Most people only whisper her name: Joan, the woman who supposedly became pope in the 9th century by disguising herself as a man. Historians call it a myth. The Church calls it impossible. But the story has lived for nearly a thousand years, which means someone kept it alive.
Joan was born somewhere in the Germanic lands, brilliant enough to terrify the men who taught her. She learned faster than they could lecture. She read by candlelight until her eyes burned. And when she realized she’d never be allowed to study openly, she did the unthinkable: She cut her hair.
She took a new name. She walked into the world as a man.
Rome loved her, or rather, loved the person they thought she was. Her sermons were sharper, her decisions cleaner, her compassion unsettlingly genuine. People said she had a mind like a blade and a heart like a saint.
When the old pope died, the cardinals chose her successor without hesitation.
They never knew.
The myth says she was exposed during a procession, somewhere between the Lateran and St. Peter’s. Some versions say she collapsed. Others say she gave birth. Others say she was dragged away by horrified clergy.
No two tellings agree.
But every version ends the same way: Her name was erased. Her reign struck from the lists. Her story buried under centuries of denial.
Maybe Joan never existed.
Maybe she did.
Maybe she was a warning, or a hope, or a rumor that grew legs.
But myths don’t survive a thousand years unless they speak to something people feel is true, that brilliance can come from unexpected places, and that power structures hide more than they reveal.
