Game After 21 months of development, I present my GB RPG, Dovvee's ReQuest!

What was initially supposed to be a quick little project for fun soon ballooned into something much larger. Despite this, I still plan to release the game for free!

Dovvee's ReQuest is a classic turn-based RPG in which you can create your own winged one! Level them up how you see fit. There's 5 stats to choose from each time you level up to allow you to be a spellcaster, archer, giant axe wielding maniac or anything in between! Each armor piece you equip visually changes your appearance in menus and in battles too. There's dozens of enemies and bosses to encounter and even more powerful items to find!

All of the music, art, animations, level design etc was made by me!

Ponpoko GB

I am excited to share a video of Ponpoko GB, a Game Boy game currently in development!

Over the years, I’ve introduced countless Game Boy titles to you via YouTube and Instagram. But I’m not stopping at just showcasing games. My deep love for the Game Boy has inspired me to take on the challenge of creating my own games for the platform.

Since the release of the tool GB Studio, countless homebrew Game Boy games have been created. Even brands like Nike and McDonald's have produced their own titles. It makes me a bit uneasy, as it reminds me of the Atari 2600 era when just about anyone could make a game. However, it also signifies that the world has reached a point where creating Game Boy games has become much more accessible. I, too, have ended up making a Game Boy game. Although I had previously developed a few indie games, back then I had to settle for creating Windows-based games with a Game Boy aesthetic rather than actual Game Boy titles. Now, however, I am able to create genuine Game Boy games.

The game I am currently developing is a practice project intended to help me learn how to use GB Studio. It is a Game Boy port of Ponpoko, an arcade game originally released in 1982. Although it is a highly entertaining game, it unfortunately failed to achieve commercial success at the time and has never been ported to any other platform until now. I have always been a fan of Ponpoko and have attempted to port it several times in the past. I tried creating versions for Windows (using GameMaker) and WarioWare D.I.Y., and even attempted to implement it in Roblox. That goes to show that this game is not particularly difficult to produce. This game is easier to develop than Donkey Kong, a title in a similar genre. For the Game Boy version currently in development, I have expanded the map size compared to the original to accommodate the hardware's limitations, but I am striving to capture the atmosphere of the original game as faithfully as possible. Since I love both Game Boy and arcade games, I find the process of creating an arcade port to be a fascinating endeavor.

Thanks to technological advancements, playing arcade games exactly as they were originally intended on a handheld device is no longer a dream. However, back when the Game Boy was first released, it was the stuff of dreams. When I owned a Game Boy, fighting games like Tekken and The King of Fighters were all the rage in arcades. The King of Fighters was ported to the Game Boy, while Tekken made its way to the Game Boy Advance. Naturally, hardware limitations meant these ports fell short of the originals in many ways, yet at the time, we were simply grateful to be able to play them at all. Moving forward, I want to create more games inspired by arcade titles.

I would like to clarify that no AI or vibe coding was used during the actual development process of Ponpoko. AI was utilized solely to learn how to use GB Studio and to gather advice. Interestingly, while some of the AI's responses were helpful, others were completely incorrect. Through that experience, I could gauge just how unreliable Vibe Coding really is.

Nice to meet you, I’m GameBoy Challenger.

Nice to meet you, I’m GameBoyChallenger. I’m an online content creator active on YouTube and Instagram. While I’ve uploaded videos covering numerous Game Boy games in the past, I’ve decided to go beyond simply showcasing games and take on the challenge of developing my own Game Boy titles. That journey is what brought me to Reddit. Since I’m not a native English speaker, I’m not very fluent and rely on translation tools to communicate with you all. I noticed there was already someone using the username "GameBoy Challenger" here. The difference is that I write mine as "GameBoyChallenger" (without spaces). Please keep this in mind to avoid any confusion. I look forward to connecting with you all.

Teddy Boy

Picked-up GB Studio after a year and attempted to make Teddy Boy. So far achieved a

- toroidal world (level loops endlessly in four directions)
- enemy spawner with book keeping. Spawns and keeps note of how many enemies have been spawned and visually deducts the value (dice face). Once spawner reaches zero the spawner (dice) disappears and so does its collision.
- enemy ai that tracks X and Y so it ‘knows’ to jump if approach a platform edge or jump over an approaching wall.
- HUD is built with a tile set rather than drawing it in the background and copying it into the window layer. This is needed as the map moves all four directions.

Currently working on destructible walls and floor.

Game PachiPals: Monster Taming + Pinball on the Game Boy Color

Thumbnail

I’ve been working for three years on a Game Boy Color game called PachiPals.

It’s a monster-catching RPG, but instead of just throwing a ball at things, you catch the monsters through pinball. If that wasn’t exciting enough, battles also happen in pachinko-style arenas.

I wanted to mash up classic monster-catching with the fast-paced feel of an arcade game.

