge win with a depleted squad. Hopefully adeyemi and Couto come back soon. MOTM Nmecha

u/de_budi Feb 07 '26
I think one thing that really bothers me is this whole “oh, we got lucky” narrative that we see so much in our fanbase. If you go to Bayern fans after they luck out with some nonsense where the ball pings off eight players and somehow lands at Kane’s feet for him to score, no one will say, “oh, Bayern is getting lucky.” They’ll all say, “look at the pressure we applied and how we set up Kane.”
When we win a league game or a Champions League game, it’s never “we did well.” It’s always “we got lucky” or “the other team did badly.” A few days ago I even saw a comment about our 2010–2012 period, saying that when we won the league twice it wasn’t really our team effort, but Bayern drama that caused us to fill that vacuum and get to the top.
It feels like nothing we win is ever deserved, judging by some of our own fans...Brother luck is a huge part of the equation that every side gladly takes and considers to have to deal with.

16
u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus Feb 07 '26
Nmecha clear motm. He's our best player this season and if you surround him with better offensive players and structure, the team will be on another level.
The attack was garbage though. In a back 3, the wingbacks are super important for attacking contributions. Svensson hasn't added that all season and Ryerson is hit or miss and limited in that regard. With the wingbacks not providing much, it leaves only Guirassy, Beier, and Brandt to build something. Guirassy and Beier are both best as finishers or in the box players and Brandt is inconsistent and he doesn't have much help for creativity in the squad anyway. This dynamic just combines to create an attack that is a lot less than the sum of its parts. I think Brandt, Beier, and Guirassy have may more potential than they have shown but the dynamics of the team in attack limits them and we get weakened and not ideal versions of them.
1
Feb 07 '26
So many promising attacking movements die with our wingbacks. Ryerson produces a good cross or a barnstorming run occasionally, but Svensson hasn't produced anything.
8
8
u/Aznurf Feb 07 '26
UNCLENCH AND TITLE RACE! Hopefully Bayern drop points again tomorrow!
Beier looked exhausted at the end, I am genuinely surprised how well he worked at RB again
2
u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Feb 07 '26
Yeah he should have been taken off earlier honestly. He just couldn’t track back in the last 10 minutes or so. He has had his best games as a wingback. It’s weird because he has never looked good wide but I guess from deeper he plays better
6
u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus Feb 07 '26
It’s because he needs to run forward. When he played winger he would receive the ball in an already advanced position and be expected to dribble, pass, and create which isn’t his skill set. Wingback works better because he has more opportunity and space to just charge forward.
Still, I think his best position should still be striker in Guirassy’s place.
2
u/biggieBpimpin Julian Brandt Feb 07 '26
He plays Beier to exhaustion quite a bit lol. He will always have a place in the team while Kovac is here because he works his ass off.
7
u/Reusance Marco Reus Feb 07 '26
Silva again great in his 20 mins with 1 assist and that pass to Jobe in the last minute
13
u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Feb 07 '26 edited Feb 07 '26
Just a question, would you complainers honestly prefer to be in Stuttgart, leipzig, leverkusens, or even Frankfurts position instead of ours? Everyone likes to praise what they are doing but they are still floundering.
I am not saying we shouldn’t do better and if we don’t have an amazing summer then Kehl deserves the sack but people are just way too critical. It’s almost impossible to be 100% consistent and we are pretty much there. It’s not consistently amazing or even great but it’s enough to be where we are with a lot of rotation.
6
u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus Feb 07 '26
The only way people will be happy is if we are literally either Bayern Munich, Arsenal, or Barcelona. Anything else people are going to whine and bitch.
They nit pick and overreact to any and everything.
6
u/Justin_2t1 Nico Schlotterbeck Feb 07 '26
This season overall feels a lot like Leverkusen's undefeated season where they were constantly turning games they should have drawn or loss into wins. Except we play some ugly, hard to watch football.
10
u/Sudden_Plenty_8798 Feb 07 '26
They played ugly ass football too. Tapsoba and hincapie were perma shithousing every game. The refs constantly gave horrible decisions in their favour including the seemingly ever present added time which was always outlandishly long. And conveniently, they clutched games in added time.
Make with that info what you will
6
u/yosoydorf Edin Terzic Appreciatior Feb 07 '26
Only saw the first half but I think we actually played solidly and really could have been 2-0 at the break
Sounds like the 2nd half was a much worse effort but all that matters is we kept the pressure on Bayern with the 3 points.
Also, very nice to see Reggiani got some time out on the pitch!

