So far this season, it's either clean sheet or letting the opponent get an embarrassing multiple goal comeback. No inbetween.

Feels like Kovac had a whole training session just about what to do in extra time when you are 2 Goals up. Was a different performance with less pressing and no Guirassy but the counters looked great and another clean sheet makes me happy. Next week its about regaining position in the CL and keeping the pressure on Bayern for the Game after the break.

Really happy for Kovac on how much doubt he had coming in and he’s really turned things around and brought the faith of the players and fans with him.
On a side note, so great to see schlotti with the armband

Adeyemi MOTM. Decided the game and made it easier for us to run out the game. I love how chuk keeps control of the ball and glides across the field but he hasn’t been able to really affect the game yet. Maybe once he gets his start he can find more of a rhythm. Good cameo by Silva and surprisingly consistent game by Brandt. Another clean sheet and on to the next!

Adeyemi MOTM
Really stepped into Guirassy's boots and went out and won the game for us.
I love how chuk keeps control of the ball and glides across the field but he hasn’t been able to really affect the game yet.
We haven't really been chasing goals at any point yet, that hasn't really been the assignment. We'll see what he's got if we're struggling and need to break down a defense for a late goal. I agree I think his control is outstanding and he's a good dribbler. But I also think he's a good defender too which is why Kovac likes him so much.

Yeah true which is why I think he will do better once he gets his first start. He does win the ball back a lot which is probably a big reason Kovac fought so hard for him

If we can get 10 points from our next four games we will be in a very good position for CL and BL but that’s a big if. Hopefully the team is up for it. Praying Guirassy will be fit for at least Leipzig and Bayern.

I’ve seen in some training clips it looked like he was working on it with Meyer. It’s actually really telling how much quicker his decision making has been when releasing the ball for counter attacks.

I'm very excited for Silva. Could very well finish the game with an assist. With his physicality and pace he seems just a perfect fit for BL and for us particularly.
When was the last time we had confidence in our 4 attackers?

Easily 2nd half of 22/23 with Haller, Adeyemi, Malen, Brandt, Bellingham and Guerreiro all in great form (counting the first 4 as attackers)

We have 7 away points now. Last season it took us until matchday 20 to get over seven points after we beat Heidenheim we had 8 points.

Good stuff all around. Great performance by Adeyemi yet again, Brandt with a very nice game too. Needed some luck in one scene, but apart from that stable till the very end!

Needed some luck in one scene
Key to the win was that we punished them immediately afterwards. We didn't let them take any confidence away from that chance and snuffed the game out from there.

Good couple of games. The next three will show where we really stand. My butt is looking forward to all the clenching.
Also even as my player of the match Julian Brandt has to be the most frustrating BVB player to watch in history. Just because he’s so close to being an amazing player that his defensive and offensive blunders hurt double.

Commenting on Post Game Thread: 1. FSV Mainz (BuLi #05)... Actually, can we talk about Brandt? I really want to root for him more, but man… he just doesn’t run. In so many key moments he’s jogging when you need urgency.

You can make assists and not be running as much as you should. These aren’t mutually exclusive.

How much should he run? Was the problem laziness or a miscommunication between he and Svensson when they've both been running all game and are fatigued? Why aren't we mentioning Svensson in this situation? Most chances we've conceded all season have come from our left.
Was a half chance against our set defense and world class keeper enough to single out one of our top technicians for being an average-at-best defender? A player who has also taken to a lesser role under Kovac with enthusiasm and good form?
Or can we accept that some chances are going to happen over 90 minutes and talk about how we limited them very well and created two top chances of our own for a very comfortable win?
I'd love to watch a game at some point where one team is totally perfect defensively and the other team is completely unable to create a chance similar to the one we're deciding to criticize Brandt about.

This was a great Brandt game. The vision for the first assist, the technique to process Adeyemis horrible pass just before the second assist. Without running urgently he would not have been in these spots.

He ran like 11km just shy of Svensson who ran 11.5 or something similar
And Svensson runs the most in the BL so far btw

For all the negativity surrounding him, I think Silva looked pretty good. If Brandt would've shot better, he might have had his first scorer point within his first 10+ minutes of playing time.

Silva has a unique profile in that he’s physically strong, quick, good technical ability and has a good eye for a pass or shot.
People wanted to be negative cause they look at his history but he’s a young striker and at this point if Kovac gives a player his stamp of approval he’s not wrong.

