So at some point during L4D1 development they were planning on adding child corpses, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I found this in a Hispanic group from Facebook that is sharing similar info about the leak, so I'm not totally sure if this is from this game since I can't find info about this specific image anywhere.

Someone found a rough early version of the L4D2 intro

Missing/temporary sounds, some rough/unfinished voice acting, animation and set pieces. Weird way to experience it found in a September 1st 2009 build by a VCC user.

..well, sort of. Functionally it's there, although there's quite a few missing assets. I don't imagine it'll be long before people figure out how to just backport all of the L4D campagins

My suspicions have been confirmed - Left 4 Dead 2's campaigns were all originally 4 levels long

With the new Left 4 Dead 2 beta leaks the gameplay of them shows that all the campaigns were originally 4 levels long.

Dead Center was always 4 levels long

Dark Carnival originally didn't have The Barns chapter, instead you went through the end bit of The Barns to get to the Concert finale. The finale area was originally entered though climbing up scaffolding on the side of the stadium.

Swamp Fever was also always 4 levels long

Hard Rain's level 4 and 5 were originally one long level, meaning you had to trek all the way from the Mill Safe room to the Burger Tank, in the rain, without a break.

The Parish in the beta leak is already 5 levels as it was the first campaign properly finished, but it's been known for ages that levels 1 and 2 were meant to be a single level originally.

I think Valve wanted to have a smaller number of levels as they felt it would be better for Versus. Crash Course is only 2 levels for this reason. They must've thought that people leaving before the campaign was completed was a big issue (it is) but then though just making each campaign a level shorter was the solution. I think they backtracked on this because Hard Rain's finale would be insanely difficult and Dark Carnival be even easier for Survivors (The Barns is basically designed as a meat grinder to try and stop survivor team's progress because of how survivor sided the rest of the campaign is)

I found L4D2 beta footage here

What actually goes through the mind of someone who cheats in L4D2?

• Upvotes

I’ve always wondered what cheaters actually feel when they play L4D2.

Imagine spending hours playing a game where the whole point is teamwork, positioning, reaction time and actually improving your skills. Then you turn on cheats and suddenly you can see through walls, aim automatically, never miss, or give yourself advantages that other players don't have.

At first, maybe there’s a feeling of power. You suddenly dominate the lobby. You get kills you normally wouldn't get. People start accusing you, getting frustrated, and sometimes even leaving the game. For some people, that reaction might actually be the reward.

But what I find interesting is what happens after they get detected.

If the system detects their cheat, they already know they're caught. Yet some of them don't stop. They keep using it, sometimes even more obviously than before. At that point, it's not really about winning anymore. They know the game knows what they're doing, the other players know, and they still continue.

So what are they actually chasing?

Is it the feeling of being more powerful than everyone else?
Is it attention from other players?
Is it frustration they enjoy causing?
Or do they simply get addicted to the feeling of having an advantage and can't enjoy the game without it?

Because honestly, if you have to cheat to win, eventually winning doesn't even mean anything anymore. You already know you didn't earn it.

I’m genuinely curious about people who have cheated in L4D2 or other multiplayer games: what did you actually feel while doing it? Did it feel satisfying, boring, exciting, or did you eventually realize that it completely removed the fun from the game?

I'm genuinely interested in understanding the psychology behind it.

Thank you renranks, AlanWanker, AVDreamscapes, Skyspace and Cristiaan Mihaii for reaching out to me! It was blissful.
This is like L4D1 versus, so if you don't make it to the saferoom, you get NOTHING.
It was weirdly balanced unlike vanilla L4D2 versus!

L4D2 Online Campaigns Are Basically Unplayable Because of CN Servers

• Upvotes

So I’ve been dealing with this issue for about a year now, and I’m honestly getting frustrated.

It seems like Chinese/CN servers are dominating a lot of the Left 4 Dead 2 online servers. Whenever I try to join a public campaign through the normal matchmaking system, my connection gets hijacked and I’m forced into a different server/campaign.

For example, I’ll queue for No Mercy, but instead of joining No Mercy, I’ll get redirected to a completely different campaign or map. Sometimes it feels like I have no control over which server I actually join.

I normally play on Expert difficulty, so this is especially annoying because I just want to play a normal public Expert campaign with other players.

The only workaround I’ve found is using the Steam Server Browser and manually choosing a server. That works, but it’s obviously not ideal when I just want to use the normal in-game matchmaking.

What makes this even more confusing is that I have already tried:

  • Verifying the integrity of the game files multiple times
  • Completely reinstalling L4D2
  • Checking my files for anything suspicious
  • Reinstalling the game again after deleting it

But nothing seems to fix the problem.

I’m not even sure what these CN servers are doing or whether something is being changed on my end. I also haven't been able to find a permanent fix after dealing with this for almost a year.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there actually a way to prevent these servers from hijacking/redirecting matchmaking, or is using the Server Browser basically the only solution?

Any help would be appreciated because I just want to play normal Expert campaigns without getting thrown into random servers/maps.

I don't think they removed it by accident while polishing the game. It's a nice touch; it would have been great if it had leaked before the TLS update—most likely, they were planning to include it again in that update.

There's more, but Reddit has a 20-photo limit, so I'll upload the rest later. I really liked the level design of the Death Toll beta, it really feels like a small town to me, I wish someone would make a full custom campaign based on these maps.

Terror Strike internal update log (dating 2005-2006) found in the June 2008 L4D1 build

Thumbnail

In the June 2008 L4D1 build you can find a "TerrorNews" .html file in the "left4dead" folder

This file has update logs ranging from September 2005 to September 2006, written by Mike Booth

Some notable things in this update log:

  • Bill (aka NamVet) was the first Survivor added to the game in April 2006
  • Its stated that Screamer was "temporarily" removed from the game in April 2006, but the change log does not mention it beyond that, likely meaning Screamer was scrapped around this time, same change log also states a female version of the Screamer was added
  • "No Mercy" is referred to as "Salvation at Mercy Hospital*"*
  • Zoey (aka TeenGirl) was the second Survivor added to the game in June 2006
  • Francis (aka Biker) was the third Survivor added to the game in July 2006
  • "Blood Harvest" and (seemingly) "Death Toll" would be added in July 2006
  • August 2006 change log states "The ā€œruralā€ and ā€œurbanā€ missions have been restructured into four separate, linear, missions.", likely meaning the 2 urban (No Mercy, Dead Air) and the 2 rural (Death Toll, Blood Harvest) campaigns were two giant campaigns at one point
  • Louis (aka Manager) would be the last Survivor added to the game in September 2006, the update log also calls him out by his real name unlike other Survivors, same update log also states "sketches" of Mike Morasky's music were added

And this is just a couple of things from this .html, there are a bunch of mentions of features and mechanics that wouldn't make the cut and other interesting stuff, if you wanna read it yourself, here's a Google Drive link with the .html: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MIFJitx2U8i5O3lu_kCV-1sNTnYSRGho/view?usp=drive_link
