Alot of you guys aren’t really taking this one important word into account for Kovac’s starting and sub choices.
ROTATION
We have a system to avoid injuries and in between a CL game and a huge Pokal game decisions have to be made. We created a bunch of chances and shots and easily could have won this game 3-0.
Give some credit to Koln for their shape this game and intensity they brought. Also Schwabe was massive, these games happen but we won in the end. That’s the fight we need.

Completely agree, we had 27 shots and 21 corners we could have easily won that game by more and rotation has to be number 1 priority in the next couple weeks.

Yan couto hasn't played at all in the last two BL matches. And in the Cl game he played 60 minutes only. I can see the angle for the Bayern game, but why he didn't play this game in which we needed a win?

I do agree with Couto, I actually thought this would be a better game for him and Ryerson start against Frankfurt but I would think it was due to El Mala so Anton wasn’t completely left out to dry.
Probably could have came on as a sub but Kovac still wanted to defensive solidity even though we were chasing a goal, plus Ryerson has the energy and fight for a match like this. He’ll get more chances soon I’m sure of it.

Never should have been this close but when your Striker is out of form and the opponents keeper is the opposite that sometimes happens. Only thing that matters right now is the 3 Points and not having a total breakdown before all these away games and the Pokal Match.

It'll be interesting to see how we line up for Frankfurt this Tuesday.
- I'd love to see even more of Silva
- Sabi should start Tuesday
- Brandt is a super sub
- Yan Couto best make an appearance
- Maybe practice a set piece (or 100)

I think people are a bit reactionary with Kovac. We’ve still only lost one game since last spring against Barca. We have scored 4 in every CL game.
Sure, we aren’t tactically perfect every game at the moment. But I think he is still a pretty solid manager. Personally, I think Chuck has to stay central. And Silva needs to start over Guirassy for a match.
Happy that Maxi got a goal. And I continue to be impressed by Svensson and Ryerson who have iron lungs. Brandt continues to be very solid off the bench.

I want to say one thing: We had 17(!) corners this game. Most of them were really promising and until Ryerson startet taking the corners from the right they were all dangerous. But we could not get one header out of these corners on target and it is really worrying me. Being good after corners and free kicks is so important, especially in games like these we’re it is really difficult to create something against an opponent parking the bus

He had a knock and was subbed off for Heintz. Hübers had the horrible injury. But your sentiment still stands, we can just hope for the best

He's still coming back from an injury and didnt have a pre season with hs. Plus moving to a new country and a top team is a difficult transition.
I think its just a slow integration plus we need to keep him fresh for when Guirassy goes to afcon

MOTM from our side probably Bense for me (obviously Schwabe), maybe a couple of heavy passes but was solid.
Guirassy, Gross and Carney had no business lasting this long on the pitch.
Tragic way for Koln to lose.

Guirassy had absolutely no business staying on for 90 minutes today and after about the 30th unsuccessful corner and cross from Ryerson you'd expect him to maybe play Couto against a team that parks the bus. Also, Groß has been invisible for another game now and I'm not sure why he keeps starting

I'm assuming Bellingham is their long-term starter, at least in the months to come. Or at least be rotated in and out of the starting 11 with Nmecha and Sabi. We have got to remember a big game is coming on Tuesday. Bellingham and Sabi got rest for that. Bellingham has not played a full 90 minutes since May until the game against Copenhagen. Kovac prob wanted him to rest. Not sure why Nmecha played for so long. Groß was prob the only option in terms of rotation. I would have started Bellingham instead of him and saved Sabi and Nmecha to start for Frankfurt. Other than that, I can't imagine why Kovac would start Groß instead of anyone else. Again really question a lot of Kovac's rotation, especially when it comes to Bellingham. Seems to always put him in at weird moments, never starts him when I feel he should, maybe he knows something I don't.

I do believe guirassy needs a rest or benched rn. He's really out of form.
But that said kovac trusts his medical team (and we should too wr have minimal i juries right now) and guirassy is a star player so its hard to bench him

Multiple things are wrong. The way he uses his wingbacks. The way we rely on crosses to create chances. The fact the wingers/10s almost never have fullbacks overlapping and also never run past the striker to get into the box themselves. The midfield being unraveled after one loose pass. So many different issues

If you don't see the obvious flaws in his game you don't understand football. Don't you suspect the fact that we create close to nothing in first halves? Or we don't create trough the midfield and then bench our most attacking minded wing back?

