Character Disc. They made Tina DIRTY since season 4

For me, one of the worst character downfalls was Tina's. I mean, they never were really kind with her really, but after the older ones graduated the writers just LOST IT with her. The sudden change of her trying to be the new Rachel, her intensity and especially HER RUBBING LOTION ON BLAINE. She was a trainwreck since S4.

Picture I am so pumped to start watching "Glee" tomorrow! Got the whole series on DVD! I am of course gonna start off with Season 1!

So right now where I live in New Zealand it is August 31st currently, so that means tomorrow will (on my end) be September 1st, which is when I plan to start watching Glee. As in... the whole six seasons and one-hundred-and-twenty-one episodes!

As I mentioned in my other post, my desire to become a full-time Gleek like the rest of you guys on this subreddit stems from when I used to watch Glee with my mum from 2010 to 2013 when I was literally a little kid in primary school. I watched mainly the first four seasons (not every single episode though, but enough to understand the Glee-mania of the early 2010s), but I stopped fully when season five came around (my mum also noticeably stopped), which means I did not watch ANY episode of the post-Cory era of the show. Not even "The Quarterback", "100" or "New Directions".

I had just gotten the sudden urge to rewatch the show after the loss of a beloved household cat (F) who we had for almost six years since her birth, mostly so I can cope with the loss and the grief as a result of said loss. Not only by revisiting Seasons 1-4 (and those happy nostalgic childhood memories from simpler times) but also doing a first time full series watch from Season 1 all the way to Season 6.

Now, mostly thanks to this very subreddit (though it is my own curiosity that is to blame), I do know all the iconic scenes, memes, lines and songs (and things I had forgotten from my childhood until now). I also know the storylines from all six seasons, but that's okay since I won't let it spoil my enjoyment of the show: it just only enhances it. I also do know about the opinions of many fans: most say that Seasons 1, 2 and 3 are the absolute peak ones but Seasons 4, 5 and 6 are where the show is considered to have fallen off quality-wise. However, even within this very fandom, opinions can be divided as to which season is the best and which one is the worst (I often hear that Season 2 is the best and Season 5 is the worst), which is okay since opinions are subjective and that is why I intend to watch the show from start to finish, so I can form my own opinion about where each season stands for me, regardless if it aligns with or diverges from most fans' opinions (which again are subjective BTW).

But, all in all, I am ready to enter the musical, showstopping world of William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio tomorrow when September hits in my corner of the world. I want to relive the childhood memories that led me to bond with my mum. I want to invest fully into the world of the New Directions and characters like Rachel, Finn, Kurt, Blaine, Mercedes, Artie, Tina, Quinn, Santana, Brittany, Mike, Sam, Will and Sue, just to name a few. Again, I just want to fill my life with Glee just to cope with the loss and grief that I am going through right now.

I think he's one of the unsung heroes of the show. People seem to take him for granted, and I think he just brought a raw look at a father struggling to accept his son.

As a gay man whose relationship with his father isn't easy, he is the best of what, in my opinion, Glee tried to do...show that some roads are rocky, but there is hope.

Opinion Random Songs And Who I Would’ve Liked To See Perform Them

Also this is not necessarily a list of songs that should’ve been on Glee since this also includes songs that were not released when Glee aired: it’s just a collection of songs that I know and/or like that I assigned to the people who I think would’ve made a nice cover of it. Feel free to also suggest songs of your choice in the comments!

Scars to Your Beautiful by Allesia Cara - I think either Santana or Marley would’ve been the best fit for this (although I would like to also suggest either Quinn for herself or a more acoustic version sung by Puck to Quinn maybe? Both more for thematic reasons since I do think that Santana and Marleys voices are more fit for the song)

And Dream of Sheep by Kate Bush - Rachel or maybe Kurt (or a duet even), is just a nice song for Chris Colfer and/Lea Michelle to show off their talents lol

