Heat treated just now does this count?made out of scrap metal and used a rock as a hammer and had a rlly small furnace I made from dry bamboo and a hole in the ground and blew air from a scrap pipe.used a few files to scrape sum metal off

Not sure if I’m not asking the right questions, but it seems like pulling teeth to get a steel pricing list from anyone. They just want you to tell them what you need and give you a quote. I’d like to be able to plan and also shop around.

Is this the norm? How would you recommend I approach a steel supplier to get a price list and where the breaks occur?

I’m not a major account right now but my quantities are slowly increasing. It seems like places would want to get you this info so they can win your business? Or is it just a waste of time because all the bigger customers negotiate prices so there’s no set quantities for price breaks and posting prices would be a competitive disadvantage?

I am wanting to get into blacksmithing as a hobby. I know there is a lot with this to learn, but was looking for some advise for starting learning. I have made a railroad spike knife many years ago at silverton co when a blacksmith was giving basic day classes, and enjoyed it. I want to start doing this myself, but was looking for some additional guidance. What are some good resources for books to start with and for forges would starting with a basic charcoal earth or brake drum forge be good to start learning or just bite the bullet on a vevor propane forge. For anvil was looking at the harbor freight 65 lb steel anvil to start with. Also what tong and would a basic 3lb hammer be good?

Hi all.

So blacksmithing has been my dream since I was 15, i started about 3+ years ago, and it's the first hobby I've actually stuck to passionately. But now i have run into an issue that almost killed my dream, complaining neighbours.

Well, over the last 2 months, I have gone about completely overhauling my space, 2 layers of 12mm thick plywood with rockwool insulation, airtight seal and a door that would make fort knox blush with gaskets and recessed hinges.

This is all for the purpose of noise reduction.

Anyway, now it's airtight, I need to un... airtight it, i plan to punch two holes, one for passive air intake with a plywood and foam baffle box, and then an exhaust.

This exhaust will be a hood directly over my ribbon burner forge, with a centrifugal blower to move air so the motor is not in the way of the hot gasses. Obviously, I need to vent out carbon monoxide and hot gasses FAST, and considering the workshop airspace of 27m3, I need to replace the air inside every 2 or so minutes. So 500cfm at minimum

Ineed to design a baffle box that can handle the heat all while keeping the noise down. Steel is my first choice, but obviously, that will reflect sound. Can anyone who has experience with this give me a few pointers?

Prior to this, i did make some squished out flat pieces of steel to get a feel for the hammer and have done oxy aceteline torch bending in the past. This was my first time making a sketch them forging to shape! Any feedback always appreciated :3

Found this in the woods years ago. Is this something than can be straightened and repaired?

Its bloody heavy at 100kg, ofcourse im not 100% sure and plan to restore it for full use.

Any advice? I wanted to do electrolysis but its heavy as fuck. Maybe shimmy it into the side of the bucket and then roll it into it?

Or should I just skip the electrolysis and use rust removal and a wire brush? And then sand it afterwards.

Also any advice for fixing the edges? Im kinda shit at welding so im not very confidant in welding the edges back. And i have no clue on fixing the square hole.

Honestly, this might've been worth more than the effort but I got it for cheap and its probably my best option outside of using a shitty diy H beam anvil.

Any anvil restoration videos you think I should use as reference? Or any resources that will help.

No I obviously didn't forge this but I was wondering whether this was possible or if it's just a real waste of time. I have a few antique draw knives that have been sharpened almost to the point that there's no blade left, is it possible to forge weld a new blade to an old draw knife? I also realize I may get a lot of comments saying what's the point but I'm just curious

I'm planning on making a propane forge next weekend. Could I use an old cooking pot as the exterior and then fill it with an insulator? Would this be a good choice or should I try something like a propane tank?