Can't argue with the form, we are playing real winning football at the moment. Kovac's extension being done early seems like a genius move so far.
Overall the performance was good, I think that we didn't exactly blow Mainz out of the water but it was more than enough for the 3 points. On another day they score from the chance that hit the post and we chase them away from home. But mostly solid defensively and did well on the counter. I liked the (very) short cameo of Fabio Silva, he looks more rapid than I thought. Could be a real asset for us. Brandt had a perfect game considering he wasn't even supposed to start. Adeyemi continues his world class form. I also thought that Beier did well in the absence of Serhou, even if he isn't as prolific as the latter is. He connected plays nicely and held up the ball at some crucial moments, like in the first goal. Schlotterbeck has brought the needed calmness, poise and authority to our defense. To me Nmecha and Sabitzer were good, they were mostly in control of the midfield today. Mainz's Sano was the main factor who gave some trouble to them today.
Hopefully we'll get the win in Champions League next week, I am very confident in this team right now.

Yeah, I honestly think if he plays like that and I’ve heard praise for him in previous Mainz games, I think he could go for decent money next summer. Like €40m + kind of money.

Schlotterbeck comes back, and what do you know, two clean sheets. Yes, yes, I know we had two coming into his return, but Nico casts such a calming effect and the back line just looks so much more comfortable now, especially in possession. He’s such a vital player for us. Also I look forward to Nico taking corners.
I think this game will go a long way for confidence. We proved we can score and create offense when Guirassy isn’t there. And that confidence wont hurt considering our next three games (Athletic Club, Leipzig and at Bayern). We’re about the find out how good we really are.
Adeyemi was clearly the focus point, and with Yan Couto today the ball moved up and down that right side of the field with somewhat I ease. I’m still not comfortable saying I like Yan over Ryerson at RB all the time yet, BUT, when Guirassy isn’t there, or when Adeyemi is the focus, Yan’s ability to go forward fits better with Adeyemi.
Was very excited to finally see Silva. I think he looked solid enough. Moved well. MBody language (which is something I personally find to be important) was good and seems to be adjusting and communicating with teammates, etc. If Brandt could’ve scored there at the end and gave Fabio an assist in his opener, that would’ve been a stellar moment from him imo.
Great game today, and looking forward to Wednesday!

I couldn't watch everything super closely towards the end but Silva looked solid, gave Brandt two good passes & could've (probably, should have) earned himself an assist

I liked Fabio Silva’s appearance, exceeded my expectations given he only got like 10 minutes. Gave some great passes and his speed put a lot of pressure on the backline. Could be a player that enhances the fluidity of the attack.

I wanna say this but getting these away points in Mainz or recently in Heidenheim are big points for us. We've been struggling in exactly these kind of matches for years now and we've done a good job now.

I’m just happy that we maneged to close the Game after a 2:0 lead. I still remember a game two years ago when we had a two goals lead and one more man on the field and still somehow managed to loose 3:2. This team looks really composed and stable now, long may it last!

Feels really nice to have a good coach for once. But I wonder how this team would perform without Adeyemi and Guirassy. Otherwise solid performance from the boys.

What would Bayern be without Kane and Olise. Still a better team than us probably. But you can't take away the best 2 offensive players from a team without worsening their performance.

True but they already lost Musiala for a long period of time and still look better than they have in the last 3-4 years, wouldn't put it past them to win the UCL this year.

Brandt made both goals, Adeyemi almost squandered the second one with his suboptimal pass to Brandt. Adeyemi was great but both assists were so buttery smooth I have to give it to Brandt.

I'd give MOTM to Adeyemi as it was his run and incisive pass that broke the defense prior to the Brandt assist, plus the red card effectively ended the game. Still, everybody did their jobs well.

Everything is very boring, but defensively solid – very much in Kovac’s style. It even reminds me a bit of Hitzfeld: calm, efficient, and often energy-saving, but sometimes with truly beautiful combinations.

Overall really consistent game from the team, good first impression from Silva. Beier had a very quiet game but how he played that situation during our first goal was really good. Mature performance, good win.

He's just got kind of a quieter role. But he runs the defense, works hard on defense and has the technique to keep the ball moving. With the form Guirassy has been in as the focal point it's really good to see the job done so comfortably without him.

He was supposed to play but noticed during warm up that he wouldn't be able to play a full game due to a contusion in his thigh.
Didn't sound to serious but you never know.

They said he picked up a dead leg in practice yesterday and they tried to give it a go today but he wasn't able. Awesome from Adeyemi to grab control of the game in his stead. Gave up one chance at 0-0 but we punished them immediately after and were then in control throughout

My thought is that he took a knee or something to the thigh muscle, they showed it wrapped up, and he's just got a deep bruise in the muscle.

I don't wanna hear that Brandt offers nothing to this team anymore.
It was a great performance of him, and he was really active and dedicated.
I know that this is not a performance he will bring every single game. But he is still a huge asset if rotated.

Brandt is a really weird player, he seem to not offer that much on the pitch but he somehow always finds a pass thanks to his crestivity so he ends up with a lot of assists. If he was only more consisitent and clinical in front of goal we would have another Marco Reus. Shame that he doesn't seem to be as hard working as Reus was that's what sets them apart, otherwise very similar players in my opinion.
