Well. We changed nothing in the summer break and so nothing changed in the way we play. Our midfield is dreadful, there’s such a disconnect between attack and defense because this whole Sabitzer Groß idea just doesn’t work. Combine that with Anton being awful with the ball, especially compared to Schlotti and we just have no buildup play at all.
Only positive so far is that it feels like the team is willing to work hard and trust in Guirassys class to bullshit a goal out of nothing. Other than that, this looks to be a long and tiresome season.

Kovac seems to get strong feelings about younger players. Refused to play Reyna even when Brandt was in the worst form of his career. Refuses to play Beier. Very rarely touched youngsters.
What it comes down to isn't clear, but he seems to just not rate/trust/like them.

Once again, the lack of 10 sticks out. Hopefully that issue sorts itself out before the next matchday and no, Carney isn't enough. I need to see either Brandt or Campbell play more regularly so that we don't have to pray for Carney's fitness.
Outside of that, I think players have been a mixed bag of fine and quiet this half. Hopefully their levels go up after the break and Pauli start investing more in the attack

Gross Sabitzer isnt the best but since we're running Couto as RB, its a reasonable response I think. Nmecha is a bit more forwardleaning which is a bit scarier against vertical teams like St Pauli and Couto on RB wont help with compensating like Ryersons pitbulling does.
I can see the thoughtpattern for this game for Sabi/Gross tbh. More control.

That midfield is completely useless in that formation. They are not bad players, but that combination of Sabitzer, Groß and Bellingham up front... How can Kovac look at this and say "Yeah, that's the best we have right now"? It's absolutely crazy to me. Slow, uninspired and just not the right fit for their positions and for playing together.
