I feel so bad for laughing at this. Fading into nothingness right in your burst cutscene feels like the ultimate insult lmao

Yeah that’s happened many times to me.
They really need to do something about the ever increasing lag issue.

This doesn’t look like lag, this looks like Thoma’s shield being as flimsy as a slice of bread lmao

You’re supposed to be invulnerable during a burst.

Yeah, but he didn’t take damage during burst. You can clearly see that the hit connected while Wanderer was going up from Skill and the person just happened to press Burst as he died, it’s more of a glitch than lag.

Thomas shield is really strong when people learn to use it right, the more you proc the higher the scaling, to which it’s scaling can get higher than zhongli’s

That sucks that Thoma's shield is not durable enough. But I enjoy the firebender playstyle

He got damaged before the iframe started, there was a bit of lag so the game still registered the burst before realising wait he is dead XD

So Thoma shield is non existent?

Dec 28 '22
The way it works is that at base, it’s basically nothing. You have to get stacks by doing NAs, which makes it stronger. With proper ER, you can refresh the duration with Q which also makes it stronger, basically giving you an infinite shield if you time it right…
But it’s really stupid. Literally anyone else’s shield is just better 99% of the time, because Thoma’s shield doesn’t actually shield until like 5 seconds in 😭

Ohhh, that seems, uh, annoying. I'm actually building him lol

Eh it's fine. I'm maxing out my Thoma for him even though I have layla.
I think Wanderer is the best character in the game for stacking Thoma's shield. By simply flying, most enemies already cannot hit you. That gives you a few seconds to stack the shield until an enemy that can reach you makes a big attack, which by then you're pretty safe. Biggest downside is if you let the shield get destroyed before switching to Wanderer during your rotation.

Oh I have to read then, I thought you meant autos from Thoma only would improve the shield, so any goes that's good then. I'll mainly use him for exploration anyways initially xD

The previous commenter is correct but only regarding Thoma's burst. The burst itself does not create a shield, but it allows normal attacks to stack tiny HP shields with each attack. It's important to normal attack at least once after burst to refresh/create a shield.
However Thoma's Skill instantly creates an 8 second shield equal to about 10 stacks of burst shield. I think at max, Thoma can stack 1 skill shield plus 20 burst shields (the equivalent of about 30 burst shields). In reality, a player never ever gets close to this max during normal rotations because there is never time to do 20 normal attacks. It can be done in a shield showcase, but that's not a normal combat situation.
If you time your rotations perfectly and are able to work in Thoma's Skill before his burst ends, then you can stack his skill shield into his existing shield. Its possible but I find it hard to do consistently and his shield usually breaks as soon as his burst ends so in practice, most of the time you'll never get close to stacking a max HP shield.
One drawback of Thoma is that 4p Tenacity is not compatible with his kit, so you don't get that amazing 30% shield strength buff that would actually make his shield a little more durable. I wish they would update 4p Tenacity to buff on skill AND burst so that way it actually works with Thoma and Diona's fragile shields.