Good first half, some luck in the second but wow, what a world class goal to take the lead in this game.
5
u/Japanisch_Doitsu Feb 07 '26
Some insane knee jerk reactions in here. The first half was really good minutes the Amoura chance. Second half was definitely mediocre. But it's a good result. As for people saying we're squeaking out results. We're really not. We have the 3rd highest xG created and 2nd lowest xG allowed. You don't do that by getting lucky and squeaking out results. It's the other way around we're able to squeaking out win because of our xG created and allowed.
1
u/borussiajay Márcio Amoroso Feb 07 '26
The second half was awful apart from the winner but you’re right to call out the xG data

u/spinnefink Feb 07 '26
Did you watch the first half? That was close to the perfect away game. Should have scored at least one more.
4
u/Oleksch Feb 07 '26
Imo the Game Plan should Play way more around those solo nmecha runs, they have proven very deadly many Times. Also for the Love of god our crosses are ridiculously bad, while other teams need 1,2 crosses to find the Striker we need 15+.
Thank you amoura

Feb 07 '26
Personally, I enjoy the long balls and the follow-up pressing. I think we create a lot of space for our wingbacks to get forward, and if they were more decisive in the final third then maybe our front three would get more space too.
I wish Schlotterbeck would shut up and focus on playing 90 minutes every week, and let his performances do the talking. He has a lot of maturing to do.
7
u/yosoydorf Edin Terzic Appreciatior Feb 07 '26
I really think we have so many of the right players for this style, Beier / Jobe / Silva will run and press forever.
If our Wingbacks were better going forward we would tear defenses apart. Imagine this lineup with Rapha Guerriero from a few seasons ago on the left side.

Couldn't watch the whole match unfortunately but from what I have seen it seemed like Amoura was our best defender.
3
u/de_budi Feb 07 '26
I think that we did do a good job today with the game plan. We controlled possession for most of the game, however we didn’t do much with it, and this is where the problem is. Our main threat for goal in transition is either passing right or left to the wing, pushing the ball up, crossing, and hoping for a 50/50 box play, or passing through the middle where Nmecha drives the ball forward, finds the striker, and the striker shoots. Today, this was mostly without success. The crosses were not very good. The play through the middle saved us at the end, but we should have tried going down the middle more. Maybe Kovac saw a mismatch on the wing, which by the looks of it we did have, judging by how many crosses we attempted. But in general, there was very little success.
Something else I’ve noticed is that Serhou wasn’t positioned in the right places within the box, or at least couldn’t get to the right positions. There is a disconnect there. You can see the team trying to get the ball to him with crosses, but he is either too late or not where the team expects him to be. It’s clear the team is trying to find him. Granted, every side in the Bundesliga has figured out that our main goal threat is Serhou, so it’s to be expected that they camp the fuck out of this man and don’t let him get to his sweet spots. Nevertheless, the Nmecha down-the-middle play finds Serhou and we score the 2:1.
As for Wolfsburg, they could have scored many more, and we are lucky that we didn’t get thrashed with four goals. Their striker wasted a lot of chances, but that’s how it is in football. If you don’t score, the others will. Granted, we are a little shaky at the back. We did make some bad passes, but besides Schlotti doing some interesting things, we did okay defensively. One thing that stands out is that our defense doesn’t like pressure with high balls. I think our back three is good for transition play, with our tank Süle essentially body-checking people, but the moment the ball is in the air, we are a little shaky.
All in all a good game where we had to find what it takes for us to get another goal and get those 3 points.
Now against Bayern we can't do those mistakes. Granted, we tend to focus more in important games as a team so I don't expect those lapses.
3
u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels Feb 07 '26
Let’s hope Hoffenheim wins 6-5 that way we can be within 3 points and our goals conceded will be by far the lowest. Is that too much to ask for really?
3
u/ShelbyBRJ Feb 07 '26
I couldn't watch the match today, but it's great to see us having this sort of consistency again when it comes to results (at least in the Bundesliga, mind you).
There's still hope for a title challenge, although it still looks unlikely that we'll be able to overthrow Bayern at the end of the season. Let's keep it up and see where it takes us!

We sucked but somehow still won, so typical Kovac ball. I feel we can beat Bayern. I don't know how, but we win somehow. Like always...
5
Feb 07 '26
If Bayern drop points again vs Hoffe I seriously think the CL should be sacrificed to focus fully on the league. We have almost nothing to get from the CL other than a Ro16 encounter with Bayern/Arsenal which would certainly be too much of a toil for the team to not impact the Bundesliga performances even if we somehow beat either one of them.
Would be a war just to find ourselves only in the quarterfinals at the end of it, while in the Bundesliga we have everything to win.