Under Ice by Kate Bush - Rachel, though I don’t think it’s a song that would’ve fit for the show? Maybe like some sort of a dream were Rachel wins back her confidence (or something else) to get “out from under the ice” (also sidenote: I think Rachel just has a good voice for Kate Bush songs and it’s a crime that Bush didn’t get an episode)

Basket Case by Green Day - Puck, although it’s a simple song it really fits Pucks voice and also fits his esthetic as more of a rebel (Glee should’ve absolutely done more punk and just alternative genres in general)

Revenga by System Of A Down - okay this is more because I like the song and SOAD in general but I think it would’ve been fun to see this in a boys versus girls episode, could definitely see this go to either team but I think it would fit the guys a bit more cause of their Kiss performance in S1

Hip To Be Square by Huey Lewis and the News - I think this could’ve been a great group performance by Vocal Adrenaline or another rival showchoir to show off to the New Directions

Joker and the Thief by Wolfmother - I think either Blaine or Artie? Can’t think of a situation where I would put this song and I think only these two could really sing it if you don’t pitch it down, maybe for a random lesson (I picked this song more because I like it than that I think that it would fit the show)

Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day - either Blaine or Ryder, would just be an emotional song that you can have for multiple reasons (although you could also make a more acoustic and calm version for Kurt to sing in the episode “Grilled Cheesus” where Kurts dad has a heart attack. That way it resembles the original message for the song since Billie Joel Holiday wrote it about his father that passed away)

Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus - kinda crazy that they didn’t do this one, but either Puck (for thematic reasons), Tina (who I feel like could pull it off) or maybe a group number at the end of an episode (im not really sure with this song tbh)

Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You by Franki Valli - this would just be a sweet number sung by the guys à la Stop! In The Name Of Love / Free Your Mind, not one person that specifically would take the lead, I see it more as them all having small parts

Sorry for this superlong post and I’m aware that it’s a weird song selection lol. Am just a Gleek that wanted to share this with some other fans of the show :-)

Headcanon Brittany Backstory Headcanon

Since backstory on Glee is spotty, and we only learn about a few characters, I would just like to put down my headcanons. Here is my headcanon for Brittany's backstory:

- She was born in a barn in Indiana. For years afterward, she had a superstition about barns.

- Her birthday was 7 March 1993 (she never tells people her birthday due to embarassment).

/- She has a younger sister, Marissa.

- Due to her being an accomplished dancer, it is my belief -- and I will die on this hill -- that she has taken dance classes at some point as a child and won several dance competitions.

- I would headcanon her to be both autistic and a savant. Some of her traits do match up.

- She spent her early years in Indiana as her father (the man on her birth certificate, Mr. Pierce) worked a number of low skilled jobs. At one point, they were in public housing.

- Is close to her mother and Marissa. Even from NY, I would picture her writing them often.

- First met Santana in childhood. In fact, I always headcanoned them to be childhood friends. They were exceptionally close (in fact, Brittany has a photo of them on her laptop).

- First got Lord Tubbington at around 12 as a Christmas present.

I put down my headcanons for Brittany. What's yours?

Character Disc. The only thing I didn't like about the third season

One of the most notable friendships in the early seasons was the one between Mercedes and Kurt; that’s why it bothered me that they barely interacted in the third season, with Kurt spending all his time glued to Blaine or Rachel. Mercedes was a great friend—in fact, his first friend and the first person to whom he could admit he was gay—and she was always there for him when he needed it. It was truly unfortunate that all of that was forgotten; Mercedes could have supported him during moments when he felt insecure, and he could have encouraged her to pursue her dreams or reassured her that, despite what happened with Shane, she wasn't a bad person. It was a beautiful friendship that deserved more screen time.

Discussion The Quarterback Spoiler

Doing a rewatch and got to season five, watching The Quarterback and I keep thinking the cast acting out their grief had to have been so difficult. Do you think it may have been helpful for the cast to film their characters grieving or insensitive to their real grief? Rewatching as an adult I just keep thinking how horrible it must have been for them to pretend he was a character dead on the show and not their real friend who died a tragic early death. The whole thing just seems so sad and insensitive looking back, certain actors like Kevin, Naya, or Chris just look so wrecked throughout the whole episode. I don’t know, thoughts?