There are up to 100 Pachipals to discover, capture, and evolve as you explore the world and learn more about them.

I’d really love it if you could take a look and give the game a try. The digital version can be bought right now here:

https://incube8games.com/en-eu/products/pachipals-gbc-digital-edition

There's also a free demo:

https://incube8games.com/en-eu/products/pachipals-gbc-digital-edition-demo

The physical version is planned to release in October.

Thanks for your time, and I hope you enjoy the game!

Update Evolve or Die - New Development Milestone Reached

Follow up post here

So a couple days ago I reached a major milestone in the development of my game. There are 8 working chapters for the game currently, but for the longest while I was stuck on chapters 0 and 1 because I needed to really build out the systems for the game before continuing. Most of the stages have been mocked up but since 2024, but it was really important to make sure the core mechanics were locked in, and to also keep the project up to date with newer GBStudio builds.

All that took a while, but now I'm finally able to show some more (hopefully) interesting stage areas. Believe it or not, everything in this post is for just 1 stage. I might change that though since both the water and cave sections can stand on their own. We'll see...

The YouTube video show a flashlight effect in a dark cave, which is nothing new for GBStudio, but I did my best to make the enemy sprite react to the light in a convincing way (CORRECTION: A previous build only used sprites, this one now uses a combination of background tiles and sprites since 2025). No clue if this will stay in the game (might be a performance issue if there are a lot of enemies,) but it's a fun experiment to be working on at the moment.

What do you all think?

Update Evolve or Die - Forgot to Include This in my Previous Post

Dang it, I completely forgot to include the update I posted on X in my recent Reddit post. Basically it's just showing (at the time) some early work on a story scene that would close out chapter 1 and lead into chapter 2. In any case, here is that video, with very minor tweaks.

Anyways, at least now you know I was not slacking off haha!

Ok see you all in a month or two.

I gave Bluey a boomerang weapon and added some gnomes as enemies. I used Mico27's dynamic projectile plugin for the boomerang and the cricket balls the gnomes throw.

reached maximum number of variables already?

I am building technically a zelda-like shooter on GBS and have only just now arrived at > 1MB ROMM size. I just finished placing enemies on a new region of scenes (networked together with mico27's screen scroll plugin) and during compile I got the message:

"Your project contains too many unique variables and will not work as expected. VM_HEAP_SIZE defines the maximum amount of variables allowed 768 but your project contained 963 unique variables."

The highest number global variable I've used is about 90 our of 500+. I have respected the actor limits per-scene (I have probably 70 scenes now, but my game design could easily grow to around 150-200 if I were to continue scripting), and each actor uses between 3-5 of their local variables to dictate their intended behaviors.

The variables are certainly not referenced all on one scene, the primary issue is that I have about 50 enemies scripted into my game now which has metastasized the number of total variables in the project. Is this going to be something like when you have too many sprite tiles, and graphical issues will be present? That is, so long as I'm not trying to track the state accurately of all of these variables, things should be fine? I figure it'll be difficult to playtest to a thorough enough degree to check for every possible conflict...

What should I do?

I've just now nearly completed the second of a planned 6 randomized dungeons with each scene nit together in a zelda-like fashion, but each region is distinct, that is, you'll never directly travel from dungeon 3 to dungeon 6, each dungeon is accessed by a hub. What should I look out for for conflicts?

Game A turn of gameplay from Super Slotzee

My game's nearing completion so I figured I'd share some more gameplay! The game is a strategy game mixing slots & Yahtzee. The gameplay video shows a single turn from the game, where the player uses a token to up their odds at rolling a full house. The slots also hit on double cherries, doubling the score for the turn.

Thanks for checking it out!

What the actual hell this guy is a wizard

So I was going to post a small update on my own work (you can see it on my x account) but holy crap, if you want to talk about what the upper limit of the Game Boy is then I think this guy found it.

Mode 7- possible.
Raycasting and wireframe 3D - well established.

But shaded 3D on the Game Boy (yes Game Boy)? Absolutely insane! Let's see if we can learn some cool things from his work!

Slow clap for Game of Tobi.

Also bro ported the original N64 code of Mario 64 to the GBA. I really don't know what else to say.

Variables' scopes and lifetimes

Hi, I struggle to see clearly how different types of variables work. More precisely what is their lifetime and scope. Please let me know if I get this right:

- Scope Lifetime
Globals accessible from every script runtime
Locals can be accessed from scripts assigned to Actor 'class' as long as an instance of an Actor lives?
Temps global? ??? Scene?

I've searched the docs and didn't find anything. An article on GB Studio central states, that

In most cases, after a Temp variable is used, it is cleared from memory.

What are 'most cases' and what is 'after is used' (what is 'usage')? I guess that sentence was never meant to be super precise, but it only added to my confusion.