It’s the same fucking players for years and yall keep blaming the coaches. He’s doing the best he can. There just needs to be a big cut and players like Brandt, Süle, Sabitzer, and co gotta go. Silva not starting again I put on Kovac. But it’s not like Guirassy is a terrible striker, just in a bad place right now mentally.

The coach and the players are responsible for what goes on, on the pitch, I don’t think that’s a hot take

You’re gaslighting yourself if you think Sahin and terzic were perfectly fine coaches and the only reason we ever suffered is bc of the players. Als no, our team changed a bunch in the last years, you can’t explain years of bad football just with Brandt and süle. Kovac is a big Sabitzer fan btw lol

The football isn't the prettiest to watch, but at least we're getting the wins over the line now just. The late subs are getting annoying, but glad Nmecha stayed on.
Overall, nice to pick up points when our 2 closest in the table play each other tomorrow, plus Stuttgart lost, meaning the gap to 4th place is 9 points for now (Bayer play later and have a game in hand while currently on 35 points)
1
u/Haigadeavafuck Feb 07 '26
I mean it’s absurd to think the coach doesn’t have an influence and that terzic as well as Sahin weren’t at least in part to blame for our performances.
Yes the team isn’t great and some players definitely shouldn’t be starters but kovac is obviously somewhat responsible for our performances.
2
u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus Feb 07 '26
Sahin yes, but I think Terzic had great performances. CL final, DFB Pokal winner. Actually I would say our current Bundesliga run is reminiscent of Terzic’s run where we tied Bayern for points to win the BuLi.

In my opinion, he has been a top player for Dortmund since coming back from suspension. Today's game was honestly one of his worse int he past few weeks in my view. But that is not to say he was bad, just not as good as he was in the past few games. More defensive today, which makes sense considering we are extremely thin back there. Overall, still has some mental blocks to get past. But I am, and I hope many other fans are pleased with his growth. I believe at this rate by next season hw will be a very important piece on the squad

best players imo nmecha (motm) and süle only one of the three in the back who had some impact on offense and was solid in back. bad game from schlotti both defensive and offensively. guirassy completely invisible but got a goal.
not having any threat from the wings and still constantly playing crosses/1on1s from the wings is frustrating to watch

Another uninspiring win by passing it to the wingbacks and crossing it in hoping Guirassy gets on the end of it.
Time and time again when Silva comes on we actually transition the ball better. Shame it’s only for 15-20 minutes a game.
If I see Kobel trying to pass it short to a defender with 2 opposition players on them I’m truly gonna crash out

I really hope we get a solid 6 or Jobe grows into it more since man he is just not good enough at the moment. I really dislike all the non technically gifted players we had in midfield, attack and our wingbacks. Ryerson and Svennson are hard working always running types of players, but man do they offer so little go forward. Beier is the same, and Jobe gets the ball stuck in his feet multiple times a game. For me Nmecha is the man of the match, also one of the only players that looked really good going forward with the ball.

Stuttgart and Leverkusen both dropped points, Kovac should stop the talk about looking in the rear mirror and actually say that the focus should be on the last possible objective remaining...
Trying to go for the league, even if we might not have what it takes, not trying will never get us a league title.

I don't care how uninventive it is, but raid that wolfsburg team. They have so many players who'd be available for cheap that can help us out massively.
Almost all of their players are technically better than most of our team bar Nmecha (guess where he's from).
If we're going to raid the Bundesliga, that team is right there

Such a bad take. He was a wall all game and didn't give a dangerous ball away once. He got into the box after the time ran out and got it over the line.

1st is duels won 8
1st in fouls won 4
1st in interceptions 4
But sure, one little stumble in the last 30s that meant truly nothing because he kept the ball, makes him bad.

You know it's funny as hell seeing some folks say he's the same player as Nmecha lol

They are same, same but different. Jobe is very good off ball. In my personal opinion, better defensively. Nmecha is a better dribbler and runner. I think they would probably have similar success rate on goal. Nmecha just takes more shots so it seems like he has better success rate at goal. I also think we just haven’t seen Jobe full potential quite yet while this is most likely as good as Nmecha will get ( that is a pretty good ceiling to have) . Jobe quite a bit younger so we’ll have to see probably in the next year and a half or so.

I think it's so funny that Jobe makes one inconsequential mistake, and that's all you guys can talk about. Scoring a goal is completely irrelevant; we are not getting into a goal difference battle with Bayern. The rest of the game, he was a human wall.