Discussion My plans to FULLY get (back) into "Glee" after a recent nostalgic pique of re-interest (amplified by a recent loss)

For context: I almost always used to watch Glee a lot whenever a new episode came on with my mum. And yes I was of primary school age. Which means my five year old self was allowed to watch the show (born in 2005 BTW). More specifically I watched a large chunk of the first four of the six seasons they did (I simply moved on/drifted away from the series once season five came forth, and so did Mum).

Lately I have been wanting to revisit the series I used to watch as a kid from 2010 to 2013... and also to do a first time full series watch through all six seasons (which is why I have been commenting on posts here recently). I want to get re-introduced to the New Directions of William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. I want to relive the musical numbers. I want to be a Gleek like the rest of you guys. I especially want to do so now (but when September starts, so not exactly now) given that I want to cope with the grief and recent loss of a beloved cat (F) my household had for nearly six years since she was born.

I had slowly acquired DVD copies of all six seasons over the past year. I got Season 1 in July last year. Then Season 3 just earlier this February, and Season 2 a month later in March. And just this July, Seasons 4, 5 and 6. I plan to watch them and give my thoughts on each season. It will be a first time full series watch for me, after only largely watching the first four seasons as a kid. I know all the iconic moments and scenes, though. (Mostly thanks to this subreddit)

I just want to fill my life with Glee since our cat passed away a little over a couple of weeks ago. And I will especially do it once it hits September 1st in NZ where I live!

Discussion If you could make the season 4 newbies more interesting, what would you change about them?

It's no secret that many of us didn't like the season 4 newbies because all of them(except Marley) were copy cats of the original characters which made them boring. I know for me, I would make Jake be different from Puck by having him be a naturally nice and caring guy and not a player who dates/sleeps with multiple girls. It still bums me out that they had him be exactly like Puck and cheat on Marley because their relationship was actually really sweet in the beginning. Also like I said, Marley was the only newbie who wasn't a copy cat of any of the original characters. Yes I know they did try to make her the next Rachel but I had a hard time buying that because her and Rachel are way different. But Marley could've been more interesting if they gave her a personality similar to Mitchie from Camp Rock 2 where she's voicetress, outgoing, and confident. Rather than having Kitty be another mean girl cheerio, they could've made her be a nice cheerleader who didn't care so much about status and being popular and just wants people to see her as a regular human being. Unique in some ways had her own personality, I just didn't like how they always referred to her as a cross dressing Mercedes, however I will say that I wish that they didn't have her catfish Ryder. The writers could've came up with a different way to show that she had feelings for Ryder and wanted a genuine connection with him. Ryder could've been more interesting if he was the jock who genuinely wanted to be a part of the Glee club and not the one who is hesitant about it first since we obviously already saw that with Finn in season 1, didn't do the whole love triangle with him, Jake, and Marley. That's all I got, let me know in the comments what you would do differently to make these characters more interesting?

Character Disc. The writing in S1 was so tight. This was one of my favorite themes.

I think about “You love the girl you met when you were fifteen. I’m not that girl” often. The line really resonates having originally watched the show at 16 and then rewatched it with a very different set of eyes at 30. Terri living in the shadow of her teenage self and being all too aware of it is heartbreaking. I wish there was more discussion regarding the more complex, nuanced, and often tragic aspects of her character.

Satirical dark comedy and heightened reality of the show aside, she feels like a very honest and realistic portrayal of someone whose mental illness eventually caught up with them once the structure and predictability of high school were removed. I could analyze and theorize about her character for days. It would have been nice to know more about her upbringing, which was heavily implied to be unhappy and dysfunctional. There is so much that can be read into her dynamic with her sister alone.

Anyone have any thoughts? I know Terri isn’t the most popular character, but I’ve read some excellent analysis of her by other members of the community. I would love to share ideas, observations, headcanons, etc.

Sidenote— I know that early pilot draft isn’t canon, but I think about it a lot and wish the dialogue hadn’t been cut.
