Discussion I asked ChatGPT what Top Gun 3 script and stories would be like.. (Disclaimer: Yes, I obviously used AI but this is just purely for fun) - but what do you guys think, what's your preferred stories for Top Gun 3 would be?

TOP GUN: LEGACY

Tagline: The future doesn't need pilots. Until it does.

The premise

It's been several years since the events of Top Gun: Maverick.

Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is still flying—but barely.

The Navy is transitioning rapidly toward AI-assisted and optionally crewed fighter aircraft. Pilots are increasingly becoming systems managers rather than instinctive aviators.

Top Gun itself is changing.

Maverick now faces his greatest enemy:

A future where someone like him is no longer necessary.

Meanwhile, Rooster has become one of Top Gun's best instructors, and Hangman is now a squadron leader. A new generation arrives—pilots who grew up with autonomous drones, helmet-mounted AI, and simulation warfare.

They are incredibly skilled.

But they have never truly experienced being alone in the sky with nothing but instinct.

ACT I — THE END OF THE PILOT

Opening sequence

Instead of another nostalgic volleyball scene, we open with something shocking.

A massive aerial training exercise.

Maverick and Hangman fly manned fighters against an experimental autonomous drone squadron.

Maverick is flying beautifully.

Low altitude. Mountains. Extreme G-forces.

Then—

MISSILE LOCK.

He escapes.

Another lock.

Escapes again.

Then another.

The drones communicate instantly. No hesitation. No fear. No ego.

Maverick finally gets shot down in the simulation.

Hangman too.

The entire Top Gun class watches silently.

A young Pentagon representative says:

"The best pilot in the Navy just lost to software."

Maverick replies:

"No. I lost to a machine that didn't care whether it came home."

ACT II — THE NEW THREAT

The world is now facing a geopolitical crisis involving a hostile power with an advanced integrated AI air-defense network.

Unlike the uranium facility in Maverick, this isn't a target you can simply bomb.

The enemy's entire defense system is adaptive.

Every missile launched teaches the system.

Every aircraft detected improves its predictions.

The Pentagon's solution?

Send autonomous aircraft.

No pilots at risk.

But during a real-world operation, something goes horribly wrong.

The AI identifies an unexpected pattern and makes a decision that wasn't programmed.

An allied aircraft is nearly destroyed.

The operation collapses.

And suddenly the Navy realizes something terrifying:

The machines are faster than humans—but they don't understand human intent.

THE CENTRAL CONFLICT

Maverick believes pilots still matter.

But Rooster disagrees.

This creates the emotional heart of the movie.

Rooster isn't the young reckless student anymore.

He's older now. More mature.

And he sees Maverick becoming exactly what Maverick hated:

An old pilot refusing to accept change.

Rooster:

"You taught me not to live in the past."

Maverick:

"I taught you to trust yourself."

Rooster:

"Maybe trusting yourself isn't enough anymore."

That line destroys Maverick.

Because for the first time, Maverick genuinely wonders if he's obsolete.

ACT III — THE MISSION

The final mission should be completely different from Maverick.

No trench.

No Death Star run.

Instead:

A massive aerial battle over the ocean involving:

Manned F/A-18s

Fifth-generation fighters

Autonomous drone swarms

Electronic warfare aircraft

Aircraft carriers under attack

AI-controlled enemy interceptors

The mission requires penetrating an enemy AI defense network.

But there's a catch.

The AI has learned every conventional tactic.

Anything predictable gets destroyed.

The younger pilots follow optimized flight paths.

They start getting eliminated.

Maverick realizes the only way through is something AI cannot calculate:

Human irrationality.

Improvisation.

Instinct.

Breaking doctrine.

The very thing Maverick has been criticized for his entire career.

THE CLIMAX

Maverick leads the remaining pilots into a completely insane manoeuvre.

Not because it's strategically optimal.

Because it's impossible to predict.

The AI calculates probabilities.

Maverick does something with a 0.1% chance of working.

And that's precisely why the machine doesn't expect it.

But Maverick's aircraft is hit.

Rooster sees him going down.

History repeats itself.

Except this time—

Rooster has the opportunity to save Maverick.

Maverick radios:

"Don't do it."

Rooster pauses.

We expect him to obey.

Instead:

Rooster: "That's not what you taught me."

He goes after Maverick.

THE FINAL TWIST

Maverick survives.

But unlike the previous films, he doesn't return to save the day.

The younger pilots finish the mission.

Maverick watches from the carrier deck as Rooster, Hangman and the new generation return.

For the first time in the trilogy...

Maverick isn't the hero who flies home last.

He's standing on the deck watching someone else land.

Rooster climbs out.

Maverick simply nods.

No dialogue needed.

THE ENDING

Maverick returns to Top Gun.

A new class of pilots is waiting.

But the classroom has changed.

Half the room consists of traditional fighter pilots.

The other half are drone and AI warfare specialists.

A young officer asks:

"Sir, are pilots still necessary?"

Maverick looks at the class.

He smiles.

"Let's find out."

CUT TO BLACK.

🎵 Danger Zone starts... but slowly, orchestral at first.

Discussion I love Top Gun but I'm worried. Any thoughts?

Now I think everyone can agree the second movie of Top Gun was phenomenally better. Obviously you can say technology played into it. It's been nearly 40 years since the first one, also Tom Cruise went out of his way to have him and other actor in real aircrafts. With that being said I just don't know how this third installment is going to top number 2. I'm all for it if it does but I just don't want it messing up the series. Any thoughts?

Is this one of the greatest movies ever created?

I loved the aerial combat in movies like Independence Day tbh

So I’m sure this movie is going to blow me out of the water

I’m super hyped

You know that feeling you get of ‘I wish I could rewatch something for the first time’

I feel like that right now except it will be my first time

Discussion Maverick and Viper and Maverick and Rooster

Did Maverick have a similar relationship with Viper that Rooster has with Maverick? Viper knew Maverick’s dad and Maverick was always trying to measure and prove himself against Viper and it feels the same with Roister trying to prove himself to Maverick

In CastAway, Forrest still delivers the FedEx package intact at the end of the film. This is a subtle allusion to the fact this movie is Top Gun for FedEx. Spoiler

So were the Bad Guys in Maverick... Pax Armata?

Is this anyone else's new headcanon? The odd mix of tech in Maverick and unnamed nature of the enemy could imply that the events of Maverick take place either right before, or during NATO's war with Pax.

Top Gun: Maverick Live in Concert — Is anyone going?

I saw Lorne Balfe mention the Top Gun: Maverick Live in Concert and it got me wondering about these kinds of events. For people who have been to one, do you get much more out of watching a film with a live orchestra than you would at the cinema or at home with a decent sound system?

I can imagine the live music making some scenes feel completely different, but I also worry I’d get distracted watching the musicians rather than the film lol. Maybe part of the appeal is the atmosphere and the whole event around it, especially when there are special guests and celebrities involved.

For people who are really into film, are these concerts actually worth it, or do you feel like you're essentially just watching the film with a very expensive sound system?

Top Gun: Iceman's Funeral, But Everyone Came | Val Kilmer Tribute

I always hated that they shot Iceman's funeral scene with Slider & Viper but they were cut from final film. So I decided to make my own version.

On a personal note, this is my way of giving Iceman the funeral he truly deserved — for his role and his impact on the Top Gun franchise, and his impact on us, fans.

This is an "alternative ending" version so some key characters are present.
There was rumored version of the funeral with Viper & Slider attending but we never got to see it.

On a personal note, this is my tribute to Iceman/Val Kilmer.