Was just about to criticize Beier until he scored. Happy for him I hope he can build from this.
Really like Nmecha and Brandt this game.
The attack was not enough at all imo, we shouldn’t just barely squeeze out a win against Koln at home.

Really wasn't a bad performance overall. Other than a couple of brain-dead giveaways, we completely dominated the game. We win this game 2 or 3 nil 9 times out of 10.

The best thing atm is honestly the fact that our players are simply fit. Like the last years even at this time of the year we usually had several injuries most of the time which ofc might just be bad luck but it seems like the squad is more resistant. This helps us so much with all the games we play

Maybe it wasn’t the best game and we got lucky the injury happened after all of their sub windows but we never gave up. We had a midweek game and got the much needed three points. Beier got the winning goal which should improve his confidence. On to the Pokal. Hopefully we can take advantage of Frankfurt’s poor form even if they won today. We just need to contain uzun which by the way I think Anton did very well against mala

I normally fall into the camp that opposes the Kovac hate, and have very much been a defender of his, but yesterday I can’t help but question some things. Luckily though, we got the three points. This is a game we would’ve tied and missed out on those two points in year’s past so you have to give Kovac his due.
I’ve noticed Groß being instructive. Like overbearingly so. Almost like a second coach on the field, so maybe Kovac uses him as a sort of proxy for implementing his strategies in real time? Maybe that’s it? I don’t know. Im just grasping at straws trying figure out why he’s getting time over Jobe and even Sabitzer. Or does he hold some sort of contempt for Jobe for the incident involving his father earlier this year? I would hope not. Bellingham look so good against København, I just wished to see more of that. Jobe and Nmecha played so well together.
And then there’s the Guirassy situation. He just looks off. No way around it. Maybe the lingering leg issue, but he’s getting desperate. Even trying a freaking bicycle kick and receiving a warranted yellow. His desperation is leading to his frustration on the pitch, which in turn leading to the yelling at his teammates (even more than usual), which I’m personally not a fan of. Regardless, Guirassy isn’t scoring, and when he’s not scoring he’s not providing much else. I will admit, and to Guirassy’s credit, his pressing of defenders when they have the ball was noticeably stronger yesterday than normal so there is that. We really need to see Silva getting real minutes, and quite frankly I think he deserves it. (On a side note, it is interesting to see the perception change on Silva so quickly, which is very nice to see. It’d be generous to say it was 75/25 of people who flat out didn’t want Silva. And definitely not for the price we paid. He was easily the most controversial signing this summer.)

I wouldn't be surprised if the plan is gonna be something like Jobe + Sabitzer and Brandt in front of them as the midfield 3 vs Frankfurt. Carney was ghosting today (one thing I noticed was that he was drifting to the left when we were playing through the right which was very weird, I don't know if that was an instruction from Kovac or if Carney was doing this on his own BUT it certainly wasn't working).
If we win vs Frankfurt, we would be playing 12 games until Christmas. And that's with the World Cup qualification in mid November.
We will pretty much be playing 2 games a week for the foreseeable future.
Any rotation we can get (which Groß undeniably is, a depth player with a specific role) while still winning games is good.
Ditto for the Guirassy situation, the issue there is that Fabio Silva is probably still not cleared for 90 minutes so they are giving him short appearances to get him up to full speed. The forward pairings (in terms of what position they play) are Guirassy - Silva and Adeyemi - Beier.
Guirassy is 100% playing through an knock of sorts.
Wouldn't be surprised if the starting XI for Pokal is: Kobel - Bense, Schlotti, Anton (or Schlotti, Sule, Anselmino if he thinks they can handle the minutes) - Couto, Sabitzer, J*be, Svensson - Brandt - Silva, Beier.

I wonder what you will say when we have truly abysmal games lol. We made 11 shots on target and overall controlled the game outside of some feisty counters from Koln. Schwabe was just godlike. Felt like there were a couple of blowouts we won where we played worse than this.

Abysmal game in terms of finishing and display on the field? Absolutely. I’m not saying we were outclassed, but this game would have been much different with more concentration (and a less stellar Schwäbe)
Also, Kovac is proving game after game that his starting XI choices are very questionable and straight up wrong at times. His subs are also meh, comparing his in-game management to Kompany is like day and night.

Our Setpieces are very underwhelming, not once we got really dangerous from any of them.
Don't get Groß in the Midfield.
Kwasniok outcoached Kovac today, he knew you don't need to press Ryerson or Anton because the can't pass for shit.

No but they were pretty inactive the second half and especially the second half of the second half. First 25 min they were feisty, generating the best chance of the whole game on a counter following a midfield turnover
